This study combined the use of Loving-Kindness meditation with art therapy for three women suffering from different types of chronic pain. These women ranged in age from 26 to 62 years and were from a variety of backgrounds; two of the women were Caucasian and one woman was originally from Barbados. The participants were recruited from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Four sessions were scheduled. During each session there was time for Loving-Kindness meditation followed by an art therapy intervention. The West Haven-Yale Multidimensional Pain Inventory was used to measure pain. In order …

A Study Of Life Experiences Influencing Art Therapy As A Career Choice, Raleigh Ann Spires King May 2011

A Study Of Life Experiences Influencing Art Therapy As A Career Choice, Raleigh Ann Spires King

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

Many factors contribute to one’s decision when choosing a career. Literature has stated that personal traits and demographics, chance encounters with influential people, and significant life events play important roles in the choice to enter a career in the helping professions. This study creates a descriptive summary of the life experiences that motivate an individual to choose art therapy as a career.

Using face-to-face interviews, the researcher gathered information regarding career choice from six art therapists each of whom had five or more years of experience. Although the art therapists disclosed personal experiences, unique to their lives, similar topics emerged …

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this case study was to utilize art therapy as a means of increasing coping skills and decreasing feelings of loneliness in children whose parents are substance addicted. The subjects consisted of two African American males, ages five and six, both of whom have parents with a history of substance abuse. The Person-in-the-Rain Drawing technique was utilized to measure coping skills before and after the art therapy intervention took place. The Children’s Loneliness Questionnaire was utilized to measure the children’s feelings of loneliness both before and after the intervention as well. It was hypothesized that after six sessions …

Uptake Of Nanoparticles Of Cerium Oxide And Yttrium Oxide By Acanthamoeba Castellanii (Protozoa) And Daphnia Magna (Crustacea), James R. Palmieri, Geneva Gehring, Catherine Minichino, Shaadi F. Elswaifi Apr 2011

Uptake Of Nanoparticles Of Cerium Oxide And Yttrium Oxide By Acanthamoeba Castellanii (Protozoa) And Daphnia Magna (Crustacea), James R. Palmieri, Geneva Gehring, Catherine Minichino, Shaadi F. Elswaifi

Virginia Journal of Science

Currently, nanoparticles are synthesized and used at an unprecedented rate for industrial, medical, and research applications. The use of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeONP) and yttrium oxide nanoparticles (YtONP) results in their spread as contaminants into the environment. Once in the environment, CeONP and YtONP can be taken up by organisms in the food chain where they may pose a public health risk. In this study we determine whether Acanthamoeba castellanii and Daphnia magna uptake CeONP or YtONP from their environment and thereby play a role in the transmission of the nanoparticles. Using electron microscopy, orgranisms exposed to the nanoparticles were …

The 'Metalanguage' Of Race And The (Post) 9/11 Moment: Words Never Said, Trimiko Melancon Apr 2011

The 'Metalanguage' Of Race And The (Post) 9/11 Moment: Words Never Said, Trimiko Melancon

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Drawing upon "Mission Accomplished," a commemorative commercial, and Lupe Fiasco’s song and music video "Words I Never Said," this article examines the degree to which these particular texts serve as narratives that speak to the "metalanguage" of race and racialized enactments, especially as these relate to U.S. racial/ethnic/national identity, in (post) 9/11 cultural productions. While each of these texts toys with race, providing a context in which to interrogate (post) 9/11 sensibilities, their engagements of race and racial politics are varied. Read collectively, they illuminate the ways race, its politics, and racial representations in a (post) 9/11 moment are interpolated …

Review Of Panulirus Argus Virus 1-- A Decade After Its Discovery, Donald C. Behringer Jr., Mark J. Butler Iv, Jeffrey D. Shields, Jessica Moss Apr 2011

Review Of Panulirus Argus Virus 1-- A Decade After Its Discovery, Donald C. Behringer Jr., Mark J. Butler Iv, Jeffrey D. Shields, Jessica Moss

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In 2000, a pathogenic virus was discovered in juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys, USA. Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) is the first naturally occurring pathogenic virus reported from lobsters, and it profoundly affects their ecology and physiology. PaV1 is widespread in the Caribbean with infections reported in Florida (USA), St. Croix, St. Kitts, Yucatan (Mexico), Belize, and Cuba. It is most prevalent and nearly always lethal in the smallest juvenile lobsters, but this declines with increasing lobster size; adults harbor the virus, but do not present the characteristic signs of the disease. No other PaV1 …

