Estimating Cognitive Workload In An Interactive Virtual Reality Environment Using Electrophysiological And Kinematic Activity, Christoph Tremmel Apr 2019

Estimating Cognitive Workload In An Interactive Virtual Reality Environment Using Electrophysiological And Kinematic Activity, Christoph Tremmel

Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations

As virtual reality (VR) technology continues to gain prominence in commercial, educational, recreational and research applications, there is increasing interest in incorporating physiological sensors in VR devices for passive user-state monitoring to eventually increase the sense of immersion. By recording physiological signals such as the electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyography (EMG) or kinematic parameters during the use of a VR device, the user’s interactions in the virtual environment could be adapted in real time based on the user’s cognitive state. This dissertation evaluates the feasibility of passively monitoring cognitive workload via electrophysiological and kinematic activity while performing a classical n-back task in …

Self-Regulated Learning Strategies Vs Evidence-Based Study Strategies, Wanda Brooks, Linda Bol Mar 2019

Self-Regulated Learning Strategies Vs Evidence-Based Study Strategies, Wanda Brooks, Linda Bol

College of Education & Professional Studies (Darden) Posters

There is a growing concern about students entering college only to drop out or change majors after a semester or more of study. There are multiple reasons for this including personal reasons that may have nothing to do with academics, of course, but sometimes students switch to different majors because they feel that their original choice is too difficult after not doing well in the required introductory courses. Training in self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies may enable students to gain the skills necessary (e.g., making goals, planning, organization) to succeed in gateway courses that have a minimum grade requirement. These behaviors …

Exploring The Influence Of Maternity Leave On Maternal Child Bonding, Amber Wilson, Kathie Zimbro, Carolyn Rutledge

College of Health Sciences Posters

PROBLEM: Approximately half of the women of child-bearing age are eligible for Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). However, taking unpaid maternity leave may place a significant financial burden on any family. Lack of maternity leave, or shorter durations of maternity leave is listed as a significant barrier to breastfeeding, yet there have been no changes implemented to improve that since FMLA was signed into action in 1993. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explore relationships between participant characteristics, breastfeeding initiation and duration, maternity leave, motherhood, postpartum mood disorders (anxiety/depression), and maternal child bonding and attachment. EBP QUESTIONS: (1) …

The Impact Of Mandatory Substance Abuse Counselor Reporting Requirements On Child Maltreatment Reporting Outcomes, Bilgé Yilmaz, Kelli E. Will, Andrew D. Plunk

College of Sciences Posters

Child maltreatment takes on numerous forms, including physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect, and affects an estimated 38% of children in the United States (U.S.). Due to the deleterious effects of maltreatment, 48 states mandate most health professionals to report suspected abuse and neglect. Yet, only 14 states specifically require substance abuse counselors to report suspected abuse and neglect. Substance abuse is commonly implicated in maltreatment cases, with an estimated 40 to 70 percent involving alcohol or drug use among perpetrators, which points to the importance of examining the association between substance abuse counselor reporting and the outcome …

A Path Analysis Of The Mediating Role Of Flood Risk Perceptions, Donta Council Mar 2019

A Path Analysis Of The Mediating Role Of Flood Risk Perceptions, Donta Council

College of Business (Strome) Posters

The purpose of this research is to examine the multiple relationships that explain household adaptive behaviors, and if (and how) risk perceptions play a mediating role in these relationships. Given the shift in transferring risks from flood risk governance structures to households, there is a renewed interest in promoting private adaptive behavior amongst households that are vulnerable to flood impacts. While the literature purports the claim that flood risk perceptions rarely account for the variance explained in statistically modeling for household adaptive behaviors, this study will analyze an integrated conceptual framework that explores the mediating role of risk perceptions. The …

Reimagining Medical Education In The Age Of Ai, Steven A. Wartman, C. Donald Combs Jan 2019

Reimagining Medical Education In The Age Of Ai, Steven A. Wartman, C. Donald Combs

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Available medical knowledge exceeds the organizing capacity of the human mind, yet medical education remains based on information acquisition and application. Complicating this information overload crisis among learners is the fact that physicians' skill sets now must include collaborating with and managing artificial intelligence (AI) applications that aggregate big data, generate diagnostic and treatment recommendations, and assign confidence ratings to those recommendations. Thus, an overhaul of medical school curricula is due and should focus on knowledge management (rather than information acquisition), effective use of AI, improved communication, and empathy cultivation.

Women On Top: Power And Transgression In The Libro Del Conde Partinuplés, Martha Daas

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

English

In the romance tradition, women are relegated to “ideal love” or distracting presence, either Virgin (Christian presence) or Witch/Whore (pagan presence). The women in the Spanish Conde Partinuplés, however, transgress their typical roles. Throughout the tale, Partinuplés is aided by a succession of women who do not follow the rules of Romance. Through the transgression of gender and racial norms, the female-dominated spaces become spaces of transformative power. In direct opposition are the male-dominated Christian-identified spaces of the Church and Court. During the romance these spaces hold only treachery and falsehood for the young Count. The ambiguity of the …

It’S Elementary: The Bayeux Tapestry As A Medieval Educational Tool, Sarah Bulger

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

The Bayeux Tapestry, a 230-foot-long, 950-year-old Anglo-Norman embroidery has baffled historians resulting in extensive (and diverse) scholarship since its rediscovery in the eighteenth century. The Bayeux Tapestry plays a preeminent role (outside of contemporaneous manuscripts and texts) in deciphering aspects of medieval life in England through its visual representation of the age of the Norman Conquest. Long-standing assumptions about the Bayeux Tapestry’s commission, production, and purpose have accumulated through the years based on a single inventory document from 1476 postulating its intended location and function as a religious ornament for Bayeux Cathedral. Modern academics have explored themes readily visible …
