Assessing The Impact Of Maternal Oral Health On The Risk Of Adverse Birth Outcomes, May Amr Salama
Assessing The Impact Of Maternal Oral Health On The Risk Of Adverse Birth Outcomes, May Amr Salama
Health Services Research Dissertations
Preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW) are leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Maternal periodontal disease (PD) has been increasingly linked to these adverse birth outcomes (ABOs), yet questions about causality and treatment effectiveness persist due to study design heterogeneity and potential unmeasured confounding. These gaps hinder the development of clear clinical and public health guidelines. This dissertation addresses these gaps through three interconnected studies assessing the relationship between maternal oral health and ABOs.
The first study employed a meta-epidemiological analysis of 62 original studies from nine systematic reviews to evaluate the impact of unmeasured confounding on …
Graduate Physical Therapy Students Perceived Benefit Of Prior Anatomy Experiences Following Their First Semester Graduate Physical Therapy Anatomy Course, Austin Alexander
Graduate Physical Therapy Students Perceived Benefit Of Prior Anatomy Experiences Following Their First Semester Graduate Physical Therapy Anatomy Course, Austin Alexander
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Human anatomy stands as a cornerstone prerequisite for admission into graduate-level Physical Therapy Programs. As such, prior anatomy experiences need to prepare students for success in graduate-level coursework. However, studies have demonstrated that undergraduate anatomy courses vary in their ability to predict success in graduate Physical Therapy anatomy coursework. This research aimed to utilize students' perceptions of their undergraduate anatomy experiences to predict grades in graduate-level Physical Therapy anatomy coursework. The multinomial logistic regression in this study revealed that the absence of perceived preparedness was a significant predictor of membership in the C graduate anatomy grade group. Students who did …
Terrestrial And Lacustrine Organic Matter Biomolecular Transformations Via Thermal Maturation And Oxidative Degradation, Louis Connor Bondurant
Terrestrial And Lacustrine Organic Matter Biomolecular Transformations Via Thermal Maturation And Oxidative Degradation, Louis Connor Bondurant
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The most abundant source of fossil fuel-forming kerogen on Earth is classified as Type II kerogen, believed to originate from marine biomass. However, a significant amount of lacustrine and terrigenous carbon is transported to the ocean through fluvial discharge. Less than half of the exported organic carbon is observed in coastal regions and the open ocean. There is a great need for an explanation of what is happening to this organic carbon during transport and deposition. Traditionally, the marine organic matter in coastal regions accumulates to eventually be buried and transformed into petroleum over millions of years due to its …
Exploring Bonding Through Outdoor Recreation In Foster Care Utilizing Attachment Theory, Casandra L. Barnes
Exploring Bonding Through Outdoor Recreation In Foster Care Utilizing Attachment Theory, Casandra L. Barnes
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
As of 2024, there are over 328,000 children in foster care in the United States (AFCARS, 2024), many of whom experience disrupted attachments and trauma that hinder their ability to form healthy relationships. Drawing from attachment theory, this study explores how outdoor recreational activities can facilitate bonding between foster parents and their foster children. Using a mixed method approach this explorative research project consisted of two phases: a pilot study at the Virginia zoo involving foster families participating in a cooperative outdoor activity and completing post event surveys, and semi-structured interviews with foster parents to examine lived experiences of bonding …

Bridging The Gap Between Counselor Education And Trauma Treatment In Practice: A Phenomenology Of Trauma-Specialized Counselors, Ariel Hutcheon
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Trauma impacts the life experiences of a sizable portion of the population. Given that so many clients bring trauma into counseling, even when not the presenting issue, knowledge of trauma’s impact and proficiency with trauma treatment are essential topics in counselor education. This study gave voice to counselors in the field to share what they have found effective from working with clients with trauma. The researcher used a phenomenological approach and interviewed six self-identified trauma-specialized counselors who have practiced for five years or longer. The data was explicated, and four major themes were identified. The first theme was Inadequate Training: …
Exploring Student Confidence And Calibration Accuracy In College Algebra: A Mixed-Methods Explanatory Sequential Study, Courtney T. Hill
Exploring Student Confidence And Calibration Accuracy In College Algebra: A Mixed-Methods Explanatory Sequential Study, Courtney T. Hill
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Calibration, or students’ ability to predict and postdict their performance on an academic task, has important implications for academic performance. It can influence students' decision making processes concerning learning activities, as well as their levels of motivation and self-regulation (Kolovelonis, 2023). The literature on calibration is clear, often indicating that students are not great at these judgements (Lin et. al, 2001). While this phenomenon is well documented, it is not an easy one to explain. Therefore, a two-phase explanatory-sequential mixed method design was used to examine undergraduate students’ calibration judgements on a college algebra exam. To further contribute to the …

