Stability Criteria For Spontaneously Pulsing Gas Lasers, Pitak Chenkosol, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Low-threshold spontaneous pulsations are known to occur in the output beams of certain high-gain gas lasers, and good agreement between the experimental observations and numerical models has been achieved. There have also been several analytical studies of threshold criteria for spontaneously pulsing lasers. However, the analytical studies are mostly not applicable to the lasers in which the pulsations have been observed. Stability criteria for high-gain gas lasers are derived in this study, and these criteria are compared with a previously modeled gas laser instability.

Increasing The Reliability Of Ecological Models Using Modern Software Engineering Techniques, Robert M. Scheller, Brian R. Sturtevant, Eric J. Gustafson, Brendan C. Ward, David J. Mladenoff

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Modern software development techniques are largely unknown to ecologists. Typically, ecological models and other software tools are developed for limited research purposes, and additional capabilities are added later, usually in an ad hoc manner. Modern software engineering techniques can substantially increase scientific rigor and confidence in ecological models and tools. These techniques have the potential to transform how ecological software is conceived and developed, improve precision, reduce errors, and increase scientific credibility. We describe our re-engineering of the forest landscape model LANDIS (LANdscape DIsturbance and Succession) to illustrate the advantages of using common software engineering practices.

State Experiences With Affordable Housing Plus Services: Report To Seniors And Persons With Disabilities, On The Move, Paula C. Carder, Erika Zoller

Institute on Aging Publications

Housing developers, providers, policy makers, and advocates, increasingly recognize that for some groups of individuals, access to affordable housing alone is "not enough." That is, some individuals require more than shelter. Examples include individuals who have chronic health conditions (e.g., HIV/AIDS), those with physical or cognitive limitations (e.g., persons with developmental disabilities, adults with physical disabilities), and those who have a combination of health conditions or who cannot thrive in traditional housing (e.g., persons who have been homeless, individuals with chronic mental illness). Increasingly, housing providers, social service agencies, advocates, states, and federal agencies have recognized the need to combine …

This paper focuses on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) among foreign language (FL) graduate students from three universities, who worked together to create a wiki. In order to investigate the nature of CSCL among participants, this qualitative case study used the Curtis and Lawson framework (2001) to conduct a content analysis of learners’ collaborative behaviors. Transcript and survey analyses indicate that the success of collaborative interaction depends largely on the group members themselves. Differing levels of participation indicate that not everyone was equally involved with the wiki project, which ultimately affected the level of collaboration, the group dynamics, and the final …

Invasive Species Management Plan For Oswego Lake, Daniel Warren, Mark Sytsma

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

This Invasive Species Management Plan defines an overarching strategy for the Lake Oswego Corporation (LOC) to mitigate threats from invasive species to Oswego Lake. Invasive species pose a direct risk to recreational and aesthetic uses of the lake, critical LOC infrastructure, and ecological communities within the lake. The Plan is particularly concerned with two bivalve mollusks in the genus Dreissena: the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) and the quagga mussel (Dreissena bugensis). These mussels grow in dense colonies that damage watercraft and underwater structures as well as displace native species. A recent scientific report found that …

Operationalizing The Antecedents Of Work-Family Positive Spillover: A Longitudinal Study, Kristi Lynn Zimmerman Jun 2009

Operationalizing The Antecedents Of Work-Family Positive Spillover: A Longitudinal Study, Kristi Lynn Zimmerman

Dissertations and Theses

The primary goal of the current study was to examine the antecedents of work-to-family and family-to-work positive spillover. This dissertation examined the relationship between work, family, and personal domain resources with the outcomes of work-to-family and family-to-work positive spillover. Specifically, five types of resources were tested as predictors of positive spillover as proposed by Greenhaus and Powell's (2006) theory of work-family enrichment. To test these relationships, constructs from the work and family domains were used to operationalize each of the proposed resources, and a longitudinal research design was applied in order to establish these resources as predictors of positive spillover. …

