Alfred Hitchcock’S The Rear Window: Cold War, Spatiality, And The Paranoid Subject, Beatrice Kohler Oct 2014

Alfred Hitchcock’S The Rear Window: Cold War, Spatiality, And The Paranoid Subject, Beatrice Kohler

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article investigates the notion of 'Cold War culture' by discussing Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window with a particular focus on spatiality and paranoia. The cinematic screen is seen as a site where socio-cultural conflict is negotiated and political reality is transcoded into fictional narratives. Over and beyond the body of criticism that discusses the movie as a prime example of scopophilia and cinematic self-reflexivity, this paper attempts to combine extradiegetic politics with intradiegetic aesthetics: emerging from a culture of McCarthyite furor, post-war anxieties regarding the millions of soldiers returning from WWII and governmental infringement on privacy, Rear Window …

Review Of Paulo Freire In The 21st Century: Education, Dialogue, And Transformation, By Peter Roberts, Elias Schwieler Oct 2014

Review Of Paulo Freire In The 21st Century: Education, Dialogue, And Transformation, By Peter Roberts, Elias Schwieler

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Paulo Freire's philosophy of education has many similarities with modern theories of teaching and learning. Comparisons can, for example, be made between Freire's concept of banking education and Marton and Säljö's theory of deep and surface learning, and Marton's variation theory has similar characteristics as Freire's idea about how to achieve critical literacy.[1] Moreover, the turn in modern theories of teaching and learning toward student centered learning and a focus on what the student does has equivalence in Freire's view of how education should be structured and developed.

Aggression Exposure To Parental Violence And Resilience As Predictors Of Dating Violence Perpetration In Female College Students, Jessica A. Bodkins-Kite Oct 2014

Aggression Exposure To Parental Violence And Resilience As Predictors Of Dating Violence Perpetration In Female College Students, Jessica A. Bodkins-Kite

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the proposed study was to examine a model of relationship violence that predicts physical dating violence perpetration. The I3 theory states that instigation and impellance are positively related to aggression whereas inhibition is negatively related to aggression, such that an individual is less likely to be aggressive when inhibition is higher than instigation and impellance; however, an individual is more likely to be aggressive when inhibition is lower than instigation and impellance (Finkel, DeWall, Slotter, McNulty, Pond, & Atkins, 2012). Furthermore, individuals who have been exposed to parental violence are more likely to perpetrate dating violence …

Engineering Design: A Cognitive Process Approach, Greg Joseph Strimel Oct 2014

Engineering Design: A Cognitive Process Approach, Greg Joseph Strimel

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this dissertation was to identify the cognitive processes used by advanced pre-engineering students to solve complex engineering design problems. Students in technology and engineering education classrooms are often taught to use an ideal engineering design process that has been generated mostly by educators and curriculum developers. However, the review of literature showed that it is unclear as to how advanced pre-engineering students cognitively navigate solving a complex and multifaceted problem from beginning to end. Additionally, it was unclear how a student thinks and acts throughout their design process and how this affects the viability of their solution. …

Impact Of The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill: An Examination Of Retention Of First Year Students In The Hampton Roads Area, Kim B. Sibson Oct 2014

Impact Of The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill: An Examination Of Retention Of First Year Students In The Hampton Roads Area, Kim B. Sibson

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill has had a tremendous impact on higher education institutions (HEI) across the country. As of 2011, the Veterans Administration (VA) had issued G.I. Bill payments to almost 500,000 veterans. This research examines the effect of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill on student retention in different types of HEIs in the Hampton Roads region of Southeastern Virginia, an area that has a high number of military and military-affiliated residents. Ex post facto data from various institutions have been compared, with a public university, a for-profit college, and a two-year public community college to examine the retention rates of …

Disaster Preparedness & Response: A Survey Of U.S. Dental Hygienists, Brenda Tallon Bradshaw

