Comparison Of The Belgrad Skin Suit To A Conventional Race Suit In The Swimming Speed Of Females, Mary Lucinda Fleet

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of the Belgrad skin suit with a conventional racing suit upon swimming speed in the 25 yard front crawl stroke. Testing involved 30 female subjects, fifteen each of competitive and non-competitive swimmers. The experiment involved both groups being tested twice under four conditions, for a total of eight trials: (1) a conventional suit alone; (2) a conventional suit with an orange juice placebo, suggested to be a supplement energy producer; (3) a Belgrad skin suit alone; and (4) the Belgrad skin suit with the orange juice placebo. A two-factor mixed …

The Elements Of Mathematics Program: How Can It Be Evaluated?, Marilou Shames Giacofci

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The Central Midwest Educational Research's (CEMREL) Elements of Mathematics Program (EM) for gifted students was piloted in Tidewater for five years. Before deciding whether to continue or expand the program, it was necessary to devise a method of evaluating the program's effectiveness. In the process of this evaluation, two separate comparisons were made:

- a lateral comparison between an experimental and an existing control class over a period of four years, and

- a longitudinal comparison of successive experimental classes over a four year period.

Lateral Study

To insure comparability between the experimental and control classes, both were administered the …

Mob Violence In Prerevolutionary Norfolk, Virginia, Edward A. Smyth Apr 1975

Mob Violence In Prerevolutionary Norfolk, Virginia, Edward A. Smyth

History Theses & Dissertations

This study examines mob violence in pre-Revolutionary Norfolk, Virginia. Four chronologically distinct mob incidents are considered: the Arundel riot of 1762, the Stamp Act riot of 1766, the impressment riot of 1767, and the smallpox riots of 1768-1769. Emphasis is placed on the identification of mob participants and the motives for their involvement. Quantitative methods are used to assess the degree of participation by influential Norfolk residents in mass violence.

Statistical evidence reveals that an unusually large number of rioters were influential Norfolkians. Motivation for their participation is attributed to English Parliamentary decrees and the growing economic and political influence …

Temperature Dependent Behavior In Goldfish: (Carassius Auratus): Some Implications For Memory Processes, Jean M. Hamberg Oct 1974

Temperature Dependent Behavior In Goldfish: (Carassius Auratus): Some Implications For Memory Processes, Jean M. Hamberg

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Goldfish maintained in water temperatures of 18°C or 31°C received active avoidance training in a shuttlebox. Subjects housed in warm water acquired the response more quickly than those in cold water. A photophobic response in warm water may have affected acquisition rates. Subjects were tested for retention of the avoidance response after 10 minutes, 2.5 hours, 24 hours, or 72 hours. No significant evidence of the Kamin effect was found. A second study investigated shock threshold levels as a function of temperature levels. Cold water was found to lower the threshold level at which a motor reaction to electric shock …

The Effect Of Various Doses Of Caffeine Upon The Maximal Muscular Endurance Of College Females, Roberta Jane Perkins Jul 1974

The Effect Of Various Doses Of Caffeine Upon The Maximal Muscular Endurance Of College Females, Roberta Jane Perkins

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

A limited number of investigations dealing with the effects of caffeine upon human physical performance have been conducted. Since caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and it is a constituent of the popularly-consumed beverages - coffee, tea, and cola drinks, it would appear that numerous studies would have been conducted in order to determine the effect of caffeine upon human muscular performance. At any rate, there is a dearth of studies on this topic and the findings of the conducted experiments are equivocal and ambiguous.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of various doses …

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of three different isokinetic velocities on the development of muscular power. Seventy-five college females were matched into four equal groups according to the average of their pre-test scores on the Vertical Power Jump Test and the Power Staircase Test. Group I served as the control group, while all 3 of the experimental groups performed the same isokinetic exercise at different pre-set rates of speed. Groups II, III and IV worked at the selected rates of .8, 2.3 and 3.9 inches per second respectively. All four groups were pre-tested and post-tested …

The Effect Of Pre-Exposure To Sucrose On The Acquisition And Extinction Of A Conditioned Aversion, Shirlee Fenwick Apr 1974

The Effect Of Pre-Exposure To Sucrose On The Acquisition And Extinction Of A Conditioned Aversion, Shirlee Fenwick

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Twenty-eight female, water deprived rats were given 5 minutes access to sucrose for either 1,7,14, or 21 days. They were then given LiC1 injections every third day until an aversion to the sucrose developed. The results indicated that as amount of pre-exposure to sucrose increased, the number of illnesses required to develop an aversion increased. Also, the rate of extinction of the conditioned aversion was inversely related to the number of exposures required. to establish the aversion.

Annotated Bibliography: The Concept Of Androgyny: A Working Bibliography, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 1974

Annotated Bibliography: The Concept Of Androgyny: A Working Bibliography, Nancy Topping Bazin

Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications

Androgyny has been variously understood at different times in different cultures, but the idea has been ever present. Just as in each age myths are reinterpreted, so too the androgynous ideal must be redefined again and again by succeeding generations. Our androgynous vision can be informed by tradition and history, but it must be free of the misogyny and sexism which has pervaded much of what men have written about it heretofore. The continued use of the term androgyny is necessary if we are to transcend the dualistic culture and the sex roles we have inherited, but feminists must clarify …

American Diplomacy Toward China, 1945-1948, Margo E. Horner

History Theses & Dissertations

[In lieu of an abstract, here are the final two paragraphs of Preface]

America's relationship toward China during the postwar years was aptly described by President Truman's summary of his China policy: “The role of this government in its relations with China has been subjected to considerable misrepresentation, distortion, and misunderstanding. Some of these attitudes arose because this government was reluctant to reveal certain facts…."8 Admiral William Leahy, Chief of Staff to presidents Roosevelt and Truman, acknowledged that America’s “post-war attitude toward the Government of China is completely beyond understanding.”9 This writer shares these beliefs and deems it …

An Interdisciplinary Semantic Analysis Of Labels For "Emotional Disturbance", Mary Lou Green

Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

A systematic pilot investigation of connotative differences in the meaning of commonly used labels for "emotional disturbance" was undertaken with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, elementary-education teachers, special-education teachers, and counselors in the Tidewater area of Virginia. The Semantic Differential technique de eloped by Osgood (1952) was selected as the method of investigation, and an instrument was prepared from a sample of the professional and nonprofessional populations through the use of a modified paper-and-pencil free association. A 35-scale instrument was developed from this procedure and administered to a sample of 100 graduate and undergraduate students at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. …
