White Bashing? Teaching "Hot-Button" Issues Via Indirection, Jack C. Straton Jan 2009

White Bashing? Teaching "Hot-Button" Issues Via Indirection, Jack C. Straton

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The biggest barriers to learning about racism, sexism, and the other oppressions, are the non-rational aversive reactions most of us have to the material and to the learning process. When men truly inquire into the lives of women, we come face to face with a horrible reality that just "cannot be true," but is. When those of us of European heritage inquire into the lives of those whose ancestors came from the other continents, what we find often makes us flinch at its brutality. We feel guilty for what "whites" or men have done, and most of us don't like …

Heuristics In Decision Making, Fatima M. Albar, Antonie J. Jetter Jan 2009

Heuristics In Decision Making, Fatima M. Albar, Antonie J. Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Heuristics are simple rules of thumbs for problem solving that follow a logic that is quite different from consequential logic. They have long been regarded, as an inferior technique for decision making that is the source of irrational decision behavior. Recently, decision making researchers have demonstrated that some heuristics are highly efficient and can compete with complex decision models in some application domains. This paper explores the different streams of research, summarizes the state of the art decision making model, and discusses its implications for complex decisions in engineering and technology management.

Theoretical Framework For Managing The Front End Of Innovation Under Uncertainty, Antonie J. Jetter, Richard Sperry Jan 2009

Theoretical Framework For Managing The Front End Of Innovation Under Uncertainty, Antonie J. Jetter, Richard Sperry

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

A growing body of research suggests that the fuzzy front-end of product development should not be managed with a one-size-fits-all standard process. Instead, projects with different market and technical uncertainties should be managed with one of five different processes (linear, recursive, evolving, selectionism, trial-and-error). Based on a review of the literature, the paper develops a theoretical framework for front-end management which provides the foundation for ongoing empirical research.

Evaluating Similarity-Based Trace Reduction Techniques For Scalable Performance Analysis, Kathryn Marie Mohror, Karen L. Karavanic Jan 2009

Evaluating Similarity-Based Trace Reduction Techniques For Scalable Performance Analysis, Kathryn Marie Mohror, Karen L. Karavanic

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Event traces are required to correctly diagnose a number of performance problems that arise on today’s highly parallel systems. Unfortunately, the collection of event traces can produce a large volume of data that is difficult, or even impossible, to store and analyze. One approach for compressing a trace is to identify repeating trace patterns and retain only one representative of each pattern. However, determining the similarity of sections of traces, i.e., identifying patterns, is not straightforward. In this paper, we investigate pattern-based methods for reducing traces that will be used for performance analysis. We evaluate the different methods against several …

Finding Irc-Like Meshes Sans Layer 7 Payloads, Akshay Dua, Jim Binkley, Suresh Singh Jan 2009

Finding Irc-Like Meshes Sans Layer 7 Payloads, Akshay Dua, Jim Binkley, Suresh Singh

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present an algorithm for detecting IRC-like chat networks that does not rely on Layer 7 payload information. The goal is to extract only those meshes from conventional flows where long-term periodic data is being exchanged between an external server and multiple internal clients. Flow data is passed through a series of filters that reduce the memory requirements needed for final candidate mesh sorting. Final outputs consist of two sorted lists including the fanout list, sorted by the number of client hosts in the mesh, and a secondary list called the evil sort. The latter consists of meshes with any …

Land Use Based Crime Rates: Exploring Patterns Of Land Use And Crime Rates In Coquitlam And Port Coquitlam, Kathryn Wuschke Jan 2009

Land Use Based Crime Rates: Exploring Patterns Of Land Use And Crime Rates In Coquitlam And Port Coquitlam, Kathryn Wuschke

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

While it is certainly valuable to understand the counts of specific crime types by location, in order to contextualize the relationships between these features, rates are needed. Table 1 further explores this relationship by calculating the rate of each crime by land use. While rates are often employed using population as a denominator, such a measure is not practical when exploring crime at the parcel level. In this case, rates have been calculated according to crimes per 100 lots, producing an understandable and comparable value across all categories of land use and crime.

