Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The molecular and isotopic compositions of lipid biomarkers of cultured Aquificales genera have been used to study the community and trophic structure of the hyperthermophilic pink streamers and vent biofilm from Octopus Spring. Thermocrinis ruber, Thermocrinis sp. strain HI 11/12, Hydrogenobacter thermophilus TK-6, Aquifex pyrophilus, and Aquifex aeolicus all contained glycerol-ether phospholipids as well as acyl glycerides. The n-C20:1 and cy-C21 fatty acids dominated all of the Aquificales, while the alkyl glycerol ethers were mainly C18:0. These Aquificales biomarkers were major constituents of the lipid extracts of two Octopus Spring samples, a biofilm associated with the siliceous vent walls, and …

Reading Techniques Employed By Mothers Vs. Fathers During Storybook Reading Events With Their Child, Kameron Brief Beaulieu Jul 2001

Reading Techniques Employed By Mothers Vs. Fathers During Storybook Reading Events With Their Child, Kameron Brief Beaulieu

Dissertations and Theses

Research demonstrates that engaging children in storybook reading positively relates to the development of early literacy skills. Parents use a variety of techniques to facilitate interactions when reading to a child. Past research suggests that these techniques may have measurable effects on language and literacy development.

The purpose of this study was to investigate reading events shared by parents and their preschool aged children to determine if differences are present in the didactic techniques and language used by fathers and mothers. The primary research question addressed by this study was: Are there differences in reading techniques employed by mothers and …

An Antidote To The Anesthetic: A Diary Study, Carol Rasmussen Schramm Jul 2001

An Antidote To The Anesthetic: A Diary Study, Carol Rasmussen Schramm

Dissertations and Theses

The teaching experiences of an American ESL teacher, recorded in a critically reflective diary, for the basis for this study. Through analysis of the diary, the culturally formed and framed attitudes, beliefs, and assumptions of the teacher are explored in an attempt to understand the dialectic relationship between the diarist's culture and the cultures of her students. The researcher believes that increases in awareness in these areas can lead to improved teaching practice. Thus, one goal of this study is the professional development of its author.

The literature in the field of TESOL does not adequately address the impact of …

Form Or Function First In Foreign Language Classrooms?, Senta Görtler Jul 2001

Form Or Function First In Foreign Language Classrooms?, Senta Görtler

Dissertations and Theses

The study was inspired by continuous discussion in the field of second language acquisition and teaching on the role of grammar instruction in successful language learning. Traditionally foreign language and second language classrooms have been taught with a pedagogical focus on language structure. More recently there has been support for second language classrooms focusing on content, function, or communication rather than form. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to compare the effectiveness of an innovative function-based classroom with a traditional form-based classroom.

During a ten-week period, one class of Intermediate German was taught in a form-based classroom while another …

Why Do We Engage In Engagement?, Judith A. Ramaley Jul 2001

Why Do We Engage In Engagement?, Judith A. Ramaley

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Universities have many reasons for seeking closer alliances and partnerships with the communities they serve. These partnerships constitute a set of mutually beneficial relationships that can challenge the traditional values of the academy. Direct involvement with community and societal issues is often considered less than scholarly by faculty and the changes necessary to promote meaningful community-campus interactions may be viewed with suspicion or anxiety by members of both the campus community and the broader community. There are many benefits associated with engagement that make the challenge of building the capacity for partnership worthwhile.

Stochastic Properties Of Spacings In A Single-Outlier Exponential Model, Baha-Eldin Khaledi, Subhash C. Kochar Jul 2001

Stochastic Properties Of Spacings In A Single-Outlier Exponential Model, Baha-Eldin Khaledi, Subhash C. Kochar

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let X1,..., Xn be independent exponential random variables with possibly different scale parameters. Kochar and Korwar [J. Multivar. Anal. 57 (1996)] conjectured that, in this case, the successive normalized spacings are increasing according to hazard rate ordering. In this article, we prove this conjecture in the case of a single-outlier exponential model when all except one of the parameters are identical. We also prove that the spacings are more dispersed and larger in the sense of hazard rate ordering when the vector of scale parameters is more dispersed in the sense of majorization.

