Task functional MRI (fMRI) has greatly impacted our understanding of brain functioning, enabling the identification of brain areas associated with particular tasks. Current methods of fMRI analysis only display regional differences in activation. We propose that there are also dynamic functional connectivity changes occurring between systems which support the performance of a task.
A recently developed method, termed connectotyping, is able to efficiently model functional brain connectivity and has the potential to track changes in brain dynamics in individuals. Our work aims to use connectotyping to reveal the progression of temporal brain connectivity patterns in task fMRI.

Interventions In Type 1 Diabetes: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Examining Factors That Lead To Improved Glycemic Control, Christopher E. Larsen
Interventions In Type 1 Diabetes: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Examining Factors That Lead To Improved Glycemic Control, Christopher E. Larsen
University Honors Theses
Uncontrolled type 1 diabetes puts adolescents at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, neuropathy, reduced brain mass, and reduced life expectancy among other symptoms. Clinically, behavioral interventions are staged for patients with uncontrolled type 1 diabetes. Meta-analyses of these interventions have yielded non-significant differences in overall glycemic control, and have yet to identify any significant moderators of outcomes. The goal of this study was to update and improve upon past meta-analyses, and evaluate potential moderators. 28 RCTs of behavioral interventions in type 1 diabetes evaluating glycemic control were identified. Variables within interventions were collected and reviewed systematically, separating interventions …
Politics In The San Clemente Dam Removal, Aylan Matthew Lee
Politics In The San Clemente Dam Removal, Aylan Matthew Lee
Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the role of politics in the removal of the 106-foot tall San Clemente Dam. The removal project and negotiations provide a case study of the contemporary phenomenon of dam removal. My analysis joins a growing body of social science literature on the social, political, and human dimensions of removal. The San Clemente Dam, which impounded the Carmel River near Monterey, California, was removed in 2015, the largest such project completed in California. Drawing on political ecology and science and technology studies, and using a mixed qualitative approach, I assess both the role of politics in shaping the …
Rethinking Services With Communities Of Color: Why Culturally Specific Organizations Are The Preferred Service Delivery Model, Ann Curry-Stevens, Gerald Deloney, Matt Morton
Rethinking Services With Communities Of Color: Why Culturally Specific Organizations Are The Preferred Service Delivery Model, Ann Curry-Stevens, Gerald Deloney, Matt Morton
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Racial disparities in social, education and health services continue unabated despite efforts to address them. At the margins of the service delivery system are lesser-known and minimally researched programs known as “culturally specific organizations” that have been developed by and with communities of color. These are organizations that have been developed by a specific community of color and continue to serve that same community of color. This article shares the insights of three leaders in racial equity, who have been immersed in Portland-based organizations for many years: two as organizational leaders and one as an academic research partner. The paper …

Finance is a broad and dynamic field present in all aspects of business and industries. In any organization, the highest-ranking finance position is the Chief financial officer (CFO), a strategic partner to the Chief executive officer (CEO). In this position, CFOs hold the primary responsibility of planning, managing all finance activities of a company, including business planning, budgeting, mergers and acquisitions, forecasting, and negotiations. They must also provide leadership, direction, and management of the finance and accounting divisions. As a member of the executive management team, the CFO must provide financial, operational, and strategic insight that helps frame the decisions …
Barriers To Community Gardening In Portland, Or, Jullian Michael Schrup
Barriers To Community Gardening In Portland, Or, Jullian Michael Schrup
University Honors Theses
This paper analyzes structural, social and cultural barriers to community gardening in Portland, Oregon. Both the majority of Portland's demographics and the majority of its community gardeners are white, with much of the minority populations being progressively gentrified and displaced outside of the urban center. Exasperating this displacement is Portland's uneven investment in sustainable and green infrastructure in a process currently being studied as eco-gentrification. In tandem with the eco-gentrification literature, there is growing evidence that urban agriculture and community gardens disproportionately benefit white middle-class individuals through exclusionary spaces that omit minority participation. Portland's community garden participation of black and …

