Pacific Northwest Measles Epidemic Of 1847-1848, Robert T. Boyd
Pacific Northwest Measles Epidemic Of 1847-1848, Robert T. Boyd
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Most students of Pacific Northwest history are familiar with the 1847-48 measles epidemic because of its association with the killing of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman by Cayuse Indians, on November 29, 1847, at a missionary site some four miles west of present-day Walla Walla, Washington. It is also generally known that, prior to the violence, the epidemic had ravaged the Cayuse who then lived near the Whitmans' Waiilatpu Mission. And, finally, it has been widely thought that the disease was brought to the region by American migrants traveling over the Oregon Trail. This relatively well-known story about what has come …

Genetic Algorithms And Artificial Life, Melanie Mitchell, Stephanie Forrest
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Genetic algorithms are computational models of evolution that play a central role in many artificial-life models. We review the history and current scope of research on genetic algorithms in artificial life, giving illustrative examples in which the genetic algorithm is used to study how learning and evolution interact, and to model ecosystems, immune system, cognitive systems, and social systems. We also outline a number of open questions and future directions for genetic algorithms in artificial-life research
Decentralization Of Urban Service Activities: An Empirical Study, Wonseon Kyung
Decentralization Of Urban Service Activities: An Empirical Study, Wonseon Kyung
Dissertations and Theses
Post-war metropolitan development in the United States has been mainly due to suburban growth which resulted in dispersal of population, retailing, manufacturing, wholesaling and services. What is known about service suburbanization is primarily derived from survey research on location choices done in localized cases. There has been no comprehensive work done using secondary data on revealed behavior.
This dissertation attempts that comprehensive study. The research analyzes the dynamics of locational structure of services in U.S. metropolitan areas from 1969 to 1989. The descriptive analysis of changes in the location coefficients provides evidence to demonstrate a spatial shifting of consumer oriented …

Adaptive Execution Of Data Parallel Computations On Networks Of Heterogeneous Workstations, Robert Prouty, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole
Adaptive Execution Of Data Parallel Computations On Networks Of Heterogeneous Workstations, Robert Prouty, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Parallel environments consisting of a network of heterogeneous workstations introduce an inherently dynamic environment that differs from multicomputers. Workstations are usually considered “shared” resources while multicomputers provide dedicated processing power. The number of workstations available for use is continually changing; the parallel machine presented by the network is in effect continually reconfiguring itself. Application programs must effectively adapt to the changing number of processing nodes while maintaining computational efficiency. This paper examines methods for adapting to this dynamic environment within the framework of explicit message passing under the data parallel programming model. We present four requirements which we feel a …

Questions-Asking Strategies Of Aphasic And Normal Subjects, Sharla Rae Harvey
Questions-Asking Strategies Of Aphasic And Normal Subjects, Sharla Rae Harvey
Dissertations and Theses
Problem-solving abilities of individuals with aphasia have received limited attention in their assessment and remediation. At this time, there is substantially more information available on the linguistic performance of persons with aphasia than on their cognitive processing performance. Assessment of problem-solving abilities in this population has typically used tasks with low verbal loadings. However, both linguistic and cognitive competence are required for effective communication and activities of daily life.
The purpose of the present study was to determine if mild-to-moderate subjects with aphasia differed in their question-asking strategies as compared with normal subjects. A modification of Mosher and Hornsby's (1966) …

Comet: A Synthetic Benchmark For Message-Passing Architectures, Nalini Ganapati, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole
Comet: A Synthetic Benchmark For Message-Passing Architectures, Nalini Ganapati, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Rapid advances in hardware technology have led to wide diversity in parallel computer architectures. This diversity makes it difficult to evaluate or compare the performance of different parallel computers. Existing benchmarks tend either to be too architecture-specific, or too high-level. Both problems can result in benchmarks that not only provide insufficient information on the performance characteristics of the computer being tested, but are also difficult to port. New benchmarking approaches are needed for new architectural classes, particularly distributed-memory, message-passing computers. This paper focuses on benchmarking distributed-memory message-passing computers. A synthetic benchmark called CoMet (COmmunication METrics), is presented. CoMet is based …

