Rethinking Precolonial Plant Cultivation On The Northwest Coast Of North America, Douglas Deur Jan 2002

Rethinking Precolonial Plant Cultivation On The Northwest Coast Of North America, Douglas Deur

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast of North America are widely believed to have been true “hunter-fisher-gatherers,” lacking plant cultivation of any kind. This depiction of the region's indigenous inhabitants emerged within early colonial accounts and was perpetuated within the literatures of geography, anthropology, and archaeology. Still, there is ample evidence of plant cultivation available from archival, archaeological, and ethnographic sources. In particular, the peoples of coastal British Columbia created large gardens of edible estuarine plants, using sophisticated indigenous technologies. The oversight of these practices in written representations of the region reveals consistent patterns of bias, emanating from the …

Oh, What A Tangled Web-Site We Weave When First We Practice, Elizabeth Reynolds, James Reynolds Jan 2002

Oh, What A Tangled Web-Site We Weave When First We Practice, Elizabeth Reynolds, James Reynolds

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Current emphases on computer technology have prompted a naive desire to use whatever is new regardless of its appropriateness to educational outcomes. Use of College level Web-based instruction has unearthed a variety of problems: misapplication of software, misplaced attempts to adapt traditional instruction to the Web, lack of teacher support, access and time difficulties, financial barriers, spatial/gender differences, and counterproductive approaches to learning that are unsystematic and independent versus organized, social, and cultural. The present study examined technological barriers to college student's achievement as well as student preferences regarding an optional Web-based ancillary designed to promote student achievement in an …

Toward A Discourse Of Mestizaje: The Role Of The Patagonian Frontier In The Construction Of Argentine National Identity, Daniela V. L. Senderowicz Jun 2001

Toward A Discourse Of Mestizaje: The Role Of The Patagonian Frontier In The Construction Of Argentine National Identity, Daniela V. L. Senderowicz

Dissertations and Theses

This essay will explore the notion of mestizaje in the Republic of Argentina. Specifically, it will use the Argentine Patagonia as a point of departure for this analysis, an area in which conquest resulted in a community of mixed-race and mixed culture individuals. The juxtaposition of the struggle between white settlers and Mapuche-Tehuelche Indians of the region demonstrates a continuity in discrimination in the nation's history. For this very reason, the area represents a general pattern present throughout the country, and, hence, I use it as a prototype to draw conclusions about race relations in the nation as a whole. …

Traditional And Non-Traditional Dispute Settlement In The Federated States Of Micronesia, Kris Tina Yurgin Cummings Jun 2001

Traditional And Non-Traditional Dispute Settlement In The Federated States Of Micronesia, Kris Tina Yurgin Cummings

Dissertations and Theses

The current U.S. mediation system is founded on a paradigm of individual focus and Western values. This model may fail to represent the various cultural components disputants from more collective cultures may bring to the mediation process. In addition, the U.S. mediation system relies on the collaboration of two or more disputants to confront the issues between them. Again, this model presupposes that confrontation is an appropriate means of conflict resolution.

The purpose of this study is to offer a different perspective of dispute settlement as practiced in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Cultural values that emphasize the social …

Attitudes At The Bank : A Survey Of Reactions To Different Varieties Of English, Sean Wilcox Jan 2001

Attitudes At The Bank : A Survey Of Reactions To Different Varieties Of English, Sean Wilcox

Dissertations and Theses

In the modem world of international communication, it is more common for speakers of different varieties of English to come into contact with each other on a daily basis. This can occur not only in face to face communication, but in telephone communication as well.

This study investigates the attitudes towards a non-native or Expanding Circle (ECE) variety of English held by telephone customer service representatives at a large American financial institution. The central question of this study asks whether or not these telephone representatives will rate a speaker of a Korean-accented variety of English higher or lower than a …

The Effects Of An Outdoor School Program On 6th-Graders’ Empathy And Attitudes Towards Nature, Carolyn Ann Occhipinti Nov 2000

The Effects Of An Outdoor School Program On 6th-Graders’ Empathy And Attitudes Towards Nature, Carolyn Ann Occhipinti

Dissertations and Theses

Past research in environmental psychology and education has shown that outdoor experiences such as wilderness adventure camps and environmental education programs may result in increases in participants' self-esteem, sense of connectedness to the natural world and environmental awareness. Developmental research has suggested a link between high self-esteem and increased levels of empathy.

