A group of faculty, administrators, and educational developers respond to this question with individual narratives bound together by a common theme of reflective practice in times of crises to help faculty become more resilient in preparing for ongoing upheavals and unexpected crises while pursuing more inclusive communities. Our personal narratives reflect on the subjects of flexibility in the face of crises, technology and ethics, study abroad exposure to ethical challenges, students’ growing anxiety and mental health, modeling metacognition with peers and …

Our Metropolitan Separations: The Case For Metropolitan Public Schools In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Marvin T. Chiles Jan 2022

Our Metropolitan Separations: The Case For Metropolitan Public Schools In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Marvin T. Chiles

History Faculty Publications

This research uses published reports from think tanks, statistical data from the Virginia Department of Education, newspaper articles, and court cases to argue for the creation of metropolitan school districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Framing this article's importance is the undeniable fact that almost seventy years after the famous Brown v. Board of Education decision (1954), American public schools still legally operate on a racially segregated basis. Virginia contributes to this issue by having some of the highest rates of racial segregation within its major metropolitan area school districts. This racial segregation has resulted in disparate educational outcomes between …

A Literature Review On Combining Heuristics And Exact Algorithms In Combinatorial Optimization, Hesamoddin Tahami, Hengameh Fakhravar

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

There are several approaches for solving hard optimization problems. Mathematical programming techniques such as (integer) linear programming-based methods and metaheuristic approaches are two extremely effective streams for combinatorial problems. Different research streams, more or less in isolation from one another, created these two. Only several years ago, many scholars noticed the advantages and enormous potential of building hybrids of combining mathematical programming methodologies and metaheuristics. In reality, many problems can be solved much better by exploiting synergies between these approaches than by “pure” classical algorithms. The key question is how to integrate mathematical programming methods and metaheuristics to achieve such …

Although K-12 engineering outreach commonly involves college students, the young professionals who act as ambassadors for their field are less likely to be studied than the students they serve. Yet, outreach activities may offer opportunities for undergraduate students to develop aspects of their professional selves. As there is currently no comprehensive measure that allows researchers, program evaluators, and outreach advisors to examine ambassadors' professional development and growth, this study sought to develop and validate an Ambassador Questionnaire (AQ). The multi-step process included the selection and adaptation of items from extant measures of engineering students' motivation, beliefs, professional skills, and perceptions …

Are Ceos To Blame For Corporate Failure? Evidence From Chapter 11 Filings, Rajib Chowdhury, John A. Doukas Jan 2022

Are Ceos To Blame For Corporate Failure? Evidence From Chapter 11 Filings, Rajib Chowdhury, John A. Doukas

Finance Faculty Publications

This study examines whether chief executive officers (CEOs) are to blame for corporate failures. Using alternative CEO managerial ability measures, we document that high-ability (low-ability) CEOs are less (more) likely to be associated with bankruptcy. We also find that reorganized firms run by high-ability incumbent CEOs experience improved financial performance after filing for Chapter 11. Firms that hire high-ability CEOs with bankruptcy experience also realize improved financial performance. Our evidence indicates that the likelihood of corporate bankruptcy is unrelated to the presence of high-ability managers and that bankruptcy does not adversely affect the post-bankruptcy careers of high-ability CEOs.

Tropical Cyclone Frequency: Turning Paleoclimate Into Projections, E. J. Wallace, S. G. Dee Jan 2022

Tropical Cyclone Frequency: Turning Paleoclimate Into Projections, E. J. Wallace, S. G. Dee

OES Faculty Publications

Future changes to tropical cyclone (TC) climate have the potential to dramatically impact the social and economic landscape of coastal communities. Paleoclimate modeling and paleohurricane proxy development offer exciting opportunities to understand how TC properties (like frequency) change in response to climate variability on long time scales. However, sampling biases in proxies make it difficult to ascertain whether signals in paleohurricane records are related to climate variability or just stochasticity. Short observations and simulation biases prevent TC models from capturing the full range of climate variability and TC characteristics. Integration of these two data types can help address these uncertainties. …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The “magic spot” alarmones (pp)pGpp, previously implicated in Clostridioides difficile antibiotic survival, are synthesized by the RelA-SpoT homolog (RSH) of C. difficile (RSHCd) and RelQCd. These enzymes are transcriptionally activated by diverse environmental stresses. RSHCd has previously been reported to synthesize ppGpp, but in this study, we found that both clostridial enzymes exclusively synthesize pGpp. While direct synthesis of pGpp from a GMP substrate, and (p)ppGpp hydrolysis into pGpp by NUDIX hydrolases, have previously been reported, there is no precedent for a bacterium synthesizing pGpp exclusively. Hydrolysis of the 5′ phosphate or pyrophosphate from GDP …

Distributed identity technology provides solutions to many of the faults currently found in federated identity systems. Applying this technology to internet of things devices has many possible benefits in the realm of device authentication. However, this also provides new challenges not present in existing distributed identity systems. The large number of devices that would enter and leave the system means balancing sybil attack vulnerability and linkage attack vulnerability becomes challenging. Internet of things devices also have less memory and computing power than a standard personal computer or phone. This means any protocol to execute distributed identity in these devices must …

Wittgenstein On Miscalculation And The Foundations Of Mathematics, Samuel J. Wheeler Jan 2022

Wittgenstein On Miscalculation And The Foundations Of Mathematics, Samuel J. Wheeler

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics, Wittgenstein notes that he has 'not yet made the role of miscalculating clear' and that 'the role of the proposition: "I must have miscalculated"...is really the key to an understanding of the "foundations" of mathematics.' In this paper, I hope to get clear on how this is the case. First, I will explain Wittgenstein's understanding of a 'foundation' for mathematics. Then, by showing how the proposition 'I must have miscalculated' differentiates mathematics from the physical sciences, we will see how this proposition is the key to understanding the foundations of mathematics.
