Understanding The Determinants Of Parental Decision-Making And Harsh Parenting Behavior, Ralitsa Stoyneva Maduro Jul 2016

Understanding The Determinants Of Parental Decision-Making And Harsh Parenting Behavior, Ralitsa Stoyneva Maduro

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The high prevalence and negative consequences of hash parenting among US parents is well-documented. However, intervention and prevention efforts aimed at reducing the rates of harsh parenting have had limited success. A goal of this paper was to provide a novel method of studying parenting behavior; moving beyond correlational findings. Specifically, I argued that preventing harsh parenting has been a challenge, in part because of lack of understanding of the decision-making processes underlying the behavior. In an effort to incorporate tradition decision making methodology, I designed a between subjects, single-blind, randomized experiment. The experimental manipulations were design to induced emotional …

Acculturation And Enculturation, Perception Of Depressive Symptoms, And Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Korean Americans, Kristoffer Park Jul 2016

Acculturation And Enculturation, Perception Of Depressive Symptoms, And Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Korean Americans, Kristoffer Park

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The literature suggests that acculturation, enculturation, and the perception of mental health symptoms are some of the factors that explain help-seeking behaviors in Asian Americans. While there has been previous research addressing these concerns for Asian Americans as a unified ethnic group, few studies have examined these factors to explain help-seeking behaviors specifically in Korean Americans. 107 Korean Americans were recruited from Korean American churches in a large metropolitan city in the southeast region. Participants completed an online questionnaire, which included instruments assessing acculturation (AVS-R) and enculturation (EAVS-AA-R) levels as well as their perception of how problematic depressive symptoms were …

Mathematics Proficiency Of Fashion Marketing And Fashion Merchandising Students, Christina Gordon Miles Jul 2016

Mathematics Proficiency Of Fashion Marketing And Fashion Merchandising Students, Christina Gordon Miles

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Fashion Marketing and Fashion Merchandising (FMM) students should be prepared with a sound mathematics background as they graduate from programs and enter today’s workforce. Unfortunately, future employers within the fashion industry indicate that prospective employees often cannot pass entry level mathematics tests (Shirley & Kohler, 2012). This non-experimental descriptive study examined the mathematics proficiency of postsecondary students entering and completing FMM programs in order to determine if FMM students possess the mathematics skills needed for entry into the workforce. The Mathematics for Industry Test (MIT), a 40-item, timed, paper-and-pencil assessment was administered to 94 entering and 111 completing students enrolled …

Linking Executive Functions And Written Language Intervention For Students With Language Learning Disorders, Silvana M. R. Watson, Anne M. P. Michalek, Robert A. Gable

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

Purpose: School based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) has an important role in the identification and intervention of problems in oral and written language. In collaboration with classroom teachers, they often are asked to develop intervention plans that include evidence-based practices for those students with language learning disabilities (LLD) who have language deficits. The purpose of this article is to bridge theory to practice by explaining an evidence-based instructional model, the self-regulated strategy development model (SRSD), for SLPs to consider as they deliver instruction to support the written language deficits of students with LLD.

Method: The authors examine critically the relationship between …

Use Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training To Teach Information Literacy Threshold Concepts, Lucinda Rush May 2016

Use Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training To Teach Information Literacy Threshold Concepts, Lucinda Rush

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

Introduction

Social networking sites (SNS) have been integrated seamlessly into our everyday lives, and college students are one of their biggest consumers (Lenhart, et. al. 2010). Just as consumers of Starbucks have been trained to speak the language of the corporation, ordering “venti” instead of “large”, and consumers of smart phones have come to rely on them in their every-day lives for things like directions, instant access to email, fitness apps, and more, social media users have been trained to intuitively expect and respond to things on their SNS in day-to-day life. The skills that our students have developed through …

Principles Of Anti-Discriminatory Design, D. E. Wittkower May 2016

Principles Of Anti-Discriminatory Design, D. E. Wittkower

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Technical design can produce exclusionary and even discriminatory effects for users. A lack of discriminatory intent is insufficient to avoid discriminatory design, since implicit assumptions about users rarely include all relevant user demographics, and in some cases, designing for all relevant users is actually impossible. To minimize discriminatory effects of technical design, an actively anti-discriminatory design perspective must be adopted. This article provides examples of discriminatory user exclusion, then defining exclusionary design in terms of disaffordances and dysaffordances. Once these definitions are in place, principles of anti-discriminatory design are advanced, drawing upon a method of phenomenological variation employed in the …

Eyes Wide Open: Pupil Size As A Proxy For Inhibition In The Masked-Priming Paradigm, Jason Geller, Mary L. Still, Alison L. Morris May 2016

Eyes Wide Open: Pupil Size As A Proxy For Inhibition In The Masked-Priming Paradigm, Jason Geller, Mary L. Still, Alison L. Morris