The present study was intended to explore possible effects of nature experiences on empathy development, and to add to our understanding of the relationship between people and the natural environment by measuring four aspects of children's subjective experiences: empathy, self-esteem, sense of connectedness to the natural world, and …

Simpson's Paradox Can Emerge From The N-Player Prisoner's Dilemma: Implications For The Evolution Of Altruistic Behavior, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Martin Zwick Jul 2000

Simpson's Paradox Can Emerge From The N-Player Prisoner's Dilemma: Implications For The Evolution Of Altruistic Behavior, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Simulations of the n-player Prisoner’s Dilemma in multiple populations reveal that Simpson’s paradox can emerge in such game-theoretic situations. The relative proportion of cooperators can decrease in each separate sub-population, while the proportion of cooperators in the total population can nonetheless increase, at least transiently. Factors that determine the longevity of this effect are under investigation. The increase of altruistic behavior exhibited in these simulations is not based on reciprocal altruism, as there are no strategies conditional on other players’ past actions, nor does it depend on kin selection via inclusive fitness, as there are no genes. This model is …

On Communicative Competence: Its Nature And Origin, Mary Lou Emerson May 2000

On Communicative Competence: Its Nature And Origin, Mary Lou Emerson

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the lineage of the term communicative competence (CC) and to provide a framework for understanding the term CC, a controversial term introduced by Hymes (1972). This pager argues that the term CC is only meaningful if it includes competence in the same sense as Chomsky (1980) defines it--underlying knowledge of the rules of language severed from ability. Although Chomsky discusses competence in terms of grammar, he suggests that there may be underlying knowledge of language use-pragmatic competence. In the end, I will attempt to demonstrate the possibility that there is a competence …

“Where Girls Will Be Boys And Boys Will Be Girls”: The Spatial Perceptions And Place-Bound Identity Of The Drag Community In Portland, Oregon, Courtney Sullivan Villegas May 2000

“Where Girls Will Be Boys And Boys Will Be Girls”: The Spatial Perceptions And Place-Bound Identity Of The Drag Community In Portland, Oregon, Courtney Sullivan Villegas

Dissertations and Theses

Space is socially and culturally constructed. As such, experiences in and perceptions of the environment vary on the basis of culture and position in society. These perceptions influence the creation of places, especially places designed to make people feel accepted and at home. The building of such places and of community networks between these places is most important among groups who find themselves outside of societal norms.

This research examines these notions of space and place through a focus on the drag community in Portland, Oregon in order to determine whether spatial perception contributes to the construction of a place-bound …

Use Of Cultural Topics In Electronic Dialogue Journals In The Foreign Language Classroom, Katya Elizabeth Monge Jacome May 2000

Use Of Cultural Topics In Electronic Dialogue Journals In The Foreign Language Classroom, Katya Elizabeth Monge Jacome

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study has been to determine what effect the difference in cultural and general topics has on the length, complexity, and quality of resulting entries in electronic dialogue journals. The data, which consisted of 132 electronic dialogue entries generated by eleven adult students in a second year university Spanish course over a period of four weeks, were measured for length, in terms of total words and total number of t-units; complexity, by dividing the total number of words by the total number of t-units; and quality, as assessed by the Jacobs profile (1981), which considers the following …

Residents Informing The Planning Process: Pleasant Valley And Its Natural Resources, Steve Olson, Ian Simpson, Jay Sugnet, Tim Williams, Alison Young Mar 2000

Residents Informing The Planning Process: Pleasant Valley And Its Natural Resources, Steve Olson, Ian Simpson, Jay Sugnet, Tim Williams, Alison Young

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

As a society, we are slowly learning the importance of the interaction between the natural and built environments. We need a new model for planning and development that gives more weight to natural resource considerations than has traditionally occurred in the development process.

An opportunity exists in Pleasant Valley to bring focus to natural resources in future planning efforts by tapping into the local knowledge of residents who know and love the land. Because the area will begin to urbanize in the near future, it is necessary to learn about the area before development occurs or people move away. The …

Tribal Constructs And Kinship Realities : Individual And Family Organization On The Grand Ronde Reservation From 1856, Aeron Teverbaugh Jan 2000

Tribal Constructs And Kinship Realities : Individual And Family Organization On The Grand Ronde Reservation From 1856, Aeron Teverbaugh

Dissertations and Theses

This project examines marriage and residence patterns on the Grand Ronde Reservation between 1856 and the early 1900s. It demonstrates that indigenous cultural patterns continued despite a colonial imagination that refused to see them. Members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde continued to live in family groups much as they had in the pre-reservation era. They continued to exhibit patterns of marriage and kinship that were described in the ethnographies and by the earliest explorers in the Oregon area.

A Comparison Of The Child Directed Speech Of Traditional Dads With That Of Stay-At-Home Dads, Judith Nancarrow Barr Jan 2000

A Comparison Of The Child Directed Speech Of Traditional Dads With That Of Stay-At-Home Dads, Judith Nancarrow Barr

Dissertations and Theses

The speech that mothers use when addressing adults has consistently been shown to exhibit modifications when the conversation partner is their language-learning child. Fathers adopt similar changes in the structural linguistic aspects of their Child Directed Speech (CDS), but their patterns of discourse remain more of a challenge for the child. This contrast in parental language is thought to be beneficial to the language-learning child: a mother's language focuses on the child as a conversation partner, whilst a father's more demanding language is considered a "Bridge" between the mother's and that of adults in the outside world. With family roles …
