The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Chehalem Mountains, Oregon, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed Al-Eisa Jan 1980

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Chehalem Mountains, Oregon, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed Al-Eisa

Dissertations and Theses

The Chehalem Mountains area, encompassing 70 square kilometers, is at the western extent of the Columbia River Basalt Group as mapped in western Oregon. The flows in the study area were identified as belonging to subdivisions of the Columbia River Basalt Group on the basis of physical characteristics and trace element geochemistry. The basalt flows are poorly exposed in the area and weathering is deep and extensive where the flows have been exposed. Where erosion has exposed the underlying marine sedimentary rocks, the basalt has failed in landslides.

An Observational Study Of Service Provider Client Dyadic Interactions, Joan Dayger Behn Jan 1980

An Observational Study Of Service Provider Client Dyadic Interactions, Joan Dayger Behn

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation reports on the evolution of an observation instrument designed to examine a series of dyadic interactions between service providers and elderly clients. The encounters took place in the physical context of the client's home and under the auspices of two different kinds of urban service agencies. Staff members and elderly clients of In-home Nursing and Interaction agencies participated in the study. The coding system (Service Provider/Client Dyadic Interaction Coding System or SP/CDICS), is comprised of 28 carefully defined and described behavioral categories. The categories were developed through literature reviews and a series of preliminary observations conducted in agencies …

An Impact Evaluation Of Home Improvement Loans On Neighborhood Decline: The Case Of Portland, Oregon, Geri Larkin Jan 1980

An Impact Evaluation Of Home Improvement Loans On Neighborhood Decline: The Case Of Portland, Oregon, Geri Larkin

Dissertations and Theses

Recently federal policy aimed at halting decline in urban neighborhoods has included a major focus on housing rehabilitation efforts. In the case of Portland, Oregon, federally funded improvement loans for owner-occupied housing units resulted in the rehabilitation of almost four thousand homes from 1975 until 1978, over twice the number of homes rehabilitated in any other city in the nation. The purpose of the present study was to examine and analyze the city's rehabilitation loan program in two ways. First, the loan process itself was examined to ascertain whether there were any deficiencies in the loan program which should be …

A Survey Of Carryover Practices Of Public School Clinicians In Oregon, Joan Marie Cranmer Polson Jan 1980

A Survey Of Carryover Practices Of Public School Clinicians In Oregon, Joan Marie Cranmer Polson

Dissertations and Theses

Clinicians report that carryover management is one of the most difficult and time consuming problems they face (Johnson, 1972) yet the literature offers little data to assist clinicians in determining what methodologies should be used and which are effective in facilitating carryover. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the type of methodologies utilized by public school clinicians in Oregon to facilitate carryover with clients originally diagnosed as having articulation disorders. A secondary question dealt with the perceived effectiveness of these methodologies.

Toward A Test For Ethnocentrism And Ethnorelativism Based Upon Reference Group Orientation, James C. Mayer Jan 1980

Toward A Test For Ethnocentrism And Ethnorelativism Based Upon Reference Group Orientation, James C. Mayer

Dissertations and Theses

The object of this investigation is to determine whether two aspects of reference group orientation, 1) multiplicity and 2) structural variation, are possible indicators of ethnocentrism. Most of the thesis is devoted to a theoretical formulation in which reference group orientation and ethnocentrism are placed in a peroeptual framework. Reference group orientation is defined as a person's use of a frame of reference that is formed through adoption of a reference group's perspective. Ethnocentrism is defined as a person's use of a frame of reference that keeps him from accepting the viability of other cultural frames of reference. The acceptance …

The Effect Of Costs And Constraints On The Optimum Employment Combination Of Full-Time And Part-Time Faculty At Urban Community Colleges, Zoe Annette Arrington Jan 1980

The Effect Of Costs And Constraints On The Optimum Employment Combination Of Full-Time And Part-Time Faculty At Urban Community Colleges, Zoe Annette Arrington

Dissertations and Theses

The labor market for part-time faculty at community colleges has changed such that in the past decade the number of instructors who teach part-time now outnumber those who teach full-time. This dissertation examines the full-time and part-time labor markets arguing that two separate labor markets exist. The supply in an urban area is nearly perfectly elastic for both full-time and part-time faculty; the demand side of the labor market is characterized by a number of costs. Data on costs were collected by two separate questionnaires, one to faculty and one to the personnel office of each college. The costs differ …

The Production Of Culture On The Oregon Federal Arts Project Of The Works Progress Administration, Carolyn Howe Jan 1980

The Production Of Culture On The Oregon Federal Arts Project Of The Works Progress Administration, Carolyn Howe

