Relations Of Self-Criticism And Dependency To Depressive Symptomatology: Tests Of Blatt's And Greenberg And Watson's Theories, David B. Canose Jul 2011

Relations Of Self-Criticism And Dependency To Depressive Symptomatology: Tests Of Blatt's And Greenberg And Watson's Theories, David B. Canose

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Two competing sets of hypotheses about the relations of self-criticism and dependency to depressive symptomatology were tested. Blatt's theory (1974, 2004) states that self-criticism and dependency are separate and distinct personality traits that predispose individuals to depression. Hypotheses from Blatt's theory were that self-criticism and dependency each explain unique variance in depressive symptomatology beyond that explained by the other. In contrast, Greenberg and Watson (2006) theorize that dependency underlies self-criticism in predisposing individuals to depression. Hypotheses from Greenberg and Watson's theory were that self-criticism and dependency are both correlated with depressive symptomatology, that self-criticism is correlated with dependency, that self-criticism …

The Effects Of An Intensive Immersion In Doll-Making And Book Arts, Accompanied By Reflective Journaling, On The Personal Growth And Identity Development Of An Art Therapist, Ashley Buchanan

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

This self-study uses a heuristic approach to look at what effects an intense immersion in doll-making, book arts, and reflective journaling has on an art therapy intern/student’s personal growth and identity development. Eight weeks of data collection took place followed by multiple individual content analyses to discover themes from the journals and art-making. The technique of stepping away from the analysis intermittently to provide more objectivity was also used to decrease biases. After comparing themes, universal themes were identified and their significance explored. Within these identified themes, it was acknowledged that the use of dolls and books as a media …

A Comparison Of Human Figures Drawn By Cochlear Implant Recipients And Children With Hearing, Molly Frances Pettit

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the Human Figure Drawings of children with cochlear implants (CIs) and children with normal hearing. Early implantation and the continuing advancement of hearing technologies indicate that, increasingly, children with CIs are developing at a rate equal to their hearing peers. Understanding the cognitive, emotional, and social implications development with the CI has through the use of Human Figure Drawings can lend support to the growing literature in favor of early implantation. This study considered multiple dimensions of living with a cochlear implant and evaluated how children represent their understanding of this life …

A Mixed Methods Study Examining The Efficacy Of Art Media On Stress Reduction, Lilani Pecht May 2011

A Mixed Methods Study Examining The Efficacy Of Art Media On Stress Reduction, Lilani Pecht

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

When considering today’s academic standards, most know that medical students and residents stand in a distinguished class of disciplines undertaking one of the most stressful scholastic paths. Because this notion is becoming more recognizable with the help of research and published studies, some universities have begun implementing electives focused on the health and well being of their students. Such electives have included a variety of stress relieving activities and interventions, including the use of art therapy. While the literature does indicate an effective use of art therapy and art media to alleviate stress, it does not include a study that …

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Korean And American Children’S Human Figure Drawings, Suhyun Tess Lee

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

Children’s human figure drawings (HFDs), known as one of the most widely used drawing assessment techniques, reflect various aspects of understanding children and some studies indicate that children’s HFDs are affected by cultural and environmental factors. Yet, the data collected are out of date or the studies predominantly included children from Western cultures. The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural impact on children’s HFDs from a non-western culture to promote a cross-cultural perspective in the field of art therapy.

In this quantitative study, 23 HFDs were collected in an elementary school setting in South Korea. Drawings were …

Enduring Impact: The Crisis Fetish In Post-9/11 American Television, Christine Muller Apr 2011

Enduring Impact: The Crisis Fetish In Post-9/11 American Television, Christine Muller

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Commonly, those who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event – whether that event involves a near-fatal car accident or the live broadcast of the September 11, 2001 hijackings – have responded, “The world is different now. It’s like a whole new place, and things will never be the same.” These entirely disparate events provoke a similar reaction because of the nature of trauma itself. As psychologist Ronnie Janoff-Bulman and others have argued, trauma shatters the most fundamental assumptions that govern functional daily living, leaving survivors and witnesses questioning what they really can know about and do in this world. …

Judging Credence Service Based On Experience Service Evaluation: Moderating Effect Of Ease Of Assessing And Extrinsic Cues, Kungpo Tao Apr 2011

Judging Credence Service Based On Experience Service Evaluation: Moderating Effect Of Ease Of Assessing And Extrinsic Cues, Kungpo Tao

Marketing Theses & Dissertations

The impact of service failure on customers' perception of service quality is of vital importance to service providers. Prior research reveals little about how services that are purchased jointly by consumers are evaluated. My dissertation investigates the effect of failure of an experience service on the evaluation of a credence service that is purchased at the same time. In experimental study 1 carried out in the context of automobile services, it is found that the effect of service failure on trust is mediated by evaluation of service quality, and moderated by the ease of assessing service. In study 2 carried …

