Communication During Perimmigration: A Life-Line Interview Method Study, Giada Roberta Rossi
Communication During Perimmigration: A Life-Line Interview Method Study, Giada Roberta Rossi
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
This thesis examines the communication challenges faced by migrants and their impact on acculturation using a new approach. The study analyzed autobiographical memories of immigrants’ communication to explore both positive and negative experiences over time. The study extends previous intercultural communication research by using the Life-Line Interview Method (LIM) (Assink & Schroots, 2010) to collect autobiographical narratives from twelve participants about their communication journeys. The findings reveal consistencies with past intercultural communication research insofar as uncertainty and identity problems were pervasive, but also positively extends past research arguing that supportive environments, characterized by culturally responsive educators and peer networks, play …
Investigating Gender Differences In Intimate Partner Violence Using Gendered General Strain Theory, Stephanie Victoria Dragon
Investigating Gender Differences In Intimate Partner Violence Using Gendered General Strain Theory, Stephanie Victoria Dragon
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health concern impacting communities and criminal justice systems. Nationwide IPV prevention and reduction policies were emphasized in the media during the aftermath of COVID-19 specifically regarding the identification of IPV offending behaviors through law enforcement screening tools. Research on IPV offending has clearly established a link in offenders exerting methods of power and control to harm an intimate partner through verbal abuse, coercion, sexual violence, and physical violence. Further, research also identified significant disproportional experiences of lethality in female victims at the hands of an intimate partner. However, criminological theories outside of control-based …

Development Of Paper-Based Electrodes For Electrochemical Detection Of Prostate Cancer Related Micrornas, Alexander Hunt
Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Prostate cancer is a prevalent malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men globally. The early detection and monitoring of prostate cancer are crucial for improving patient outcomes and reducing unnecessary treatments. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood testing and biopsies, are invasive, costly, and can lead to overdiagnosis. Additionally, PSA tests often yield false positives or negatives, and biopsies carry significant side-effects and discomforts. Therefore, there is a pressing need for novel, non-invasive diagnostic approaches. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as promising biomarkers for prostate cancer due to their dysregulation in malignant cells …
Compulsory Sterilisation And Reproductive Injustice In India: The Global Impact Of The American Eugenics Movement, Marina Cortez
Compulsory Sterilisation And Reproductive Injustice In India: The Global Impact Of The American Eugenics Movement, Marina Cortez
Institute for the Humanities Theses
On 8 November 2014, Dr RK Gupta performed eighty-three tubal ligations at a makeshift clinic in Bilaspur, India — thirteen of which resulted in death. The women, most of whom belonged to the Dalit or “untouchable” caste, were recruited by family planning agencies, lured in by cash incentives or other gifts in exchange for sterilisation. Sadly, however, the Bilaspur tragedy does not exist in isolation — but rather belongs to an extensive history of government-sponsored abuse, the majority of which has been directly led by white, Western powers. Funded by the New York-based Population Council, India was one of the …

School Librarians Transferring What They Learned In Their Preparation Programs To Practice: Three Case Studies, Carl Adrian Harvey Ii
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
ALA/AASL/CAEP standards are used to determine what preservice school librarians in nationally recognized programs are taught in their preparation programs. School librarian preparation programs follow standards to ensure their graduates are prepared and ready for their positions. The standards provide consistency in how school librarians are prepared across the country as preparation programs must provide data to demonstrate how their students have met those standards for national recognition. However, once the students complete the program and move on to their positions in K-12 schools, what happens? Do students transfer what they have learned in their preparation programs? What challenges or …

Low Dissolved Oxygen Operation Enhances Biological Phosphorus Removal In Wastewater Treatment, Haley Morgan
Low Dissolved Oxygen Operation Enhances Biological Phosphorus Removal In Wastewater Treatment, Haley Morgan
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Biological phosphorus (bio-P) removal occurs when bacteria are exposed to anaerobic/aerobic conditions that stimulate polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) to uptake phosphorus. In most treatment plants, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in the aeration tanks are commonly at or above 2.0 mg O2/L, which is often referred to as the most optimal aeration condition for bio-P. If bio-P can happen efficiently at lower DO (< 0.3 mg O2/L), then the energy demand of aeration can be decreased appreciably. This research was conducted in a biological nutrient removal (BNR) pilot plant to assess the performance of bio-P at progressively lower DO operation. This …

A Formal Simulation Model For Discrete Rate Simulation, Thomas J. Tracey
A Formal Simulation Model For Discrete Rate Simulation, Thomas J. Tracey
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Simulation is an essential tool for virtualizing systems by creating a representative model of real or hypothetical systems and observing how they change over time. Two predominant simulation paradigms include Discrete Event Simulation (DES) and Continuous Simulation, which both have their strengths and weaknesses. DES does not handle continuous state variables, while continuous simulation handles continuous state variables but encounters errors where these variables have discrete changes in their behavior. This difficulty between the two predominant simulation paradigms prompted the creation of a new simulation paradigm to cover this gap: Discrete Rate Simulation (DRS). DRS as a simulation paradigm focuses …

Modeling The Impact Of Nato Policy Actions On Taliban Disinformation Campaigns With Lotka-Volterra Models, Timothy Tarter, Bella Santos
Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)
In this paper, we use an adaptation of the Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey framework (via Affilit Et. Al.) to model the relationship between Taliban disinformation campaigns and NATO’s attempts to counter them. We find that aggression is a significantly preferred strategy over stagnation; this result should prompt decisionmakers to take strong stances against disinformation campaigns while maintaining a healthy defense against retribution. This leads us to propose the NATO Afghan Youth for Change program, which provides scholarships to individuals throughout the Afghan diaspora to become NATO influencers - a role which will both advance their personal goals and mitigate the spread of …

Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)
Future military operations will rely upon a coalition partnership’s ability to conduct regional and global operations across all domains. Currently the US has the most robust multi-domain skill sets of any existing military force, but the US cannot be solely responsible for operations around the globe. To do so would be geopolitically and economically infeasible. An answer may be to build cohesive coalition force units capable of combining localized capabilities and specialized US global competencies. The ability to respond to any type of threat through the synergy of coalition strengths will act to deter regional threats throughout the cooperation, competition, …
