The ‘Girl Student’ And Modernity: Imagining A Place For Women In The New Nation, Kayla Fish May 2019

The ‘Girl Student’ And Modernity: Imagining A Place For Women In The New Nation, Kayla Fish

University Honors Theses

The modern Chinese 'girl student' was born in a context of great upheaval and redefinition within Chinese society. The ability to produce a generation of educated and civic-minded young people was integral to various reform projects at the turn of the twentieth century--doing so would develop a widespread sense of belonging to the cause of national salvation. This meant introducing a modern education system and engaging with the general population of China in unprecedented ways, including extending opportunities previously unavailable to large portions of the population. I situate my research within this phenomenon, where the young female student takes on …

Insta-Identity : The Construction Of Identity Through Instagram An Extended Literature Review, Bailey Seibel May 2019

Insta-Identity : The Construction Of Identity Through Instagram An Extended Literature Review, Bailey Seibel

University Honors Theses

A person's ability to curate, communicate, and perceive their identity through the exploration and sharing of selfhood has never been easier thanks to social media applications that promote user-generated content and encourage self-promotion through computer-mediated communication within a social network. This paper analyzes the role Instagram has in the construction of identity by reviewing existing literature on identity theories, with a focus on communication theory of identity, as well as the methodologies behind representing self to see how they apply to the features and frameworks of Instagram. Based on the review it is argued that social media applications such as …

Testing The Bechdel Test, Kathryn Gray Bouchat May 2019

Testing The Bechdel Test, Kathryn Gray Bouchat

University Honors Theses

This paper examines the Bechdel Test and its accuracy in measuring the progressiveness of films. The Bechdel Test is a set of parameters that are used to measure a film's representation of women; for a film to pass the Bechdel Test, two named women must talk to each other about something other than a man. In the United States, 40% of films still fail this test. The representation of women in film, especially teenage girls, creates a negative stereotype; it shows that they are aggressive and only care about their male love interests. The experiment in this paper compares two …

Pilot Study Investigating The Effectiveness Of The Active Workplace Study Through A Dissemination Lens, Mary Beth Barnum May 2019

Pilot Study Investigating The Effectiveness Of The Active Workplace Study Through A Dissemination Lens, Mary Beth Barnum

University Honors Theses

There are many studies demonstrating the health risks associated with low physical activity and sedentary behavior. Considering that much of an adult’s time prior to retirement is spent in their work environment, researchers have recognized that sedentary work environments play a significant role in a person’s overall level of sedentary behavior and physical activity. Researchers are therefore examining workplace intervention programs aimed to minimize sedentary behavior and improve the overall working environment, including interpersonal and intrapersonal communications between employees and their supervisors. However, in order for this research to positively impact the large population of sedentary workers it is important …

Mobile Augmented Reality And Language-Related Episodes, Tetyana Sydorenko, John Hellermann, Steven L. Thorne, Vanessa Howe May 2019

Mobile Augmented Reality And Language-Related Episodes, Tetyana Sydorenko, John Hellermann, Steven L. Thorne, Vanessa Howe

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Applications of locative media (e.g., place‐based mobile augmented reality [AR]) are used in various educational content areas and have been shown to provide learners with valuable opportunities for investigation‐based learning, location‐situated social and collaborative interaction, and embodied experience of place (Squire, 2009; Thorne & Hellermann, 2017; Zheng et al., 2018). Mobile locative media applications’ value for language learning, however, remains underinvestigated. To address this lacuna, this study employed the widely used construct of language‐related episodes (LREs; Swain & Lapkin, 1998) as a unit of analysis to investigate language learning through participation in a mobile AR game. Analysis of videorecorded interactions …

Brand Logo Shape And Brand Personality, Kyle P. Gold May 2019

Brand Logo Shape And Brand Personality, Kyle P. Gold

University Honors Theses

Brand logos are a critical element of brand image equity in the process of visually conveying brand values to a consumer base. While previous studies have discussed logo design elements like color, typography, and complexity on their ability to convey brand attributes - little research has been done on logo shape. This study examines the relationship between brand logo shape - that of the geometric outline of a logo - and the concept of brand personality. To accomplish this, stimuli was created and presented via survey to test if consumers could recognize brand personality factors from a series of designed …

Simultaneous Bilingual Middle School Students Becoming Biliterate: What Do Students Think About Their Biliteracy As Taught Through The "Bridge" Strategy In A Humanities Dual Language/Immersion Class?, Alma Lucinda Diaz-Philipp May 2019

Simultaneous Bilingual Middle School Students Becoming Biliterate: What Do Students Think About Their Biliteracy As Taught Through The "Bridge" Strategy In A Humanities Dual Language/Immersion Class?, Alma Lucinda Diaz-Philipp

Dissertations and Theses

In response to the increasing number of United States school students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds at all grade levels, often called "simultaneous bilinguals," the U.S. school districts are opening schools that offer bilingual instruction. One instructional strategy that seems promising is the "Bridge," where students contrast and connect the literacy skills learned in one language to the literacy skills in their other language. An underlying component of learning a language is student attitude and motivation to learn. Research also seems to indicate that student attitude and motivation toward biliteracy can affect their achievement. There seems to be a …