Large Language Models (Llms) For Clinical Note Generation: International Classification Of Disease (Icd) Code, Knowledge Graph (Kg) And Prompt Evaluation, Ivan P. Makohon
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
In the past decade, a surge in the amount of electronic health record (EHR) data in the United States occurred, driven by a favorable policy environment created by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 and the 21st Century Cures Act of 2016. Clinical notes for patients’ assessments, diagnoses, and treatments are captured in these EHRs in free-form text by physicians, who spend a considerable amount of time entering them. Manually writing these notes is time-consuming, increasing patient waiting times and potentially delaying diagnoses. Large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-4o, possess the ability …

Comparative Analysis Of Emergent Behaviors Of Three Drone Swarm System Models For Targeting Using Agent-Based Modeling And Simulation, Arsenio T. Gumahad Ii
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation introduces a novel computational simulation framework for evaluating the emergent behaviors of three swarm drone models using Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS). The three swarm models are a Leader-Follower swarm model based on Bruckstein's antline theory, a Flocking model based on a simplified Reynolds 'Boids’ model, and a Stigmergic model with pheromone-based coordination. The primary objective of the simulation is to evaluate the performance of these models in delivering a user-defined number of drones of each type to a target area of interest in four separate scenarios, resulting in 50,000 separate simulation trials. Each scenario was structured to …
Understanding Executive Order 13583’S Impact To Federal Workforce Diversity & Employee Perception Of Federal Policies And Programs, Michael Robert Arenella
Understanding Executive Order 13583’S Impact To Federal Workforce Diversity & Employee Perception Of Federal Policies And Programs, Michael Robert Arenella
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
Creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DE&I) workforce produces beneficial organizational outcomes, such as decreased turnover, improved creativity and innovation, and improved organizational performance (Diaz-Garcia et al., 2013; Gomez & Bernet, 2019; McLeod et al., 1996; Singh & Selvarjan, 2013). While the private sector has placed much emphasis on improving DE&I in their hiring practices, whether the federal government has achieved comparable outcomes remains unclear. Guided by the punctuated equilibrium theory (PET), this dissertation examines the impact of Executive Order 13583 on both change in workforce composition, and employee sentiment towards diversity policies and programs.

Component Model Development Of Heat Exchangers, Expanders, And Control Valves For Autonomous Cryogenics Plant Cool-Down, William Harris Buhrig Iv
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The traditional method of cryogenic plant cool-down involves having continuous on-call staff to head into the office at any time to modify the existing multi-layered PID control systems if the on-call staff member detects a significant deviation from the cool-down plan. This thesis aims to outline an effective method for modeling the structure of systems with performance characteristics that deviate from design requirements and from ideal inlet-outlet correspondence, enabling the adjustment and modification of existing control structures across all Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) cryogenic refrigeration plants. Analytical Modeling and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) are applied to model the …
Mitochondria-Mediated Epigenetic Transfer Between Chondrosarcoma And Wild-Type Cells, Caleb C. J. Wyckoff
Mitochondria-Mediated Epigenetic Transfer Between Chondrosarcoma And Wild-Type Cells, Caleb C. J. Wyckoff
Biomedical Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Glioblastoma (GB), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), cholangiocarcinoma, and chondrosarcoma (CS) cancers all contain mutations in the gene isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2). The mutant IDH2 enzyme exhibits transformation of alpha-ketoglutarate (αKG) into the oncometabolite D-2-hydroxyglutarate (D2HG) in the mitochondria of these cancers. Mitochondrial-mediated transfer between cancer cells and recipient cells is a significant event that impacts the physiology of the receiving cell, specifically the epigenetic landscape. Previous experiments indicating increased DNA methylation in mesenchymal stem cells exposed to IDH1 or IDH2 conditioned medium underscore the potential role of D2HG to alter methylation states. Additionally, the presence of …
Attributes Of Artificial Wetlands Colonized By Ambystoma Maculatum On A Virginia Surface Mine, Hunter Hill, Garrett Stiltner, Walter H. Smith
Attributes Of Artificial Wetlands Colonized By Ambystoma Maculatum On A Virginia Surface Mine, Hunter Hill, Garrett Stiltner, Walter H. Smith
Virginia Journal of Science
Landscapes impacted by surface mineral extraction present a range of artificial wetland habitats potentially useable by pool-breeding amphibians, although little information exists in the literature detailing which attributes influence breeding site selection by wetland amphibian specialists in post-mined landscapes. We compared attributes of artificial wetlands consistently used and unused as oviposition sites by Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) over a six-year period on a 120-ha former surface mine in Wise County, Virginia, USA. Salamanders non-randomly selected wetlands as oviposition sites, with one-third of available wetlands within the study area showing evidence of ovipositioning. Wetlands used as breeding sites were …