Attitudes, Behavior, And Archetypes In The Clackamas River Basin: A Model Of Water Customer Analysis And Outreach For Watershed Protection And Conservation, Daniel Close Larson
Dissertations and Theses
Fresh water resources around the globe are under threat of diminishing supply and quality due to rapid population growth, climate change, drought, and waste. This dissertation aims to address the protection of fresh water at the source, the tap, and how water customer attitudes influence protection and conservation using a watershed-wide lens. Using the Clackamas River Watershed which resides within the Portland Metropolitan Area (PMA), I seek to investigate water customer attitudes towards a source water protection program and their willingness to pay to support such an endeavor, attitudes and behaviors that result in household water conservation, and an exploration …
Making Race Matter: Interrupting Racial Color-Blindness In Education Through The Implementation Of Anti-Racist Curriculum, Kelly Deits Cutler
Making Race Matter: Interrupting Racial Color-Blindness In Education Through The Implementation Of Anti-Racist Curriculum, Kelly Deits Cutler
Dissertations and Theses
The United States continues to be a highly racialized society. As a result, race remains a predictor of educational achievement for students in the PK-12 public education system. Concurrently, racial color-blindness continues to dominate educational institutions, as teachers--particularly White teachers--often feel uncomfortable and ill prepared to talk with students about race. One approach that educators have developed to combat color-blindness in schools is anti-racist curriculum. Such curriculum directly teaches students about race and intentionally interrupts the color-blind ideology.
This research study sought to understanding how teachers attending a series of collaborative professional development sessions experienced the process of designing and …

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
Legal Walls PDX charts a path toward a more inclusive atmosphere for street art, and specifically graffiti, in Portland by planning a legal graffiti wall for public expression in the Central Eastside Industrial District. This plan proposes legal routes forward, as well as recommendations for implementing, designing, and stewarding the wall. These recommendations are informed by stakeholder outreach, best practices in other cities, and key advisory interviews. The complementary zine presents the idea of a free wall through storytelling and provides an approachable version of the plan for a wider public audience.
The companion zine is available below in the …
Teacher Learning In The Context Of Students’ Mathematical Thinking, Mary Sherrett Duden
Teacher Learning In The Context Of Students’ Mathematical Thinking, Mary Sherrett Duden
Dissertations and Theses
Currently mathematics education is undergoing substantial changes so that students may experience mathematics in intellectually engaging, equitable, and relevant ways. More specifically, I am referring to a teacher stance of centering student thinking and allowing students to make sense of mathematical ideas. Proponents of reform efforts in mathematics argue that this is the path to helping elementary students develop a deep and conceptually sound understanding of mathematics. This is critical because a strong mathematical foundation has increasingly become a gateway for access to many career opportunities and citizenship in the United States.
Unfortunately, these ambitious changes present a challenge for …
Identifying With Remida: Early Childhood Educators’ Experiences With Reuse Materials In Reggio Emilia Inspired Identity Studies, Michelle Angela Domingues
Identifying With Remida: Early Childhood Educators’ Experiences With Reuse Materials In Reggio Emilia Inspired Identity Studies, Michelle Angela Domingues
Dissertations and Theses
Mainstream approaches to identity studies in early childhood education (ECE) are problematic from both social constructivist and early childhood education for sustainability perspectives. Mainstream approaches are influenced by behaviorist theories of developmental psychology literature which privilege individual identity, whereas emerging discourses in identity theory trend toward discussing the multiplicity of social identities. Alternatively, and in contrast to traditional behaviorist and cognitive learning theories, cultural centers like Reggio Emilia, Italy’s Remida Creative Recycling Center promote reuse material projects that socially construct identities in Reggio’s Municipal Infant/Toddler Centers and Preprimary Schools by giving value to waste materials through offering such materials in …
Creating A 3d Printed Bipedal Robot’S Ankle And Foot With Human-Like Motion, Tylise E. Fitzgerald
Creating A 3d Printed Bipedal Robot’S Ankle And Foot With Human-Like Motion, Tylise E. Fitzgerald
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Humanoid robots are being created to replace humans in dangerous situations, assist overworked humans, and improve our quality of life by completing chores. However, current bipedal robots haven’t matched the performance of humans and are still impractical for commercial use.
One of the Agile and Adaptive Robotics Lab’s goals is to create a humanoid robot whose anatomy is similar to the human body. If this can be accomplished, we can have a functioning model of the human body that we can adjust to improve both humanoid robots’ functions and the functionality of our own human bodies. This specific project looks …
Application Of Single Particle Electron Microscopy To Native Lens Gap Junctions And Intrinsically Disordered Signaling Complexes, Janette Bernadette Myers
Application Of Single Particle Electron Microscopy To Native Lens Gap Junctions And Intrinsically Disordered Signaling Complexes, Janette Bernadette Myers
Dissertations and Theses
Gap junctions are a class of membrane proteins that facilitate cell-to-cell communication by forming channels that directly couple the cytoplasm of neighboring cells. The channels are composed of monomers called connexins. Humans express 21 connexin isoforms in a cell-type specific fashion, and each isoform has distinct mechanisms of permeation and regulation. Co-assembly of multiple isoforms into a single intercellular channel can change channel properties, such as conductance and selectivity to substrates (e.g., ions, metabolites and signaling molecules). However, the mechanistic basis for this functional diversity has remained poorly understood. This lack of mechanistic insight has been due in large part …
Aggregation Of Electric Water Heaters For Peak Shifting And Frequency Response Services, Thomas Leighton Clarke
Aggregation Of Electric Water Heaters For Peak Shifting And Frequency Response Services, Thomas Leighton Clarke
Dissertations and Theses
The increased penetration of renewable energy sources poses new challenges for grid stability. The stochastic and uncontrollable generation of solar and wind power cannot be adjusted to match the load profile, and the transition away from traditional synchronous generators is reducing the grid capacity to arrest and recover from frequency disturbances.
Additionally, the distributed nature of many renewable energy sources makes centralized control of generation more complicated. The traditional power system paradigm balances the supply and demand of electricity on the grid by regulating generation. As this becomes more difficult, one alternative is to adjust the load instead. This is …