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine dental hygienists' interests, formal education, views, comfort levels, and intentions for becoming involved in disaster preparedness and response as measured by a 21-item survey entitled "Victim Identification for Disaster Preparedness & Response: A Survey of Dental Hygienists". Methods: A nonprobability convenience sample (n=400) was recruited for an online survey. Data was analyzed for statistical significance using descriptive statistics, chisquare goodness-of-fit tests, a Mann-Whitney U test, and a paired-samples t-test. Similar themes were identified and categorized from open-ended questions. Results: A response rate of 83.5% (n=334) was attained. Regardless of years …

Protective Effects Of Social Support And Self-Esteem On Sexual Minority Young Adults' Mental Health, Sara Bock Oct 2014

Protective Effects Of Social Support And Self-Esteem On Sexual Minority Young Adults' Mental Health, Sara Bock

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Existing research has established that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youths experience higher rates of mental illness. However, fewer studies have examined what influences these disparate outcomes. Meyer's (2003) minority stress theory suggests that social factors, such as social support, and internal resources, such as self-esteem, are important potential moderators that may buffer the detrimental effects of stigma-related stress for sexual minority individuals. This study examined the potential protective effects peer support, parent support, school support, and self-esteem in adolescence in explaining mental health disparities between sexual minority and heterosexual young adults. Mental health outcomes included alcohol consumption, depressive symptoms, …

The Effects Of Primary And Secondary Assortative Mating For Alcohol Misuse On Relationship Satisfaction Alcohol Use And Alcohol Consequences, Michelle Katherine Holt Crewe Oct 2014

The Effects Of Primary And Secondary Assortative Mating For Alcohol Misuse On Relationship Satisfaction Alcohol Use And Alcohol Consequences, Michelle Katherine Holt Crewe

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study examined undergraduate, emerging-adult men and women between the ages of 18 and 30 and their dating partners. The AUDIT (Babor, Higgens-Biddle, Saunders, & Monteiro, 2001) was used to assess their own and their partners' reports of hazardous alcohol misuse. Four types of couples were identified: alcohol misusing participants with alcohol misusing partners (i.e., alcohol concordant couples), alcohol misusing female participants with a non-alcohol misusing partner, alcohol misusing male participants with an non-alcohol misusing partner and non-alcohol misusing women and men (i.e., non misuse concordant couples). Participants and their relationship partners were also assessed for their status as an …

The Relationship Between Gender Match And Leader-Member Exchange In Supervisor-Subordinate Dyads From Information Technology, Michael L. Litano Oct 2014

The Relationship Between Gender Match And Leader-Member Exchange In Supervisor-Subordinate Dyads From Information Technology, Michael L. Litano

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

There is abundant evidence that leader-member exchange (LMX) is advantageous for subordinates (e.g., Gerstner & Day, 1997; Ilies, Nahrgang, & Morgeson, 2007). However, a basic tenet ofLMX theory is that LMX levels vary among subordinates (Dienesch & Liden, 1986; Graen & Uhl-Bien, 1995). Male-dominated professions may be a context in which women find it challenging to develop and maintain high-quality LMX. Indeed, gender mismatch within the supervisor-subordinate dyad predicts outgroup status (Duchon, Green, & Taber, 1986), whereas gender match is positively related to important outcomes, such as subordinate performance and reduced role confiict (e.g., Tsui & O'Reilly, 1989). This research …

The Effectiveness Of Motivational Interviewing On Intimate Partner Violence Clients, Chelsea Drake

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The criminal justice response to perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV) is often a rehabilitative group treatment called Batterers Intervention Programs (Bl). This thesis assesses the effects of motivational interviewing (Ml) on clients ordered to local probation for IPV. Records were collected on IPV offenders enrolled in BI, within a small city in the Southeast Criminal Justice Agency. The pre-MI data were gathered from 2006, and post-MI data from 2007-2008 after the implementation of Ml. This thesis focuses on the use of MI as an intervention to enhance clients' motivation to change. This research is guided by questions that involve …