In considering ways in which those experiences may have helped shape teaching philosophies and practices, the study …

Monte Carlo Green's Function Formalism For The Propagation Of Partially Coherent Light, Scott A. Prahl, David G. Fischer, Donald D. Duncan Jun 2009

Monte Carlo Green's Function Formalism For The Propagation Of Partially Coherent Light, Scott A. Prahl, David G. Fischer, Donald D. Duncan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a Monte Carlo-derived Green's function for the propagation of partially spatially coherent fields. This Green's function, which is derived by sampling Huygens-Fresnel wavelets, can be used to propagate fields through an optical system and to compute first- and second-order field statistics directly. The concept is illustrated for a cylindrical f/1 imaging system. A Gaussian copula is used to synthesize realizations of a Gaussian Schell-model field in the pupil plane. Physical optics and Monte Carlo predictions are made for the first- and second-order statistics of the field in the vicinity of the focal plane for a variety of source …

The Incorporation Of Direct Democracy : Populism And Initiative Practices As Contested Terrain, Larry Galizio Jun 2009

The Incorporation Of Direct Democracy : Populism And Initiative Practices As Contested Terrain, Larry Galizio

Dissertations and Theses

What are the democratic implications of the increasing professionalization of direct democracy?

The dissertation takes a critical approach to the "initiative-industrial complex" and offers a counter-thesis to prevailing scholarly research on the substantial growth in the use of political consultants in initiative campaigns. The political economic analysis approaches direct legislation campaigns and elections as constituent parts of a system of legitimation for the existing set of social relations.

An historical analysis reveals that the contemporary era of initiative activity rivals that of its frequent use during the populist and progressive eras; and that in the early 21st century direct legislation …

Metamaterial Devices For The Terahertz Band, Gabriel Paul Kniffin Jun 2009

Metamaterial Devices For The Terahertz Band, Gabriel Paul Kniffin

Center for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication Publications and Presentations

Terahertz (THz) and metamaterials are both hot topics in electromagnetics research. The THz band (0.1-10 THz) lies in the ‘gap’ between microwave and far infrared regions. Research is currently underway to characterize how these waves interact with matter, with potential applications including security screening, medical imaging, and non-destructive evaluation. Metamaterials are artificial materials containing sub-wavelength structures whose material properties, μ and ǫ can be ‘tuned’ to desired specifications, including simultaneously negative values, resulting in exotic properties such as a negative refractive index. Current metamaterials research includes the design of devices that operate at THz frequencies, filling a niche left wide …

Paving The Way: Recruiting Students Into The Transportation Professions, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Jennifer Dill Jun 2009

Paving The Way: Recruiting Students Into The Transportation Professions, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Jennifer Dill

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The transportation industry faces a growing shortage of professional engineers and planners. One key strategy in solving this problem will be to encourage more civil engineering and urban planning students to specialize in transportation while completing their degrees, so that employers have a larger pool of likely recruits. However, very little is known about how these students choose a specialization. To help fill that gap, this report examines the factors that lead civil engineering undergraduates and urban planning masters students to specialize in transportation, as opposed to other sub-disciplines within the two fields. The primary data collection methods were web-based …

"Green" Transportation Taxes And Fees: A Survey Of Californians, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Jennifer Dill, Hilary Kathleen Nixon Jun 2009

"Green" Transportation Taxes And Fees: A Survey Of Californians, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Jennifer Dill, Hilary Kathleen Nixon

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

This report explores public opinion on a new and promising concept―green transportation taxes and fees. These are taxes and fees set at variable rates, with higher rates for more polluting vehicles and lower rates for those that pollute less. This approach to transportation taxes and fees adapts the traditional transportation finance system to achieve two critical public benefits at once: encouraging drivers to choose more environmentally-friendly transportation options and raising revenue for needed transportation programs. To test public support for green transportation taxes and fees, the authors conducted a random telephone survey of 1,500 Californians that asked respondents their views …