Evaluating Project Assessment Techniques For High-Profile Transportation Projects Development And Delivery: Case Of State Departments Of Transportation (Dots) In The United States, Rafaa Ibrahim Khalifa
Dissertations and Theses
Time delays and cost overruns in construction projects are generally due to factors such as inappropriate planning, design errors, unexpected site conditions, inadvisable tools selection, change scope, weather conditions, lack of resources, and other project changes. Time delays and cost overruns are of concern to most project managers, owners, and governments. These elements of time and cost are two of the critical defects that impact the construction project delivery. These defects can lead to project failures and to various negative issues like increasing in disagreements among the project team, the contractor, suppliers, and the owner.

Exotic Dancers Experiences With Occupational Violence In Portland, Oregon Strip Clubs, Harley J. Paulsen, Ericka Kimball
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Portland, Oregon takes the lead in the highest strip clubs per capita, however, strip clubs in Portland have gone unregulated, allowing for poor management and oversight of health and safety issues. When violence and exploitation occurs, exotic dancers have scarce resources to turn to due to the continued stigma of being a sex worker. Past research has explored limited issues related to exotic dancers, including drug use, sexually transmitted infections, and mental health problems, but few have questioned what safety measures are needed to protect women in this industry. Through a personal and intersectional lens this study explores exotic dancer’s …
A State Of Longing: Perspectives From Nagorno-Karabakh Idps, Isabelle Mcrae
A State Of Longing: Perspectives From Nagorno-Karabakh Idps, Isabelle Mcrae
University Honors Theses
Since the ceasefire in 1994, the intractable conflict of Nagorno-Karabakh continues to have a severe impact on security and development in the Caucasus region. Internally displaced Azerbaijanis (IDPs) from Nagorno-Karabakh are one of the main stakeholders in the conflict, and yet little study has addressed the impact of their symbolic values and identity issues vis-à-vis resolution efforts. Accordingly, this thesis focuses on four themes which arose in the author’s ethnographic research in Azerbaijan with internally displaced Azerbaijanis. The paper will address the group’s relation to the land, the framing of kinship and identity, relations with Armenia and the Armenian community, …