A Present-Situation Analysis And Needs Assessment Of Latinx Workers In The Portland Fast-Food Industry: A Study Of Their Employment Journeys & Job-Related Language Needs, Livia Z. Lichtenstein-Hershman May 2019

A Present-Situation Analysis And Needs Assessment Of Latinx Workers In The Portland Fast-Food Industry: A Study Of Their Employment Journeys & Job-Related Language Needs, Livia Z. Lichtenstein-Hershman

University Honors Theses

This case study illustrates the employment journeys and experiences of three Latinx fast-food industry service workers. Analyses of in-depth interviews reveals while participants share comparable employment histories, they also demonstrate differences in regard to the paths to management they have experienced, and their level of language confidence at work. All participants in this study have been offered and have declined management positions. First, this analysis suggests there is a myriad of reasons besides a lack of English language skills regarding why Latinx fast food restaurant workers may not assume management positions. These reasons include participants lacking the following: time to …

Webinar: Engaging Youth To Choose Car-Free Mobility, Autumn Shafer

TREC Webinar Series

Today’s youth are tomorrow’s riders, bikers, walkers, voters, and transportation planners. As more transit agencies begin to offer free fare passes to public middle and high school students, it is important to have good communication strategy in place to encourage transit usage so they don't miss out on the potential to affect behavior change.

Thus, transit agencies need to develop age-appropriate messaging strategies and tactics that promote youth car-free mobility.

This webinar will present results from a NITC research project that sought to create and evaluate communication messaging that fosters more positive attitudes, intentions, and behaviors related to transit and …

Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy May 2019

Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy

Dissertations and Theses

Abraded and crumpled encryption allows communication software such as messaging platforms to ensure privacy for their users while still allowing for some investigation by law enforcement. Crumpled encryption ensures that each decryption is costly and prevents law enforcement from performing mass decryption of messages. Abrasion ensures that only large organizations like law enforcement are able to access any messages. The current abrasion construction uses public key parameters such as prime numbers which makes the abrasion scheme difficult to analyze and allows possible backdoors. In this thesis, we introduce a new abrasion construction which uses hash functions to avoid the problems …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background/Aims: Evidence suggests Medicaid beneficiaries in the USA are prescribed opioids more frequently than are people who are privately‐insured, but little is known about opioid prescribing patterns among Medicaid enrollees who gained coverage via the Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansions. This study compared the prevalence of receipt of opioid prescriptions and opioid‐use‐disorder (OUD), along with time from OUD diagnosis to medication‐assisted treatment (MAT) receipt between Oregon residents who had been continuously insured by Medicaid, were newly insured after Medicaid expansion in 2014, or returned to Medicaid coverage after expansion.

Design: Cross‐sectional study using inverse‐propensity weights to adjust for …

Customizing A Business Law Textbook At Linn-Benton Community College, Keith Tierney, Michaela Willi Hooper

Open Educational Resources Symposium

In 2017 Keith Tierney, a business law instructor at Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC), was fed up with the high cost of his commercial textbook. Not only was it upwards of $300, it wasn't customized to his learning outcomes and editions went out of date quickly. He saw the announcement for LBCC's Textbook Affordability Grant and reached out to LBCC's OER Librarian, Michaela Willi Hooper, to learn more. Michaela helped him find an existing business law OER and get it into an editable format (Microsoft Word). Keith went through training with LBCC's Center for Accessibility Resources and learned how to use …

Why Chemeketa Press Doesn't Make Oers (Mostly), Brian Mosher

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Chemeketa Press does not make its books available for free because we are pursuing a self-funding publishing model that lives somewhere between the realms of traditional publishing and OER production. We want to present our model to people interested in the OER model to show how similar goals can be achieved through different means.

Pcc's Equity And Open Education Faculty Cohort, Jen Klaudinyi May 2019

Pcc's Equity And Open Education Faculty Cohort, Jen Klaudinyi

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Learning materials used in the classroom are a social justice issue. Traditional textbooks can present barriers to students in the form of cost as well as in the narrative embedded within the content. This year PCC designed and implemented a 2-part professional development opportunity: the Open Education and Equity Faculty Cohort. We asked instructors to explore intersections between open education, culturally responsive teaching, universal design and open pedagogy and then to implement some of their learning in curriculum revision. This poster will provide an overview of the cohort design and our experience leading it.

What Can Oer Advocates Learn From The Traditional Faculty Textbook Adoption Experience?, Rick A. Stoddart May 2019

What Can Oer Advocates Learn From The Traditional Faculty Textbook Adoption Experience?, Rick A. Stoddart

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Previous research has demonstrated the positive impacts that Open Educational Resources (OER) can have on student retention and learning, but these connections may not be compelling enough to persuade faculty to adopt OER resources in lieu of traditional textbooks and materials. What are OER advocates missing? What could OER advocates do better or differently? To be successful with OER, it is important to understand not only what OER are replicating or replacing in the classroom, but also understand the whole faculty experience around textbook adoption. How do faculty hear about textbooks? How do vendors communicate to faculty? What are faculty …