Water Rights As Contested Terrain: The Case Of Tenmile Creek, Oregon, Marcie L. Allen Jun 2001

Water Rights As Contested Terrain: The Case Of Tenmile Creek, Oregon, Marcie L. Allen

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the complex conflict over water rights at Tenmile Creek, located along the south central Oregon Coast. The research is an exploratory case study identifying the main motivations of actors, the constraints they faced, and the conditions that encouraged or dissuaded collaborative behavior.

The main objectives are (1) to refine the understanding of the relationship between societies and their physical environment in market societies that are both motivated to exploit and preserve natural resources and, (2) to explore the kinds of institutional arrangements that may be required to manage the water supply in a collaborative and sustainable manner. …

American Consul In Jerusalem 1856-1896, Eric Vaughn Lowe Jun 2001

American Consul In Jerusalem 1856-1896, Eric Vaughn Lowe

Dissertations and Theses

The Europeans were the first ones to establish Consuls at Jerusalem. They used their consular offices to establish permanence and extend their influence in the region. Under the guise of citizen and religious protection they extended their power and influence in the Ottoman territory. The United States established its consulate in Jerusalem in 1853. In comparison with the European consuls the American Service was-new, inexperienced, and lacking professionalism. This American outpost was plagued with complexities that were distinct to the office at Jerusalem. The consul reports from 1856-1896 reflect the mission and difficulties faced at this seemingly remote outpost.

The Validity Of Parental Reports Of Preschooler’S Early Literacy Skills, Allison M. Henning Jun 2001

The Validity Of Parental Reports Of Preschooler’S Early Literacy Skills, Allison M. Henning

Dissertations and Theses

It has been well documented that children with language impairments often go on to have difficulties in reading, with many of these children not being diagnosed until first or second grade. However, research demonstrates a predictive relationship between early literacy skills and later reading and writing success. Thus, assessment of early literacy is to utilize parental reports, which have been found to provide valuable information regarding children's communicative-linguistic development.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parental reports of early literacy behaviors of their preschool children and the child's performance on informal and formal early literacy …

Effects Of Professional Interpreter Services On The Utilization Of Health Care Services Of Different Language/Cultural Groups, Amanda Fleming Petrik

Dissertations and Theses

Immigration has affected the number of U.S. residents who speak little or no English. These residents have limited English proficiency. Research studies have indicated discrepancies in medical interpretation and medical care. However, differences in health care between the language/ cultural groups are rarely recognized as health discrepancies.

This research project is a quasi-experimental design, testing differences between the four major language groups in the greater Portland, Oregon area. These four major language/cultural groups speak Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish and Russian.

A secondary data analysis was used to compare the differences in utilization of emergency room services, routine services, and urgent care …

Traditional And Non-Traditional Dispute Settlement In The Federated States Of Micronesia, Kris Tina Yurgin Cummings Jun 2001

Traditional And Non-Traditional Dispute Settlement In The Federated States Of Micronesia, Kris Tina Yurgin Cummings

Dissertations and Theses

The current U.S. mediation system is founded on a paradigm of individual focus and Western values. This model may fail to represent the various cultural components disputants from more collective cultures may bring to the mediation process. In addition, the U.S. mediation system relies on the collaboration of two or more disputants to confront the issues between them. Again, this model presupposes that confrontation is an appropriate means of conflict resolution.

The purpose of this study is to offer a different perspective of dispute settlement as practiced in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Cultural values that emphasize the social …

Visions, Values, Valuation And The Need For An Ecological Economics, Robert Costanza Jun 2001

Visions, Values, Valuation And The Need For An Ecological Economics, Robert Costanza

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Practical problem solving in complex, humandominated ecosystems requires the integration of three elements: (1) active and ongoing envisioning of both how the world works and how we would like the world to be, (2) systematic analysis appropriate to and consistent with the vision, and (3) implementation appropriate to the vision. Scientists generally focus on only the second of these steps, but integrating all three is essential to both good science and effective management. Subjective values enter in the vision element, both in terms of the formation of broad social goals and in the creation of a preanalytic vision, which necessarily precedes …

Economics Of Overloading And The Effect Of Weight Enforcement: Research Note, James G. Strathman Jun 2001

Economics Of Overloading And The Effect Of Weight Enforcement: Research Note, James G. Strathman

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This note describes the economic rationale for exceeding weight limits by motor carriers in the face of weight enforcement activities. Patterns of weight enforcement practices by states are identified reflecting differences in enforcement intensity and the severity of penalties imposed for exceeding weight limits. Statistical analysis of weight enforcement data shows that the marginal effects of enforcement intensity and penalties are similar in deterring overloading, with most of the enforcement-related deterrence attributable to the use of portable/semi-portable scales.