Effective omni-gravity hydroponics will allow astronauts to supplement nutrition and further close the life cycle of water in orbit, lunar, and Martian conditions. This project determines the operational limits of the test cells for the Plant Water Management Hydroponics mission. A scaled 1-g channel was designed by Rihana Mungin to mimic full-scale performance in microgravity that could be tested terrestrially. This project sought to find the limits of operation of the 1-g test cells and identify failure modes that could pose a safety risk in space. The cells were filled at increments of 20% and cycled from 0.184 to 8.33 …
Material Parameter Estimation Of Thin Wafers With Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy, Kirk R. Jungles
Material Parameter Estimation Of Thin Wafers With Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy, Kirk R. Jungles
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy(THz TDS) is a spectroscopic technique that can be implemented to perform non destructive material parameter extraction on a variety of materials. Accuracy of these material parameters is often limited by statistical variation between measurements and insufficient knowledge of the thickness of the slabs being measured.
The goal of this project was to develop an in house procedure that would allow us to perform THz TDS on thin wafers using an up to date signal processing algorithm that would provide accurate predictions for the thickness of the wafers, reliable estimations of the wafer’s material parameters, and demonstration …
Development And Validation Of The Workplace Mental Illness Stigma Scale (W-Miss), Nicholas Anthony Smith
Development And Validation Of The Workplace Mental Illness Stigma Scale (W-Miss), Nicholas Anthony Smith
Dissertations and Theses
Although 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness at some point, each year people with mental illnesses continue to face high levels of stigmatization and discrimination at work. Recognizing this, many organizational researchers and practitioners have sought to improve workplaces for employees with mental illness through a variety of organizational interventions. Unfortunately, few interventions are thoroughly evaluated. One barrier to evaluating such interventions is the lack of a theoretically meaningful measure of workplace mental illness stigma. In this dissertation, I proposed to develop and evaluate such a measure (the W-MISS) based on Jones, Farina, Hastorf, Markus, Miller, and …

Uhf And Microwave Phase-Modulated Scattering Array, Nasr Nomas Hussein Alkhafaji
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation investigates the use an array of active nonlinear elements, with particular emphasis on controlling distortion products generated by nonlinear elements in space rather than using conventional ways such as transmission lines, waveguides, and power dividers and combiners. The nonlinear elements are made of assemblies of antennas and electronic switches, called modulated scatterers (MSs). These so-called MSs elements are utilized in a wide variety of applications such as radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, microwave imaging, Internet-of-Things sensors, etc. However, no research work has been reported in the literature regarding exploiting and controlling several distortion products generated by MSs at …
Impactful Care: Addressing Social Determinants Of Health Across Health Systems, Nicole Lisa Friedman
Impactful Care: Addressing Social Determinants Of Health Across Health Systems, Nicole Lisa Friedman
Dissertations and Theses
There is emerging evidence that addressing health-related social needs through enhanced clinical-community linkages can improve health outcomes and reduce costs. Unmet health-related social needs, such as food insecurity, inadequate or unstable housing, and lack of access to transportation may increase the risk of developing chronic conditions, reduce an individual's ability to manage these conditions, increase health care costs, and lead to avoidable health care utilization. In response, work on social needs is happening across large health systems in the United States, but the pace of progress is slow and accountability is diffuse.
The goal of this applied research project is …