Land Use & Crime: Coquitlam/Port Coquitlam: Exploring How Violent, Property, Mischief And Drug Offences Relate To Land Uses, Kathryn Wuschke

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam are two suburban cities that are currently undergoing rapid physical changes. In order to accommodate growing urban populations both within these locations, and in the wider surrounding region, Coquitlam Centre area has been designated as a Regional City Centre. It is intended to act as a downtown core for the neighbouring municipalities, and as such, is experiencing rapid redevelopment, focusing on mixed land uses and dense residential/commercial mixes. In an effort to understand and model the shifts in crime types and densities that may be associated with this redevelopment, ICURS has begun exploration of the relationship …

Debord, Constant, And The Politics Of Situationist Urbanism, Brian Elliott Jan 2009

Debord, Constant, And The Politics Of Situationist Urbanism, Brian Elliott

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the first years of its existence between 1957 and 1960 the efforts of the radical collective the Situationist International (SI) centred on its program of "unitary urbanism." This program sought to challenge the functionalist character of hegemonic forms of urban planning through novel practices of urban experimentation and contestation. Situationist urbanism arose largely through the collaboration between Guy Debord and the Dutch avant-garde architect Constant. This article explores the political dimension of situationist urbanism and the tensions that led to Constant’s secession from the group in 1960. Through analysis of the affinities and divergences between urbanism in its modernist …

Making Sense Of Schools: Perceptions Of Student Teacher Interns, Laura Holyoke, Albert H. Fein Jan 2009

Making Sense Of Schools: Perceptions Of Student Teacher Interns, Laura Holyoke, Albert H. Fein

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Pre-service teacher education programs focus on pedagogy, often with little attention to the school environment. During internships, pre-service teachers experience unique school cultures without understanding that these vary, consequently, completing the internship with the mistaken notion that all schools are like their intern experiences. An assignment to help pre-service teachers understand the nature of schools drew upon The Truth About School Violence: Keeping Healthy Schools Safe, by Jared Scherz. Interns wrote about everyday situations they observed at their schools and linked these to elements of healthy schools identified by Scherz: adaptability, infrastructure, and climate. Students described and classified their observations …

The Mani are concentrated in a restricted coastal area straddling the border between Guinea and Sierra Leone near the town of Morebaya, Kambia District, in Sierra Leone. A few other speakers are scattered in the littoral region from Conakry to Freetown.

Practices For Dispreferred Responses Using "No" By A Learner Of English, John Hellermann Jan 2009

Practices For Dispreferred Responses Using "No" By A Learner Of English, John Hellermann

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Responding in a manner that does not align with an action or affiliate with a stance implicated in just prior talk is potentially sensitive work. Conversation Analysis (CA) has shown that participants orient to the sensitive nature of sequences of talk used to project responses that do not align, or, are dispreferred (Pomerantz 1984) in some way. This paper examines such responses, especially with the use of no tokens. The talk comes from the interactions of one adult learner of English in a language learning classroom over the course of five ten-week terms. The findings show that the participant’s use …

Application Of Lrfd Geotechnical Principles For Pile Supported Bridges In Oregon: Phase 1, Trevor D. Smith, Peter Dusicka

TREC Final Reports

Bridge foundations must be designed based on acceptable risks of failure. To secure rapid implementation of Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) principles for foundation design, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are requiring their use through AASHTO code. The Bridge Section of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has responsibility for satisfactory design of all the bridge structures across the state’s highway system. The widespread geotechnical adoption of the LRFD code throughout state DOTs has been difficult in the case of deep foundations due to regional differences and in some …

Neighborhood Climate Action Planning Handbook, Hannah Dondy-Kaplan, Erica Timm, Beth Cohen, Dyami Valentine, Mariah Vanzerr, Devin Moller

