Time In The African Tradition, E. Kofi Agorsah
Time In The African Tradition, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
The article describes the African concept of time. The African concept of time is one that has never been properly understood by non-Africans. The reason probably lies in the fact that in Africa time becomes tied-in to activities of the season, day or night rather than in terms of a large solar clock or calendar. The African seasons are not thought of as stretching evenly, but rather are considered as periods in a chain of events one gradually culminating into another.
Responsible Education For Professional Psychology: Cultivation Of Public Interest, Richard H. Dana
Responsible Education For Professional Psychology: Cultivation Of Public Interest, Richard H. Dana
Regional Research Institute for Human Services
This paper affirms a belief that the psychology profession can still be invested with a moral quality, or public interest, expressed by responsible education. Transformation from egocentric to sociocentric practices can be fostered by values, curriculum, students, and faculty. Suggestions for program development stem from acknowledgement of desiderata for professional education in the public interest that include the humanity of students, a sense of community, power. sharing by students and faculty, integration of knowledge and practice, training for advocacy roles, and continuity of training.

After The Sixties: Anthropology In Sixth Grade Social Studies Textbooks, Christine Skei Rossi
After The Sixties: Anthropology In Sixth Grade Social Studies Textbooks, Christine Skei Rossi
Dissertations and Theses
During the 1960s, anthropology was an important part of the social studies curriculum. This study explores the question of whether twenty years later, anthropology is still an important part of primary and secondary school curricula and textbooks. To answer that question, the author used content analysis to analyze 13 sixth grade social studies textbooks for their anthropological content. Results of the research indicate that there is very little anthropology in the texts, the same topics and concepts are covered in most of them, and that most of the anthropological material is narrative or descriptive in form rather than theoretical. The …

Neutron Activation Analysis And Chemical Inference For The Identification Of Buena Vista Ceramics, Daniel D. Sullivan
Dissertations and Theses
Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis was used for this study of stonewares collected from the site of the Buena Vista/Oregon Pottery Company (1866-1890).
The results show significant chemical signatures in the samples tested. Thorium/ytterbium and thorium/chromium ratios within their respective ranges of variation demonstrate a relative conformity among all samples of Buena Vista ceramics.

Archeological Implications Of Traditional House Construction Among The Nchumuru Of Northern Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah
Archeological Implications Of Traditional House Construction Among The Nchumuru Of Northern Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Ethnographic data from the Nchumuru settlement of Wiae, Kete-Krachi District, northern Volta Region, Ghana, are used to examine the manner in which earth-walled houses in Nchumuru traditional settlements are transferred from the systemic to the archeological record. Archeological survey and excavation of two early Nchumuru sites were conducted to establish the extent to which the observed cultural and natural processes of house and settlement development could help identify the location and distribution of prehistoric structural features. The result was the almost complete reconstruction of the location and distribution of structural features at one of these sites. Knowledge of the mechanisms …

An Assessment Of A Training Program Designed To Teach Staff Nurses In An Acute Care Facility To Transfer Nursing Process Theory To Practice, C. Frances Johnson
Dissertations and Theses
A training program was developed to help registered nurses in an acute care facility to learn nursing process theory and to transfer that theory to nursing practice. A total sample of 102 newly-hired nurses who had participated in this training program were pre- and post- tested on class content; they also filled out a questionnaire which provided demographic and attitudinal data related to the use of nursing process as a model for nursing care. An audit sample of 82 nurses, who were a part of the total sample, were audited one month after the training program to collect data on …
Socialization And Ideal Expectations For The Health Professional Role In The Provision Of Quality Terminal Care For The Urban Elderly, Margaret B. Neal
Socialization And Ideal Expectations For The Health Professional Role In The Provision Of Quality Terminal Care For The Urban Elderly, Margaret B. Neal
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigates socialization and ideal expectations for the health professional role in the provision of quality terminal care. Guiding the research are role theory, socialization theory, and Talcott Parsons' (1951) pattern variables. The research was conducted in three phases. The first phase involved development of an analytical framework elaborating upon Parsons' five pattern variables, which were first conceptualized as dimensions describing the ways in which roles could vary. Specific indicators for each of the pattern variables were developed. Typologies characterizing (1) the medical, or conventional, model and (2) the holistic model (specifically, the hospice model) for the provision of …

The Effect On Culture-Bound Evaluation By The Intercultural Communication Workshop (Icw) At Portland State University, Marion Franc Sørensen
The Effect On Culture-Bound Evaluation By The Intercultural Communication Workshop (Icw) At Portland State University, Marion Franc Sørensen
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect on culture-bound evaluation by the Intercultural Communication Workshop (ICW) at Portland State University. An increase in positive evaluation of an intercultural dyad was taken to indicate a decrease in culture-bound evaluation. Methodology consisted of an adaptation of Dawes' "Direct Estimation Techniques" which was utilized in creating the testing instrument. The results are inconclusive but suggest that the ICW training may be more effective in this dimension for the American students than for International students.