Psychology Faculty Publications

A core assumption underlying competitive-network models of word recognition is that in order for a word to be recognized, the representations of competing orthographically similar words must be inhibited. This inhibitory mechanism is revealed in the masked-priming lexical-decision task (LDT) when responses to orthographically similar word prime-target pairs are slower than orthographically different word prime-target pairs (i.e., inhibitory priming). In English, however, behavioral evidence for inhibitory priming has been mixed. In the present study, we utilized a physiological correlate of cognitive effort never before used in the masked-priming LDT, pupil size, to replicate and extend behavioral demonstrations of inhibitory …

Nature As The Ultimate Container: A Phenomenological Self-Study On Eco-Centric Art Making With Implications For Practicing Art Therapists, Tyler Maria Dillingham May 2016

Nature As The Ultimate Container: A Phenomenological Self-Study On Eco-Centric Art Making With Implications For Practicing Art Therapists, Tyler Maria Dillingham

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

The field of art therapy lacks sufficient research support in the use of art processes and materials. Literature exists that addresses the potential therapeutic effect of a wide variety of traditional art media. However, no literature exists in support of the use of natural materials in art therapy or in working outside in nature. This self-study aimed to explore the phenomenon of working with natural materials outside of the traditional studio setting, out in nature, to explore and assess implications for practicing art therapists and their clients.

The assumption of the researcher is that all humans may benefit from contact …

This capstone also provided the opportunity to increase the writer’s professional identity. Radford University participated in the study. The informative presentation was created to increase understanding and awareness about art therapy. Anonymous questionnaires were provided after the presentation. The questionnaires allowed data to be collected and reviewed to conclude results about the presentation. There were 30 Radford …

Growing Up Grounded: Learning To Cope With A Parent Who Suffers From A Mental Illness: An Art-Based Workbook, Shelby Marie Wynn May 2016

Growing Up Grounded: Learning To Cope With A Parent Who Suffers From A Mental Illness: An Art-Based Workbook, Shelby Marie Wynn

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

Through a meticulous search within art therapy and other mental health professions, attention has been brought to the significant lack of literature on the topic of adolescents living with a parent who suffers from a mental illness. Literature that does breech this topic seems to focus primarily on the adult child, rather than the adolescent. Furthermore, although art therapy touches on its efficacy in developing coping skills in adolescents, it lacks in research and resources regarding this particular demographic. An art-based workbook was created following a modified version of the 12 Step program for teens and informed by art therapy …

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

There are many difficulties associated with caregiving including increased levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. Limited research explores the impact of art therapy on caregiver burnout and there is no literature addressing the impact of art therapy on family caregivers of individuals diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. This proposal details an in-depth eight week program design to be implemented in individual sessions. The program outlined explores a series of themes related to a family member’s experience as a caregiver, using art materials as a means of reflection and expression of emotions and feelings associated with this role. The goal of this …

Contributing To Building A Conceptual Model Of Art Therapist Professional Identity, Rachel Davenport Ward

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

Art therapists are currently working to solidify multiple aspects of the profession and become more distinguished from counselors. The development of a conceptual model of art therapist professional identity aims to identify essential components that make up an art therapist’s professional identity. Emerging domains and key ideas were identified in a review of the literature and triangulated with the interview responses of participants. The domains identified in this study as pivotal to art therapist professional identity include Engagement Behaviors, Education and Training, Theoretical Approach, and Art Making.

The Effects Of Parental Cancer On The Professional Identity Development Of An Art Therapist-In-Training: An Art-Based, Heuristic Self-Study, Ashley L. Sweigart

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

Although existing literature asserts that personal experience greatly impacts the development of professional identity among mental health professionals, the impact of personal crisis during graduate education and training—the formative period of professional identity development—remains largely unaddressed. Through engagement in this art-based heuristic self-study, I examined my own experience coping with personal crisis as an art therapy graduate student. I committed to eight weeks of art making and reflective writing in order to achieve greater understanding and self-awareness regarding the effects of coping with parental cancer and the death of my father on my professional identity development. Content analysis of the …

Art Therapy And Cognitive Processing Therapy For Combat Ptsd: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Vanessa Pierce

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

This randomized controlled trial supplemented existing data from previous studies on the effect of art therapy in conjunction with Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) versus CPT alone on symptoms of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder. The 11 veterans recruited in this study were clinically diagnosed with PTSD, and were randomized by time of admission to either the experimental or control condition. Test measures included the PCL-M, BDI-II, to measure symptoms associated with posttraumatic stress and depression, and the PTGI to measure positive psychological growth. The results on the PCL-M and BDI-II supported trends from previous studies suggesting art therapy in combination with …

The Costume-Making Experience: A Heuristic Self-Study For Implications To Art Therapy, Melissa Mary Sykes May 2016