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis addresses the relationship between art and society by examining the production of culture on the Oregon Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The author examines the social conditions and decision-making processes which shaped the art that was produced and determined who produced and who consumed the art of the FAP. Also examined are the changing social relations of art prior tCI), during, and after the WPA's Federal Art Project. The research for the thesis utilized inductive methods of research aimed at theory construction rather than theory testing, although theoretical questions guided the gathering and …

Stability And Resilience In Business Systems, Donald Bard Wilcox Jan 1980

Stability And Resilience In Business Systems, Donald Bard Wilcox

Dissertations and Theses

The purposes of this research report are (1) to introduce into financial management theory, the concepts of stability, resilience and steady state from general systems theory, (2) to formulate hypotheses about the relationships among rate of return, business risk, stability and resilience as exhibited by business systems, (3) to construct quantifiable surrogates for these concepts in terms of the financial operating characteristics of business systems and (4) to test the hypotheses with an appropriate statistical methodology. Business systems are investigated from two different perspectives or levels of aggregation. The first level treats each individual firm as the business system. The …

Studies Of Homogeneous Nucleation And Transient Heat Transfer In Cryogenic Liquids, Dipen N. Sinha Jan 1980

Studies Of Homogeneous Nucleation And Transient Heat Transfer In Cryogenic Liquids, Dipen N. Sinha

Dissertations and Theses

We report the results of a series of experimental studies in two interrelated areas: homogeneous nucleation and transient heat transfer in cryogenic liquids. We report the first determination of the homogeneous nucleation temperature of liquid helium I and liquid nitrogen employing a transient superheating technique. This technique in liquid helium involved the development of a new transient magnetoresistive thermometer which relies on the strong temperaure dependence of magnetoresistance in bismuth as a thermometric property. Our measurements of the homogeneous nucleation temperature for both liquid helium I and nitrogen are in good agreement with the predictions from the Becker-Doring Volmer-Zel'dovich-Frenkel nucleation …

A brief examination of the AMTB as used with LD children was also performed but not included in the statistical analysis.

The Status In 1980 Of The Toulmin Model Of Argument In The Area Of Speech Communication, Jeffrey Robert Sweeney Jan 1980

The Status In 1980 Of The Toulmin Model Of Argument In The Area Of Speech Communication, Jeffrey Robert Sweeney

Dissertations and Theses

In 1958 Stephen E. Toulmin wrote of inadequacies of formal logic and proposed a new field-dependent approach to the analysis of arguments. Despite a generally negative response to his proposal from formal logicians, Toulmin's model for the laying out of arguments for analysis was subsequently appropriated by several speech communication textbook writers. In some textbooks, the Toulmin model has become successor to the syllogism as the paradigm of logical argument. Yet, perhaps due to their seemingly uncritical acceptance of Toulmin's approach there appears to be serious disagreement and confusion among speech communication professionals about the nature and applications of the …

Multiple Impact Therapy: Evaluation And Design For Future Study, Jacqueline H. Abikoff Jan 1980

Multiple Impact Therapy: Evaluation And Design For Future Study, Jacqueline H. Abikoff

Dissertations and Theses

The theoretical underpinnings of Washington County Children's Services Division (CSD) Immediate Conflict-Resolution Family Treatment Program include the systems theory of family therapy with a focus on communication and roles. One of the many approaches to helping families in crisis, it incorporates theories regarding assessment of and intervention in families in crisis. Finally, while it draws upon several different approaches to family therapy, the Washington County program is most closely related to Multiple Impact Therapy (MIT). Thus, a review of relevant literature must address portions of the above enumerated theories that illuminate the thinking behind the Immediate Conflict-Resolution Family Treatment Program. …

Patterns Of Information System Growth In Community Mental Health Centers, Linda J. Bellerby Jan 1980

Patterns Of Information System Growth In Community Mental Health Centers, Linda J. Bellerby

Dissertations and Theses

This research was undertaken to determine whether the growth of computer-supported information systems in community mental health centers can be characterized by distinct stages of development. Data collection and analysis were designed to answer the following two questions: (1) Can distinct stages of information system growth be characterized by common profiles of computer-supported applications? (2) Are there characteristic groups of enabling factors (i.e., organization of data processing activities, management planning and control techniques, and user involvement) consistent among community mental health centers at any given stage of growth? This study draws upon earlier work by Nolan who identified distinct stages …

Central Auditory Processing In Children With A History Of Chronic Middle Ear Problems, Beverly S. Schnabel

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the central auditory processing of children who had sustained chronic middle ear problems during their early language-learning years. A 60% compressed recording of the NU-6 speech discrimination word lists was administered to twenty eight and nine year old normal hearing public school children, reported by their parents to have had repeated middle ear problems during their early years, and to twenty control subjects matched for age from the same public school classes. Differences in compressed and uncompressed word discrimination scores between the experimental and control groups were not found to be statistically …