Effect Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Community College Students' Writing Apprehension And Writing Performance, Megan E. Britt Apr 2011

Effect Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Community College Students' Writing Apprehension And Writing Performance, Megan E. Britt

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

This experimental study used a quantitative data collection strategy to examine whether a mindfulness intervention, a three-minute breathing exercise marked by focused attention on the sensations of breath, would affect writing anxiety and writing performance measures. The researcher compared Daly-Miller Writing Apprehension surveys and narrative writing samples from 277 students enrolled in a freshman composition course at a southeastern community college, half of whom practiced the mindful-breathing technique at class onset.

Quantitative results revealed students in the mindful-breathing group experienced a statistically significant decrease in writing apprehension and mechanical error scores from pre- to post-measures when compared to controls. No …

The Chickens Have Come Home To Roost!' Post-9/11 Revengeful Narratives In Lorrie Moore’S A Gate At The Stairs, Pamela Mansutti Apr 2011

The Chickens Have Come Home To Roost!' Post-9/11 Revengeful Narratives In Lorrie Moore’S A Gate At The Stairs, Pamela Mansutti

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In her last novel A Gate at the Stairs (2009), Lorrie Moore follows a twenty-year-old college student’s journey of self-discovery and emancipation as she moves to a medium-sized university town in the Midwest. The young girl, Tassie Keltjin, longs for elaborate and cosmopolitan experiences but meets crudity and shallowness as she crosses the particular chronotope of the story, the algid post-9/11 Midwestern America. Her geographical and existential transition occurs at the turn of 2001 and throughout 2002, when the aftermath of 9/11 begins to penetrate everyone’s ordinary existence in its many degrees and forms of gravity. Interestingly, A Gate at …

Therapeutic Gaming And 9/11, Joyce Goggin Apr 2011

Therapeutic Gaming And 9/11, Joyce Goggin

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In 2003, a group of computer designers unveiled 9/11 Survivor, a video game MOD that they had created using the Unreal Game engine. This game, which places the player in the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, boasts a story-line and gameplay that are rudimentary at best. The player’s avatar is almost invariably a businessman who is unable to find an escape route, so that the only choice players have is to perish by fire or plunge to their inevitable deaths [1].

Looking Elsewhere, Wendy Kozol Apr 2011

Looking Elsewhere, Wendy Kozol

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Amid the vitriolic nationalist responses to 9/11, social critics as early as fall 2001 observed that the mainstream media’s self-absorbed focus on the attacks has served to deflect many Americans’ attention from the complex historical impact of U.S. foreign policies. Either implicitly or explicitly, these critics of 9/11 discourse have called for Americans to "look elsewhere" in order to avoid reproducing a victim narrative. If the relentless focus on 9/11 reinforces a nationalist myopia, looking elsewhere is, however, no guarantor of recognition, much less of accountability. After all, photographs of veiled women in Afghanistan readily turned women into symbols of …

A Conceptual Model For Employer Training To Manage Employee Counter-Productive Behaviors, Naomi Spickard Rock Apr 2011

A Conceptual Model For Employer Training To Manage Employee Counter-Productive Behaviors, Naomi Spickard Rock

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a model for employer training to manage employees who possess counter-productive behaviors. With the increasing encouragement for employers to hire without discriminating, the number of individuals with disabilities in the workforce will rise. There is limited training in universities and businesses to teach how to deal with difficult individuals.

Qualitative research in the form of focus groups was conducted. The following research objectives were developed: 1) Identify components of counter-productive behaviors that need to be managed in the workplace. 2) Develop behavioral management strategies that need be learned by employers. 3) Integrate …

Coping With Customer Sexual Harassment: Examining Retaliation As A Coping Strategy And Testing A Contextual Model, Valerie J. Morganson Apr 2011

Coping With Customer Sexual Harassment: Examining Retaliation As A Coping Strategy And Testing A Contextual Model, Valerie J. Morganson

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Research has established that customer sexual harassment (CSH) is a widespread and harmful workplace phenomenon. This dissertation consists of two studies on the topic. The first sought to operationalize a measure of coping with customer sexual harassment. In addition to three traditional factors of sexual harassment coping (i.e., external, internal, and social), Study 1 predicted that worker retaliation toward the customer would constitute an additional form of coping with CSH. The measure of coping was tested using a sample of 200 women customer service workers. Data were analyzed using factor analysis. As expected, retaliation was supported as a coping strategy, …