The Costume-Making Experience: A Heuristic Self-Study For Implications To Art Therapy, Melissa Mary Sykes

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

Within the field art therapy, numerous processes and materials exist to promote expression of affect and the enhancement of creativity. These mediums are crucial to the progression of art therapy, including drawing, painting, and three-dimensional processes such as clay, containers, and fiber arts. Art therapy is part of expressive therapy, where puppetry, doll-making, and mask-making have moved from the field of drama therapy to art therapy. The evidence for certain techniques, such as costuming in art therapy, is still lacking. This study implies Landy’s continuum in drama therapy as parallel to Lusebrink’s Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) in art therapy, suggesting …

A Comparison Of Human Figures Drawn By Hiv Positive And Hiv Negative Children In Limuru, Kenya, Ruth H. Rand

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers

The proposed study aimed to determine psychological sequelae of HIV as manifested in the HFD. The goal of this study was to compare HFDs drawn by Kenyan children with and without HIV, using a modified form of the Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale (FEATS) (Gantt & Tabone, 1998). It was hypothesized that statistically significant differences between the two groups of drawings would exist. Based upon differences between the two groups of HFDs, inferences were made regarding the effect of HIV on children living in Kenya. Research suggests that there are significant negative ramifications of HIV diagnosis including depressive symptoms, decreased …

Initial Development And Validation Of The Transgender Ally Identity Scale For Counselors, Jamie D. Bower

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

The Transgender Ally Identity Scale for Counselors (TAISC) is a 35-item scale measuring counselors’ ally identity for working with transgender individuals. The purpose of the current study was to develop and initially validate the TAISC. Using a non-experimental survey design, the scale was developed (i.e., item development, external review, pilot study) and validation analyses were performed (i.e., exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency, validity, and social desirability analyses). Electronic data were collected from a nationwide sample of counseling students, professional counselors, and counselor educators (N=285). Participants completed a survey packet consisting of the TAISC, Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale (MCKAS; …

The Principal's Role; Distributed Leadership, Kathryn R. Hermann

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

The role of the principal role has become very complex with the increased focus on accountability and student achievement. Principals can no longer do their jobs alone. Distributed leadership has been the subject of considerable educational research and discourse in recent years. This study explores how principals employ or do not employ distributed leadership with their staffs. The study found that the school principal plays a key role in supporting the school by communicating a common purpose, that distributed leadership is developed within a school climate built upon collaboration, the principal models leadership using tools and routines, and situational decision …

Essays On The Equity Risk Premium, Mohamed Mehdi Rahoui Apr 2016

Essays On The Equity Risk Premium, Mohamed Mehdi Rahoui

Finance Theses & Dissertations

The equity risk premium (ERP) is an essential component of any asset pricing model both for academics and practitioners alike. Nevertheless, the financial literature does not accord much attention to the ERP estimation issues (Damodaran, 2015). The first chapter of this dissertation gives a summary of the recent literature review on the subject of the ERP. The second chapter explores four of the most commonly cited models in literature for estimating the ERP: the Historical Mean of Realized Returns Model (HMRRM), the Dividend Discount Model (DDM), the Free Cash Flow Model (FCFM), and the Sharpe Ratio Model (SRM). The results …

The Relationship Between Counselors' Multicultural Counseling Competence And Poverty Beliefs, Madeline Elizabeth Clark Apr 2016

The Relationship Between Counselors' Multicultural Counseling Competence And Poverty Beliefs, Madeline Elizabeth Clark

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

The relationship between increased levels of poverty and decreased levels of psychological wellbeing and overall wellness is well documented. Although poverty clearly impacts mental health and wellness, little research in counseling has been conducted exploring the poverty attitudes of counselors. This study explored the relationship between professional counselors’ multicultural counseling competence (MCC), poverty beliefs, and select demographic factors (i.e. counseling specialty, gender, age, ethnocultural identity, poverty counseling experience, and personal poverty experience). Data were collected using survey-based methods from professional counselors of all specialties. Results of a hierarchical linear regression indicate that increased MCC, adjusted for select demographic factors, is …

Two Studies On The Use Of Information Technology In Collaborative Planning, Forecasting & Replenishment (Cpfr), David Mccaw Simmonds Apr 2016

Two Studies On The Use Of Information Technology In Collaborative Planning, Forecasting & Replenishment (Cpfr), David Mccaw Simmonds

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Theses & Dissertations

In the 1st study, I seek to determine whether there are trends in the coverage of the use of Information Technology in CPFR in support of Supply Chain Management. I look at the way technology is studied along two dimensions. The first dimension is the function within CPFR—Planning, Forecasting or Replenishment. The second dimension is level at which the study addresses use of the technology, whether at the Operational, Tactical or Strategic level. Within this 3x3 matrix, I seek to prove that studies would primarily fall along a line where the higher the level functions should be served by systems …