Settlement Patterns In The Portland Region: A Historical Overview, Carl Abbott
Settlement Patterns In The Portland Region: A Historical Overview, Carl Abbott
Portland Regional Planning History
Cities exist because they serve two basic functions--to generate economic value and to sustain social and cultural values. In the most fundamental sense, the interaction of these two urban roles determines the growth of metropolitan areas and patterns of land use and settlement within those urban areas.
Within this framework of metropolitan functions, five factors have strongly affected American urban settlement patterns. The first section of this report briefly introduces these broad forces. The central section traces in detail the ways in which the factors have shaped settlement and land use in the Portland area over the last 150 years. …
The Schooling Of Vietnamese-American High School Students In Oregon: Their Perspectives, Minh Van Tran
The Schooling Of Vietnamese-American High School Students In Oregon: Their Perspectives, Minh Van Tran
Dissertations and Theses
Research on the education of Vietnamese-Americans is very limited, and mainstream media continue to project Vietnamese students either as high achievers or gang affiliated (Castro, 1983; Davis & McDaid, 1992). This kind of projection can mask the real issues that Vietnamese students are facing. Based on Cummins' (1979) Contextual Interaction Theory, this study examined the views of Vietnamese-American high school students in Oregon regarding their schooling under four major areas: Community Background Factors, Educational Input Factors, Instructional Treatment, and Student Input Factors. In particular, this study examined factors, within the above four areas, pertaining to the schooling of Vietnamese-American high …
A Study Of Personal Attributes Associated With Marginality And Failure Of Preservice Teachers In The Terminal Field Experience, Sharon Irene Bancroft
A Study Of Personal Attributes Associated With Marginality And Failure Of Preservice Teachers In The Terminal Field Experience, Sharon Irene Bancroft
Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the impact of personal attributes on student teachers' failure to pass or marginal success in the terminal field experience. Interviews were conducted of faculty at five Washington and two Oregon teacher education programs, who served as supervisors of student teaching. The interview was of the "depth" type described by Masserik (1981,) open-ended, interactive, and designed to encourage the sharing of case histories and subjective experience according to interpretive inquiry protocol as outlined by Lincoln and Guba (1985.) Its goal was to surface fundamental assumptions about and idiosyncratic language used to describe those attributes deemed critical to a …

Total Quality Management: The Case For The Public Sector: A Comparative Study Of The Implementation Of Total Quality Management In Three Health Care Organizations, Zayed Mohammed Abu
Dissertations and Theses
Total quality management [TQM] is an approach to improving the competitiveness, effectiveness and flexibility of the whole organization through the improvement of the organizational processes and those who perform them. There has been a rising interest among public sector professionals in examining the applicability and usefulness of TQM methods to public organizations. This research provides descriptive information about the experience of three health care organizations that vary in terms of ownership, whether being publicly or privately owned, with implementing TQM. Participants at these organizations were interviewed, and/or surveyed and observed. The study provides a narrative description of each organization's experience …
Oregon Primary Care Physicians' Support For Health Care Reform, Timothy Alan Baker
Oregon Primary Care Physicians' Support For Health Care Reform, Timothy Alan Baker
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation studies Oregon primary care physicians' attitudes toward health care reform. Two models of reform are examined: one, health care rationing such as that proposed by the Oregon Health Plan (OHP); and, two, support for national health insurance (NHI).
This work examines the necessity for changing the present health care system, traced from the early origins of the medical profession to the present day health care "crisis." The high cost of health care is examined and an overview of the OHP is provided, including citations from John Kitzhaber, M.D., author of the plan.
Overall, Oregon primary care physicians overwhelmingly …

We report the results of inelastic neutron-scattering measurements on Rb2.6K0.4C60. Librational modes were observed as broad peaks with maxima between 4.1 and 4.7 meV, as the temperature is lowered from 300 to 12 K. As in K3C60, no change in the width or position of the librational peak was observed when the sample was cooled through the superconducting transition. Thus any coupling of the librations to electronic states is small. The magnitude of the orientational potential barrier was estimated from the librational peak frequency. A flat background observed in the …

Private Profit Versus Public Service: Competing Demands In Urban Transportation History And Policy, Portland, Oregon, 1872-1970, Martha J. Bianco
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is a case study of the history of urban transportation policy in Portland, Oregon, between 1872 and 1970. The emphasis is on mass transit policy formulated and implemented by the private and public sectors as response to crises within both the local transit industry and the urban political economy. These crises are placed in the context of the continuing conflict between the industry's right to profit and its obligation to meet the competing demands of its constituencies: ridership's demands for low fares and comprehensive service; labor's demands for competitive wages; downtown businesses' demands for peak-hour service; and the …

Case Studies Of The Structure, Dynamics, And Outcomes Of Interdisciplinary Team Organization In Oregon Middle Schools, Gail Lyon
Dissertations and Theses
Middle school literature advocates interdisciplinary team organization as a structure that enhances student learning and teacher satisfaction. In an interdisciplinary team, teachers responsible for different content areas collaboratively plan the instructional program for a shared group of students. Yet, fewer than fifty percent of the nation's middle schools use an interdisciplinary team structure, and research indicates that teams are fragile and temporary. Few studies were found that described interdisciplinary team organization at the team or individual teacher level.
The purpose of this case study is to describe the structure, dynamics, and outcomes of interdisciplinary teams of teachers in middle schools. …