Sociohydrodynamics: Data-Driven Modeling Of Social Behavior, Daniel S. Seara, Jonathan Colen, Michel Fruchart, Yael Avni, David G. Martin, Vincenzo Vitelli
Data Science Faculty Publications
Living systems display complex behaviors driven by physical forces as well as decision-making. Hydrodynamic theories hold promise for simplified universal descriptions of socially generated collective behaviors. However, the construction of such theories is often divorced from the data they should describe. Here, we develop and apply a data-driven pipeline that links micromotives to macrobehavior by augmenting hydrodynamics with individual preferences that guide motion. We illustrate this pipeline on a case study of residential dynamics in the United States, for which census and sociological data are available. Guided by Census data, sociological surveys, and neural network analysis, we systematically assess standard …

Nadph Oxidase Isoforms (Nox-2 And Nox-4) In Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury: Platelet Rich Plasma (Prp) As A Therapeutic Agent, Barbara Y. Hargrave, Frank Lattanzio
Cardiovascular Research Symposium
Introduction: Blood flow restoration to ischemic cardiac tissue is a critical and necessary intervention that has an associated downside: reperfusion injury. Reperfusion injury is a complicated process mediated in part by a pathological increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although extremely elevated levels of ROS can cause cell damage, a minimum level of ROS is necessary for activation of Hydroxylated-HIF-1a (HIF-1a) and inhibition of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-alpha (PPARa) during myocardial ischemic reperfusion injury (MIRI). MIRI clinical manifestations include arrhythmias, myocardial stunning, decreased ventricular contractility and no-reflow. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has improved left ventricular (LV) function after MIRI in …

Clonal Hematopoiesis And Thromboembolic Diseases: A Review, Jaekeun Jung, Jee Hyuk Byun, Janghee Woo
Cardiovascular Research Symposium
Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) has been identified as a novel risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, primarily mediated by CHIP-induced systemic inflammation. Emerging evidence suggests that CHIP may also contribute to the risk of thromboembolic diseases. This review highlights recent findings on the impact of CHIP on various thromboembolic conditions, such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, and ischemic stroke. Studies have demonstrated an association between CHIP and an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension and ischemic stroke. CHIP-induced systemic inflammation may amplify vascular endothelial damage and complement cascade …

Empowering The User Through Inclusive Technical Writing, Robert Enriquez
Empowering The User Through Inclusive Technical Writing, Robert Enriquez
English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the issues in technical writing due to a disconnect between writer and reader/user. I am basing this study on my real-life job. I am a manager at a well-known sneaker retailer. In August 2024, there was a Workforce Management (WFM) software that the sneaker retailer launched in the retail stores. The WFM itself was glitched and unfinished. Not much disclaimer, training or preparation was given other than these procedural documents the sneaker retailer gave. If all the store managers had to depend on was technical documentation to prepare for this already glitched WFM, then I argue there …
Reproductive Redlining: Unraveling Historical Disparities And Facility Placement In Distance To Licensed Childcare Facilities, Reproductive Health Clinics, & Crisis Pregnancy Centers For Women In The Southern Region Of The United States, Mackenzie A. Kibler
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigates how historical and structural inequalities shape contemporary access to reproductive health services, licensed childcare facilities, and crisis pregnancy centers across Mississippi, Virginia, and Maryland. Using feminist geography, reproductive justice theory, and historical trauma theory, this research develops the concept of reproductive redlining to explore how race, policy, and space intersect to produce health disparities. By combining GIS mapping with multivariate statistical analysis and redlining data from the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC), the study evaluates spatial distributions and demographic correlates of facility access before and after the Dobbs decision. Findings reveal enduring spatial inequities that disproportionately impact …
Effect Of Moderate Decrease In Contractility On Epithelial Cell-Cell Contacts Under External Stretch, Saika Sharmin
Effect Of Moderate Decrease In Contractility On Epithelial Cell-Cell Contacts Under External Stretch, Saika Sharmin
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Epithelial tissues are characterized by extensive cell–cell contacts and often subject to stretch during normal function. Cell-cell contact adhesion strength maintains mechanical continuity from cell to cell. Mechanical forces exerted by cells via actomyosin contractility are known to strengthen cell-cell adhesions to a certain extent. While it is known that a large decrease in contractility causes cell-cell contact rupture due to weakened adhesions, it is unclear how a moderate reduction in contractility affects cell-cell junction stability. Here, we studied how a moderate inhibition of non-muscle myosin II (NMII) affects the integrity of epithelial cell-cell contacts, especially when subject to the …
'Managed Hearts’ In Helper-Education: Gender Non-Binary Helper-Educators’ Experiences Of Emotional Labor, Jordan Pearce
'Managed Hearts’ In Helper-Education: Gender Non-Binary Helper-Educators’ Experiences Of Emotional Labor, Jordan Pearce
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
The unique experiences of people who identify with a gender beyond the binary paradigm dominant in the Global West are not well understood. The literature provides little insight into the experiences and perspectives of these individuals in a variety of contexts, including in their workplaces. As various social movements collide, they bring amplified attention to the mental health of marginalized communities and to workers, as well as the dynamics of modern work environments, and the specific needs of certain individuals doing certain types of work. The current study explored the experiences of gender non-binary individuals (GNI) working as helper-educators engaged …
Two Essays On The Role Of Anthropomorphism In Consumer Behavior, Faegheh (Faa) Taheran
Two Essays On The Role Of Anthropomorphism In Consumer Behavior, Faegheh (Faa) Taheran
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
The first essay of this dissertation investigates the contradictory findings on the relationship between anthropomorphism and self-control by focusing on how everyday anthropomorphized objects, rather than the products being used for consumption, influence consumer behavior. While previous studies have shown that using anthropomorphized products may decrease consumers’ self-control, this paper examines how unrelated [to consumption] anthropomorphized objects in a consumer’s environment—such as a water bottle with a humanlike face—can evoke a sense of social presence, increasing consumers’ perceptions that they are being negatively evaluated. Drawing on mind perception theory, I propose that this fear of negative evaluation can enhance self-control. …