The Role Of Leader Support For Safety Within The Leader Justice-Safety Performance Relationship, Benjamin R. Kaufman Oct 2014

The Role Of Leader Support For Safety Within The Leader Justice-Safety Performance Relationship, Benjamin R. Kaufman

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Research indicates that leadership is a potent antecedent of safety performance and outcomes. Specifically, quality of leadership has been identified as a critical target for occupational safety research. The current studies focused on employee perceptions of leader justice, operationalized in general (Study 1) and safety-specific contexts (Study 2), and leader support for safety, and investigated their interactions in predicting safety performance. Only one published study has explored the direct impact of leader justice on safety and no previous research has contextualized leader justice in safety-specific terms. It was postulated that general and safety-specific leader justices and support for safety would …

Zola’S Spatial Explorations Of Second Empire Paris, Julia Kröger Jul 2014

Zola’S Spatial Explorations Of Second Empire Paris, Julia Kröger

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Literary criticism now has several decades of intense research on spatiality behind it. Yet it was only with the paradigm shift of the so-called "spatial turn" (Soja 1989: 39; Jameson 1991: 154) that new ideas regarding the interrelation of space as both conceived and perceived, the dialectics of space and place, and the significance of both to human experience, began to be systematically developed (see Foucault 1984; Lefebvre 2000; Relph 1976; Detering et al. 2012: Lotman 1972; Bachtin 2008). The central premise of much of this work is that space and place are produced through a dialectical interaction …

Mallarmé, Poet Of The Earthly World: On Spatiality In L’Après Midi D’Un Faune, Rogério De Melo Franco Jul 2014

Mallarmé, Poet Of The Earthly World: On Spatiality In L’Après Midi D’Un Faune, Rogério De Melo Franco

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

To observe how a notable self-declared detractor of description and realism descripts nature may sound as a rather arbitrary or irreverent way of reading. Nonetheless, besides being a body of texts, Mallarmé is also the result of his interpreters; as much as any other literary authority, readings of his works have been negotiated by different groups, which must not be seen as untouchable or unmovable entities. Enthroning the author by accepting his considerations about his work without question and reasoning might deserve objections as well. In any case, would it be worthwhile to hold an investigation about a …

A Geocritical Approach To The Role Of The Desert In Penelope Lively’S Moon Tiger And Michael Ondaatje’S The English Patient, Sarah Ager Jul 2014

A Geocritical Approach To The Role Of The Desert In Penelope Lively’S Moon Tiger And Michael Ondaatje’S The English Patient, Sarah Ager

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

There are several significant parallels between them as both find and ultimately lose their lovers in the desert and then, after many years have passed, attempt to re-create those spaces in their imaginations as a means of returning to the desert. Marc Augé's concept of 'non-places' can be applied to these novels as a means of exploring whether the physical desert is represented as a transitory space that does not incite a sense of belonging in the characters [1]. The depiction of the desert as a 'non-place' may then be contrasted with Gaston Bachelard's geocritical concept of 'home' …

Isolated Spaces, Fragmented Places: Caryl Phillips’S Ghettos In The Nature Of Blood And The European Tribe, İ.Murat Öner, Mustafa Bal Jul 2014

Isolated Spaces, Fragmented Places: Caryl Phillips’S Ghettos In The Nature Of Blood And The European Tribe, İ.Murat Öner, Mustafa Bal

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This study focuses on Caryl Phillips's deviant Othello character in The Nature of Blood and his transformation and perception of and in the ghettoized space of Venice in a geocritical scope. Geocriticism provides us with genuinely unique approaches to explore real-and-fictional space of Venice in The Nature of Blood (a fictional work) and The European Tribe (a non-fictional work), and other literary and non-literary materials. Interdisciplinary methods of geocriticism also help us analyze the cartographies and continuously changing spatial relations and discover unseen power correlations by using various cultural discourses such as architecture, philosophy, sociology, and geography. By applying geocritical …

