The Grammatic Closure Subtest Of The Itpa As A Screening Device, Cathy Newquist
The Grammatic Closure Subtest Of The Itpa As A Screening Device, Cathy Newquist
Dissertations and Theses
Identification and selection of a speech-language caseload in the school setting can be a challenging task. The initial stages of caseload selection are usually in the form of a screening procedure. Although speech-language information is gathered at that time, information about its relationship to each student's academic status is usually not obtained. Such information would be useful in a setting that requires the provision of special education services to be justified from a basis of academic need.
The Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities' (ITPA) Grammatic Closure subtest has been correlated to academic and intellectual measures through various studies. …

The Effects Of Two Management Techniques On The Generalization Of A Syntax Structure, Karin Jeanne Goodling
The Effects Of Two Management Techniques On The Generalization Of A Syntax Structure, Karin Jeanne Goodling
Dissertations and Theses
The effectiveness of any language training program is determined by generalization of the clinically trained behaviors to spontaneous speech. Traditional language programs which employ operant procedures to establish the behavior in the clinic and reinforcement from family, teachers and peers in a variety of settings to obtain generalization, have been successful in establishing the use of grammatical rules in the clinic setting, but reportedly have failed to promote generalization. Recent literature in the areas of semantics and pragmatics has produced a trend toward teaching language in natural contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate: 1) whether a group …

Manipulation Or Education?: Symbolic Language, Belief System And The Truman Doctrine, John Gunn Tilson
Manipulation Or Education?: Symbolic Language, Belief System And The Truman Doctrine, John Gunn Tilson
Dissertations and Theses
The question arises in the analysis of foreign policy decision making regarding how consensus or approval by the public is attained for policies. Some authors have suggested that consensus is obtained through the manipulation of opinion by decision makers. One case often cited as an example of manipulation is the 1947 announcement of the Truman Doctrine.
In determining the validity of these arguments a review was conducted of the language of the doctrine and the interpretations of newspaper columnists. In addition, a review of personal documents of the decision makers was conducted to determine their impressions.
The data compiled from …

Humor Creation And Appreciation As An Indicator Of Intercultural Communication Effectiveness: Toward A Theoretical Model, Richard D. Tavano
Humor Creation And Appreciation As An Indicator Of Intercultural Communication Effectiveness: Toward A Theoretical Model, Richard D. Tavano
Dissertations and Theses
A review of the theoretical and empirical literature from the field of humor and from that of intercultural communication showed that no investigations dealt with the possibility that a sense of humor might serve as an indicator of intercultural communication effectiveness. This study was conducted in order to assess that possibility.
This paper has set out to answer the following questions: What cognitive processes are common to a sense of humor and to intercultural communication effectiveness? What does one's ability to create and appreciate humor say about that individual's potential for intercultural communication effectiveness? Through the review of the literature, …

Analysis Of Problemsolving Groups With Feedback Intervention Using A Systematic Multiple Level Observation Of Groups, Donna Buchanan Schantz
Analysis Of Problemsolving Groups With Feedback Intervention Using A Systematic Multiple Level Observation Of Groups, Donna Buchanan Schantz
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a feedback cycle on problemsolving groups. A formal method, Systematic Multiple Level Observation of Groups (SYMLOG), was employed for the analysis of behavior in such groups. The system, which codes on multiple levels of communication, served both as a theoretical and an explanatory approach. Problemsolving groups which included a feedback session on group process were compared with problemsolving groups which were not given feedback. The study used primary data from SYMLOG field diagrams to determine whether group movement, leader movement, self-perceptions, and group satisfaction would be affected by feedback …

Networks For Staff Development In The State Of Oregon, Vida Sumner Taylor
Dissertations and Theses
This study documents and describes efforts by Oregon school districts to network in order to improve schools and provide resources for staff development. There are at least 41 networks linking school districts, institutions of higher education, and Educational Service Districts in both rural and urban areas of the state. These networks, collaboratives, and consortia have the common purpose of improving education, and the belief that they can accomplish more cooperatively than they can individually. These networks are described in terms of purposes, benefits and problems, and desire for assistance. Comparisons showed that large school districts are much more likely to …
Enhanced Computer Graphics For Decision Makers, Floyd James Brock Jr.
Enhanced Computer Graphics For Decision Makers, Floyd James Brock Jr.
Dissertations and Theses
Words need a context to be understood. Visual patterns also need a context to convey their meaning. When patterns represent quantities in business graphics, decision makers (DMs) depend on contrasting visual contexts to discern patterns and discover relationships. Depending on the context in which DMs see trends, differences between two trends may point to a problem, to continuity, or to an opportunity. Can enhancing the context in computer graphics help DMs visualize problems? To answer this research question, three experiments were done in the field on computer graphics. One hundred five DMs tried 17 different contexts for time-series trends displayed …
Fuzzy Multiobjective Mathematical Programming In Economic Systems Analysis: Design And Method, Li Da Xu
Fuzzy Multiobjective Mathematical Programming In Economic Systems Analysis: Design And Method, Li Da Xu
Dissertations and Theses
Economic systems analysis is a systems analysis technique of setting out the factors that have to be taken into account in making economic systems decisions. The inquiring and operational systems of the technique are almost exclusively designed for well-structured systems. In review of economic systems analysis against systems thinking, there is a growing tendency to discard the analytical approach as inappropriate for dealing with an ill-structured issue. Therefore, economic systems analysis needs both the inquiring and operational systems which are appropriate for ill-structured systems. The foregoing leads to the introduction of an extensive methodology. Mainly, the weakness of economic systems …

An Econometric Study Of An Oil-Exporting Country: The Case Of Iran, Abbas Heiat
Dissertations and Theses
The main objective of this study is to contribute toward an analytical and empirical work on the oil-based developing economy of Iran. It focuses on the aggregate behavior of the Iranian economy through a simple linear econometric model. After a survey of the literature on the theoretical framework of macroeconomic models for the developing countries in general, and for the oil exporting developing countries in particular, a linear econometric model for the Iranian economy is formulated and its logical and economical aspects are explained. The proposed model consists of basic consumption, production, foreign trade, and employment relationships. Estimation of the …