BACKGROUND: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (“e-cigarettes”) are the nicotine product most commonly used by adolescents. Research, treatment, and policy could benefit from measures of adolescent e-cigarette beliefs about outcomes of use (ie, expectancies). In the current study, we developed and tested an adolescent electronic nicotine vaping expectancy measure.
METHODS: A focus group with adolescents evaluated potential e-cigarette expectancy items. A panel of national experts assisted in revision of these items. Finally, items were administered to a sample of adolescents 14-17 years old (N = 267, Mean age 15.6, SD = 1.1, 50.9% Female, 50.2% Non-Hispanic White, 22.5% Non-Hispanic Black, 14.2% …

The Inside Scoop: Elucidating The Three-Way Relationship Between Schistosoma Mansoni, The Gut, And Vaccines, Mariam A. Mhanna
Biomedical Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that affects over 250 million people worldwide. This blood fluke infection burdens communities and areas with limited to no access to clean fresh water. When a host is exposed to cercariae, the infectious agent, in a body of water, it matures in the host’s circulation into adult female and male worms. Copulated adult worms migrate to the mesentery, in the case of Schistosoma mansoni, and produce eggs that can cross the intestinal barrier and get excreted in the feces to continue the lifecycle. The effects of S. mansoni infection on the host …

Effects Of Sediment Composition On Spartina Alterniflora And Juncus Roemerianus Productivity In Coastal Virginia: A Thin-Layer Sediment Placement Experiment, Caitlin Hemphill
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Climate change poses a major threat to the health of estuaries and their coastal wetland systems. The Chesapeake Bay’s coastal salt marshes are at high risk of inundation due to sea-level rise and land subsidence. Restoration techniques for maintaining coastal marsh resistance to sea-level rise are being developed and refined, with thin layer placement (TLP) emerging as a feasible solution in many areas of the United States. Despite TLPs use across the country, additional research is needed on species-specific responses, sediment types, and geographically focused studies in the lower Chesapeake Bay. My research addresses these gaps by combining both greenhouse …

Computational Modeling For Automatic Superconducting Cavity Fault Prediction And Classification Using Time Series Signals, Md Monibor Rahman
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Processing multivariate time series signals collected from sensor networks is challenging because of complex temporal dependencies and non-stationarity. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) like machine learning and deep learning, it has become possible to process sensor-driven time series data more effectively than traditional statistical methods.
This dissertation aims to develop machine learning and deep learning models to address machine fault diagnosis using multivariate time series signals collected from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. The first goal of the proposed work is to develop deep learning–based classification models and an unsupervised fault clustering approach …
“We Are Trans, But We’Re Not Transitional”: Exploring Safety, Place, And Space In The Lives Of Transgender Individuals In Southeastern Virginia, Susana Avalos
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
In general, little research exists on trans people’s spatial experiences despite space being highly relevant to their experiences of violence and perceptions of safety. To date, two criminological studies have examined LGBTQ people’s fear of crime in relation to public or private places and spaces. This is in stark contrast to the sizable place and space literature on cisgender men and women. These topics from the perspectives of trans people are underexplored primarily because most criminological research has historically upheld binarized understandings of gender. Safety should not be privileged or limited to certain groups, individuals, or spaces. Instead, safety should …