This study, based on in-depth interviews with 30 self-identified radical doulas working in the US, describes the radical practices, positionality, and orientation towards reproductive justice that distinguish these care workers from mainstream doulas. Radical doulas provide nonjudgmental support in a full-spectrum of reproductive experiences from menarche to menopause according to the needs of their clients. As non-medically trained care workers, they provide informational, emotional, and physical support during abortion, birth and postpartum, fetal loss, adoption, or surrogacy, enacting individualized skill sets across settings from homes to hospitals and clinics. Radical doulas are paid professionals, but often offer a sliding-scale for …
Tree Canopy Cover And Potential In Portland, Or: A Spatial Analysis Of The Urban Forest And Capacity For Growth, Jeff Ramsey
Tree Canopy Cover And Potential In Portland, Or: A Spatial Analysis Of The Urban Forest And Capacity For Growth, Jeff Ramsey
Dissertations and Theses
Urban forests have positive impacts on human and ecosystem health, reduce stress on aging stormwater infrastructure, increase property values, and reduce energy consumption. The scale of these benefits ranges from the hyper-local to the global. While the benefits of urban forests can extend well beyond the boundaries of cities, they often do not reach all residents of the city equally. Urban forest policies do not adequately address environmental equity or employ planting strategies with knowledge of the social and political factors that determine the spatial variations of tree canopy extent in cities. Chapter I analyzes the determinants of current canopy …

Dissertations and Theses
U.S. schools face a well-documented gender gap within some important educational and social indicators. In the United States, boys and young men are significantly more likely than girls and young women to be diagnosed with a learning disability, leave high school without a diploma, receive failing grades in core classes, and be suspended or expelled from school. This study uses an interpretive research framework to investigate the relationship between this gender gap in education and constructions of masculinity, social and cultural capital, agency, caring and resistance in secondary schools. Data collected through interviews with young men who engaged in acts …
Context-Aware Wi-Fi Infrastructure-Based Indoor Positioning Systems, Huy Phuong Tran
Context-Aware Wi-Fi Infrastructure-Based Indoor Positioning Systems, Huy Phuong Tran
Dissertations and Theses
Large enterprises are often interested in tracking objects and people within buildings to improve resource allocation and occupant experience. Infrastructure-based indoor positioning systems (IIPS) can provide this service at low-cost by leveraging already deployed Wi-Fi infrastructure. Typically, IIPS perform localization and tracking of devices by measuring only Wi-Fi signals at wireless access points and do not rely on inertial sensor data at mobile devices (e.g., smartphones), which would require explicit user consent and sensing capabilities of the devices.
Despite these advantages, building an economically viable cost-effective IIPS that can accurately and simultaneously track many devices over very large buildings is …

Distribution And Origin Of Carbide In Ordinary Chondrites, Karla Rae Farley
Dissertations and Theses
To understand the occurrence and distribution of carbide minerals in ordinary chondrites, thirty meteorites were examined, twenty-eight ordinary chondrites and two iron meteorites. The occurrence of carbide, textures, and chemical compositions were examined in the 7 carbide-bearing meteorites. Two formation methods for carbide have been presented in previous research. These are aqueous alteration and shock heating, and they are examined for validity in this thesis. Additionally, one other formation method for carbide formation through impact and brecciation is put forth and examined. Textural differences between the carbide-magnetite assemblages (CMAs) observed by Krot et al., (1997) and those seen in this …
Evaluating The Utility Of Theories Of Social Integration In Understanding Areal Suicide Rates In The United States, Nathan Finch Parsons
Evaluating The Utility Of Theories Of Social Integration In Understanding Areal Suicide Rates In The United States, Nathan Finch Parsons
Dissertations and Theses
Despite over a century's worth of study, areal variations in suicide rate remain largely unexplained. In order to better understand these regional differences, this analysis aggregates county-level National Center for Health Statistics Multiple Cause of Death data with data from the US Census, the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, and the Penn State Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development to test the three leading conceptualizations of social integration (i.e. demographic, compositional, ecological) against US suicide rates. Results of negative binomial regression models indicate that an ecological measure, social capital, is substantially associated with suicide rate, while demographic and …