Strengthening Small Business Clusters Serving Minority Communities, April Bertelsen, Jacob Brostoff, Lucia Ramirez, Angela Shibley, Ernest Tipton Jun 2001

Strengthening Small Business Clusters Serving Minority Communities, April Bertelsen, Jacob Brostoff, Lucia Ramirez, Angela Shibley, Ernest Tipton

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The existence of thriving and numerous small businesses is instrumental to generating wealth within a community. They provide a diverse employment base for local residents, leading to greater economic stability. Small businesses create opportunities for keeping dollars circulating within the community, multiplying the benefits of those dollars. Creating such internal-multipliers within the economy of a community is a strategy for strengthening the community as a whole. This benefit extends to communities of color, immigrant communities, ethnic minority communities, and sexual minority communities.

Not all minority communities share in common a geographic location. They can be found residing in a relatively …

Oregon Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma Jun 2001

Oregon Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) are a serious problem in Oregon. There are currently over 134 nonindigenous aquatic species reported in Oregon. More species are expected to arrive. Current state activities and authorities address some ANS, their prevention, and control. Yet, the activities are not coordinated or comprehensively managing the impacts of ANS. The importance of Oregon’s aquatic resources requires a coherent response to the threat posed by ANS. This management plan is the initial step in establishing a program in Oregon to specifically address ANS issues.

Infopipes—An Abstraction For Information Flow, Jie Huang, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Jun 2001

Infopipes—An Abstraction For Information Flow, Jie Huang, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Building Object-Oriented Distributed Systems has been facilitated by Remote Message Sending (RMS) systems like Java RMI and implementations of CORBA. However, RMS systems are designed to support request/response interactions. Streaming applications, in contrast, are characterized by high-bandwidth, long-duration communication with stringent performance requirements. Examples of streaming applications include video-on-demand, teleconferencing, on-line education, and environmental observation. These applications transfer huge amounts of data and focus on distributed information flow rather than request/response.

To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow—Infopipes. Using Infopipes, information flow becomes the heart of the system, not an …

A Question Of Neutrality: Divorce Mediation Literature, The Role Of The Mediator, And Perspectives On Bias, Cory Michael Mathews May 2001

A Question Of Neutrality: Divorce Mediation Literature, The Role Of The Mediator, And Perspectives On Bias, Cory Michael Mathews

Dissertations and Theses

Research on mediation processes have addressed the role of the mediator, but often obliquely. In divorce mediation, the literature has sketched various approaches to the role, which diverge from each other in some significant ways. What is lacking is an integrated picture as to how these approaches to the field differ on key questions in the practice of divorce mediation.

This thesis is a preliminary attempt at such an integrated sketch, focusing on the question of whether or not the mediator is truly neutral in the process. Two major schools of thought of emerge from the literature, here referred to …

An Analysis Of Sex Trafficking In The Asian Region In An Era Of Globalization, Corie J. Hammers May 2001

An Analysis Of Sex Trafficking In The Asian Region In An Era Of Globalization, Corie J. Hammers

Dissertations and Theses

Globalization, spurred on by capitalist principles, seeks the integration of countries and their economies into a single global market. Global integration has impacted countries in many ways, often negatively. Phenomena such as the illicit trade in weapons, drugs, and people for their sexual and/or physical labor, have also been facilitated by globalization. Specifically examined in this study were a) patterns of sex trafficking of women and girls in four countries: India, Nepal, the Philippines, and Thailand, and b) the various ways globalization has both impacted women's status within these countries and facilitated the sex trade.

One manifestation of globalization has …

Eyes Of The Mirror, Margaret Jane Emerson Apr 2001

Eyes Of The Mirror, Margaret Jane Emerson

Dissertations and Theses

Eyes of the Mirror is a memoir of transition. Chronologically, it begins with a kind of death in 1996 when the author was forty-eight. Exhausted and disillusioned, she ended her first life as a successful but financially struggling potter, writer, and T'ai Chi instructor. Over the course of twenty-four years, the strain of following a bliss that lay outside of the economy had worn her out. As a first step in the creation of a new life, she earned a certificate in teaching English and accepted a job in South Korea. After two harsh and challenging years there, she returned …