Preliminary Analysis Of An Agent-Based Model For A Tick-Borne Disease, Holly Gaff Apr 2011

Preliminary Analysis Of An Agent-Based Model For A Tick-Borne Disease, Holly Gaff

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Ticks have a unique life history including a distinct set of life stages and a single blood meal per life stage. This makes tick-host interactions more complex from a mathematical perspective. In addition, any model of these interactions must involve a significant degree of stochasticity on the individual tick level. In an attempt to quantify these relationships, I have developed an individual-based model of the interactions between ticks and their hosts as well as the transmission of tick-borne disease between the two populations. The results from this model are compared with those from previously published differential equation based population models. …

Passages To Immortality: Arakawa And Gins, Stiegler, And September 11, Daniel Ross Apr 2011

Passages To Immortality: Arakawa And Gins, Stiegler, And September 11, Daniel Ross

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Via what matrix should the significance of September 11 be grasped? In 1994 Arakawa and Gins launched a form of thought that began by asking who or what you would be if you were parted from the ledge of a New York skyscraper. In the same year Stiegler commenced his own project, according to which the question of the "human" is the question of the articulation of the who with the what, a question which necessarily passes through a consideration of memory, and of mnemo-technical systems. This paper proposes to read Arakawa and Gins, and Stiegler, through the prism …

A Confusion Of Tongues, David Simpson Apr 2011

A Confusion Of Tongues, David Simpson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Don DeLillo's 'Falling Man' alludes with subtle indirection to the Babel myth, without endorsing a crude reading of the fall of the towers as justifiable punishment. The apparent chronology of the biblical myth itself, with its strong distinction between before and after the building and abandoning of the towers, is already scrambled by repetitions and prefigurings in the Authorized Version (King James) narrative. DeLillo also suggests that linguistic coherence was absent before 9/11, so that what has happened since is coherent with what came before. Often, the protagonists' comments cannot be clearly defined as before or after 9/11. Names are …

The Tragic Mulatto Revisited: Post 9/11 Pakistani-American Identities In H. M. Naqvi’S Home Boy And Mohsin Hamid’S The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Bidhan Chandra Roy Apr 2011

The Tragic Mulatto Revisited: Post 9/11 Pakistani-American Identities In H. M. Naqvi’S Home Boy And Mohsin Hamid’S The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Bidhan Chandra Roy

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

South Asian diasporic fiction has been widely celebrated for its representation of culturally hybrid characters that challenge fixed conceptions of ethnic and racial identity. Two recent novels by Pakistani diasporic writers, however, expose the political limits of discourses of cultural hybridity following the events of 9/11. This paper explores 9/11 as a seminal event in the representation of South Asian diasporic identity in H. M. Naqvi’s Home Boy and Moshin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist. It proposes that following 9/11 the marginality of Pakistani diasporic identity is more profitably read in light of a precursor to the hybrid - the …

Evaluation Of A Novel Non-Penetrating Electrode For Use In Dna Vaccination, Amy Donate, Domenico Coppola, Yolmari Cruz, Richard Heller Apr 2011

Evaluation Of A Novel Non-Penetrating Electrode For Use In Dna Vaccination, Amy Donate, Domenico Coppola, Yolmari Cruz, Richard Heller

Bioelectrics Publications

Current progress in the development of vaccines has decreased the incidence of fatal and non-fatal infections and increased longevity. However, new technologies need to be developed to combat an emerging generation of infectious diseases. DNA vaccination has been demonstrated to have great potential for use with a wide variety of diseases. Alone, this technology does not generate a significant immune response for vaccination, but combined with delivery by electroporation (EP), can enhance plasmid expression and immunity. Most EP systems, while effective, can be invasive and painful making them less desirable for use in vaccination. Our lab recently developed a non-invasive …

A Three Dimensional Green's Function Solution Technique For The Transport Of Heavy Ions In Laboratory And Space, Candice Rockell Gerstner Apr 2011

A Three Dimensional Green's Function Solution Technique For The Transport Of Heavy Ions In Laboratory And Space, Candice Rockell Gerstner

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In the future, astronauts will be sent into space for longer durations of time compared to previous missions. The increased risk of exposure to ionizing radiation, such as Galactic Cosmic Rays and Solar Particle Events, is of great concern. Consequently, steps must be taken to ensure astronaut safety by providing adequate shielding. The shielding and exposure of space travelers is controlled by the transport properties of the radiation through the spacecraft, its onboard systems and the bodies of the individuals themselves. Meeting the challenge of future space programs will therefore require accurate and efficient methods for performing radiation transport calculations …