How To Do Narratives With Maps?: Cartography As A Performative Act In Gulliver’S Travels And Through The Looking Glass, Emmanuelle Peraldo, Yann Calbérac Jul 2014

How To Do Narratives With Maps?: Cartography As A Performative Act In Gulliver’S Travels And Through The Looking Glass, Emmanuelle Peraldo, Yann Calbérac

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The articulation between literary text and space has been significantly redefined thanks to two major theoretical turns. Because of the spatial turn that marked the humanities and social sciences from the 1980s onwards, time - inherited from the Enlightenment's ideal of progress - is not the main category of analysis any longer: space has replaced it (Soja, 1989). The spatial dimension of objects is now at the core of critical and analytical preoccupations: all fields of knowledge (and not only geography) are now invited to reconsider space, places and mapping. Literary studies reflect this paradigmatic shift as can …

Locating The Limits And Possibilities Of Place, Jessica Maucione Jul 2014

Locating The Limits And Possibilities Of Place, Jessica Maucione

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Theoretical debates regarding space and place, their usefulness and limits, are complicated by the too often presumed "givenness" of the terms [1]. Despite their slippage into one another—conceptually as well as a result of inconsistent or interchangeable use of space and place—many theorists in several disciplines employ spatial or placial metaphors, even as they undertake a discussion of space and/or place. On the other hand, clear designations between space and place frequently prove overly simplistic. For some, space and place are in direct opposition—Yi-Fu Tuan writes, "Place is security, space is freedom: we are attached to the one …

Rethinking The Beginning: Toni Morrison And The Dramatization Of Liminality, Michelle Dreiding Jul 2014

Rethinking The Beginning: Toni Morrison And The Dramatization Of Liminality, Michelle Dreiding

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Beginnings in Toni Morrison's novels enact an uncanny moment of disorientation. They are beginnings in medias res, and, more importantly, beginnings of spatial deictic uncertainties that leave a reader with the absence of a stable system of reference. They enact the predicament of a beginning that precludes the fantasy of an absolute point of origin. Morrison's beginnings self-consciously advocate an imperative to engage in a continual process of re-reading, of revisiting the initial disorientation so as to avoid a "conclusion to living." (Nietzsche) I want to argue that it is in these liminal moments of beginnings of novels that …

The Relationship Of Mobility, Child Characteristics And School Characteristics To The Academic Achievement Of Third Grade Students In A Predominantly Latino District, John Christopher Hicks Jul 2014

The Relationship Of Mobility, Child Characteristics And School Characteristics To The Academic Achievement Of Third Grade Students In A Predominantly Latino District, John Christopher Hicks

Theses and Dissertations in Early Childhood Education

The high rates of mobility in the U.S. can produce negative consequences for children's academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine relationships among math and reading academic achievement, mobility characteristics, student characteristics, and school characteristics in order to develop a model to predict achievement using these variables. Using such a model, educational stakeholders could identify students that are at risk for academic failure. The study included 523 third grade students from a high poverty, predominantly Latino, suburban district. Correlation analyses, factor analyses, ordered linear regression, and forward regression analyses were used to determine the relationships among variables …

Using Two Formats Of A Social Story To Increase The Social-Communication Skills Of Three Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nicole A. Anthony Jul 2014

Using Two Formats Of A Social Story To Increase The Social-Communication Skills Of Three Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Nicole A. Anthony

Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

An alternating treatment design was used to compare the effects of two interventions on the initiations and on-topic responses of three adolescents with autism spectrum disorders. The interventions were participant specific social stories on an iPad and in paper format, both of which occurred in an after-school setting. Results indicated two participants increased the number of initiations and on-topic responses during gaming sessions over baseline levels. In addition, all three children generalized targeted skills to another typical peer while playing the same game introduced during baseline. Implications for current educational practices are addressed and directions for future research are discussed.