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The City of Portland and Multnomah County are developing new plans and policies to meet greenhouse gas reduction goals of 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. To meet these new steep reduction targets, actions will be needed at every level of society. While neighborhoods have historically received little attention as a means of addressing climate change, they are ideally suited to bring people together to bridge the gap between individual actions and higher level government policies. To help neighborhoods develop strategies and actions to address climate change, C-Change Consultants worked with the Southeast Uplift Neighborhood Coalition to create a Neighborhood …

Three Times A Study: Business Students And The Library, Heidi Senior, Kerry Wu, Diane M. Martin, Margaret Mellinger

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Revisiting a study performed 30 years ago, researchers at three institutions surveyed undergraduate and graduate students in marketing courses to determine their attitudes toward and knowledge of library services and collections. Results found that 21st-century students are more likely to believe in the importance of library research, to have had library instruction, and to use Web sites and Internet search engines to begin their research. However, they are less likely to read business periodicals. Faced with a list of information sources, they are generally able to pick out a useful resource, although not always the most efficient. Implications for library …

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Spanish phonological development was examined in six sequential bilingual children at the point of contact with English and eight months later. We explored effects of the English vowel and consonant inventory on Spanish. Children showed a significant increase in consonant cluster accuracy and in vowel errors. These emerging sequential bilingual children showed effects of English on their first language, Spanish. Cross-linguistic transfer did not affect all properties of the phonology equally. Negative transfer may occur in specific areas where the second language is more complex, requiring reorganization of the existing system, as in the transition from the Spanish five-vowel to …

Community-Engaged Scholarship In Higher Education: An Expanding Experience, Judith A. Ramaley

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Higher education in this country has always been expected to serve the public good. Sometimes, the emphasis is on preparing educated citizens or practitioners in especially critical fields and how public service can deepen and enrich learning and prepare students to lead purposeful, responsible, and creative lives. Sometimes the focus is upon institutions themselves as major intellectual and cultural resources for a community. In this paper, based on the keynote presentation at the Community -- Engaged Scholarship for Health Collaborative's invitational symposium, the author explores four levels of engagement: the individual, the academic community and its concepts of scholarship, the …

While research extols the benefits of parent involvement in college choice, low SES African American parents are increasingly less able to match the efforts of wealthier parents. A qualitative methodology is used to explore the lives 5 urban African American single parents whose low-SES parents encouraged education for postsecondary advancement. The study found that the high school diploma was the normative credential for upward mobility in their communities. Their parents used narratives of struggle to encourage their children while utilizing maps that helped navigate the road towards a high school diploma. It concludes that a high level of involvement already …

Intersections Of Language And Race For English Language Learners, Tonda Liggett Jan 2009

Intersections Of Language And Race For English Language Learners, Tonda Liggett

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper, I discuss the intersection of linguistic and racial hierarchies for English language learners in their school community. I argue that the mapping of one social hierarchy onto another is used to create Self-Other distinctions based on linguistic background. I examine how these hierarchies framed the social context in ways that marginalized this diverse group of learners. I draw on research data from six, white, middle-class English language teachers to analyze how their students experienced this intersection. I conclude with suggestions for teacher educators to include material and curricula that examines not only structural hierarchies of language and …

What Teachers Should Know About Racism, Prejudice, And Privilege: A Literature Review, Karie Mize Jan 2009

What Teachers Should Know About Racism, Prejudice, And Privilege: A Literature Review, Karie Mize

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Although racial groupings are not biologically determined, socially constructed racial categorizations greatly influence an individual’s material conditions and lived experiences. Social, economic, political, and educational realms are stratified as a result of racism, or the racist structures embedded in institutions and policies that allow whites to control the majority of resources. The extent to which the dominant group is collectively privileged in the United States’ society is difficult for whites to fully comprehend due to their social position. Teacher candidates need to understand the ways in which economic and social manifestations of racism affect educational institutions, which in turn perpetuates …