Autism Assessment Scale For Children (Aasc): The Development Of A Dsm-V Aiigned Questionnaire To Screen School-Aged Children For High Functioning Autism, Christine Hebert

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the latent factor structure underlying the Ellis Functional Assessment (EFA) for children with high-functioning autism (HFA), to compare the latent factor structures for under-identified subgroups of children (older children, gifted children, female children), and to design a pre-screening assessment for HFA based on those results. The scope of the study is limited to children who have been identified as having HFA and whose parents completed the EFA while patients of a mid-Atlantic clinical practice specializing in autism spectrum disorders. The methodology uses preliminary factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis to both analyze …

Impact Of Transformational Leadership On Job Satisfaction And Organizational Commitment And The Re-Enlistment Intention Of Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers, Kervin Gregory Sider

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

A key component to the success of the Army National Guard (ARNG) is the retention of its soldiers. The ARNG must maintain enough soldiers to accomplish their mission of supporting the active duty Army. Leadership is one of the important factors that influence soldiers' level of job satisfaction and organizational commitment and ultimately their intention to remain or leave the ARNG. This research study sought to determine the impact of transformational leadership on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and re-enlistment intention. The research questions guiding this study included: (1) Does transformational leadership impact the re-enlistment intention of first term soldiers, mid-term …

"Do You Bant?" William Banting And Bantingism: A Cultural History Of A Victorian Anti-Fat Aesthetic, Jaime Michelle Miller Jul 2014

"Do You Bant?" William Banting And Bantingism: A Cultural History Of A Victorian Anti-Fat Aesthetic, Jaime Michelle Miller

English Theses & Dissertations

In the second half of the nineteenth century, a retired Victorian undertaker named William Banting (1796-1878) dramatically altered attitudes toward fat by initiating the profoundly consequential idea of the diet as a saleable commodity capable of marking identity within particular social and racial contexts and connecting obesity with degeneracy, illness, and evil. His work Letter on Corpulence Addressed to the General Public self-published in 1863 describes how, with physician William Harvey, Banting reduced his weight by nearly fifty pounds by following a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Banting and his dieting phenomenon transformed the English cultural consciousness of fatness, and created a …

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of affective valence on signal detection performance and automation use under different levels of uncertainty and with different levels of automation reliability. Method: In Experiment 1, participants completed an affect induction procedure designed to evoke positive, negative, or neutral affect. Participants then completed a visual Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) screening task where they were tasked with detecting the presence of foes among friends on the battlefield. The clarity of the SAR images was manipulated such that half of the images (100 per block) were relatively easy to distinguish (low …

Self-Regulating Teamwork Behaviors In Low-Volume & High-Complexity Production, Aaron W. Powell Jul 2014

Self-Regulating Teamwork Behaviors In Low-Volume & High-Complexity Production, Aaron W. Powell

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An environment of ever increasing competition drives manufacturing organizations to continually search for ways to improve the performance of their production operations. Lean manufacturing, born out of the Toyota Production System (TPS), has become the dominant improvement method sought to meet this need. Although well established in high-volume production settings, the application of lean production methods in low-volume and high-complexity (LVHC) manufacturing contexts has not been as successful. A commonly cited reason is a biased focus on the technical aspects of implementing lean methods with little regard for the social system involved in the change. In the LVHC manufacturing context, …

Interrelationships Between Sensation Seeking And Psychopathy, Casey S. Iwai Jul 2014

Interrelationships Between Sensation Seeking And Psychopathy, Casey S. Iwai

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Psychopathic and sensation seeking traits are often correlated; however, sensation seeking alone is not inherently pathological. This study seeks to investigate possible moderating variables between individuals who are high on sensation seeking but low on measures of psychopathic or antisocial traits. Specifically, a positive family environment is hypothesized to be a moderating variable in the development of psychopathic traits among high sensation seekers. A college student sample assessed for psychopathy, sensation seeking, and family functioning is used to test this hypothesis. Significant relationships between all three constructs were found. Similar to previous data, sensation seeking was found to correlate with …
