Improving Kindergarten Achievement Via Hands-On Teaching: A Developmental Approach., Henry O. Hollimon Jr.
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes a program to improve the achievement of the kindergarten students at the primary school in Charles City County. The instructional program was structured and academic in nature. Developmental hands-on instructional procedures needed for kindergarten-age children was not used. School administrators encouraged the situation in order to have the children reading by the time the entered first grade. All of the kindergarten teachers were not endorsed in kindergarten or early childhood education, and no Inservice teacher-training specific to the instructional needs of that grade had been provided by the school division. The results were students scoring below the …

The Development Of A Plan For Recruitment And Retention Of Black Students In Associate Degree Nursing Programs., Brenda Mccane Harrell
The Development Of A Plan For Recruitment And Retention Of Black Students In Associate Degree Nursing Programs., Brenda Mccane Harrell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The number of Black students enrolled in associate degree nursing programs across the country, including California Community Colleges, is not in proportion to the general population. It is critical that educators pay attention to the need to recruit the minority student and providing measures to retain these students. The purposes of the study were: (1) to identify the major factors that influence the retention of Black nursing students in associate degree nursing programs in American community colleges, (2) to compare and contrast major problems in retaining Black associate degree nursing students in predominately white community colleges with those of Black …

Improving The Delivery Of Academic Advising At West Coast Christian College, Joseph W. Laing
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purposes of this project were to identify the procedures and processes that affect the advising relationship and retention at West Coast Christian College, to discover what is being done to enhance academic advising in other postsecondary institutions that have similar organizational features to West Coast Christian College, and to devise directives to improve academic advising and enhance retention at West Coast Christian College. Answers were sought through five research questions to provide information about strengths and weaknesses of the existing advising program at West Coast Christian College: the student and advisor perception of academic advising at the College, the …

An Investigation To Determine The Prevalence Of Starvation Dieting Among High School Students As Affected By Gender, Race And Socioeconomic Status, Michal Lee Erickson
An Investigation To Determine The Prevalence Of Starvation Dieting Among High School Students As Affected By Gender, Race And Socioeconomic Status, Michal Lee Erickson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Sociologists report that twenty million Americans are on a 'serious' diet. There has never been a period when such large numbers of people have spent so much time, money, and emotional energy on their weight. The message conveyed by society, the Fashion and movie industries, modern medicine and the media is quite clear - thin is in! The problem lies in the fact that the message does not distinguish between realistic standards and unattainable ideals, especially for women.
Experts on eating disorders report that ninety percent of those suffering from anorexia nervosa (self-starvation) are females, ages 13-21, from white ethnic …
Use Of Selected Elements Of Patient Perception Of Care In The Evaluation Of Clinical Training, Patrick J. Goff
Use Of Selected Elements Of Patient Perception Of Care In The Evaluation Of Clinical Training, Patrick J. Goff
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this study was to develop a role for the patient perception of care provided by the student doctor within the educational program at Palmer College. The Council on Chiropractic Education, the federally recognized accrediting body of the profession, has indicated that the perception of care by the patient receiving that care should be an important outcome measure of the education process in the colleges. At the time of this study the patient's perception of care was not used in evaluating clinical competence. A review of the literature resulted in the selection of the Patient-Doctor Interaction Scale (PDIS) …
Developing A Self-Directed Computer Training Program For El Camino College Faculty, Donald F. Mcallister
Developing A Self-Directed Computer Training Program For El Camino College Faculty, Donald F. Mcallister
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This study arose from discussions with the deans of instruction of El Camino College, California, during which it appeared that there was a need to develop self-directed faculty training programs in the use of computers. There was little necessity to convince the computer-literate faculty that microcomputers should be used in their educational activities. However, it was difficult to make faculty who were not computer-literate see the usefulness of microcomputers in their work, or to convince them to take advantage of existing staff development programs in computer training. Developing self-directed programs in computer training and basic computer literacy seemed to be …

Development Of A Test And Establishment Of A Cut Score For The National Fire Academy Chemistry Of Hazardous Materials Course, Burton Adrian Clark
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project (MARP) was to develop a valid and reliable test instrument and to establish a reasonable cut score for the National Fire Academy's (NFA) Chemistry of Hazardous Materials course final exam. In addition, a test technical manual was written based on the American Psychological Association's Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. 1985. There were nine research questions addressed in this MARP: (1) Were test development procedures based on correct educational methodology? (2) Does the test have content validity? (3) Does the test have domain validity? (4) Has an optimal cut score for the …

Environmental Health And Safety At Arizona State University At Tempe: Development Of A Model Program., Charles R. Campbell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
For over 13 years, officials at Arizona State University (ASU) have called for centralization of campus environmental health and safety (EHS) practices currently handled by five separate departments. As a step toward answering this call, this study involved a two-stage project.
The first stage collected information on centralized programs at different colleges and universities to develop a program model for use at ASU. The second stage evaluated the developed mode. Data were collected on the model's appropriateness with respect to eight major areas of environmental health and safety concerns from a sample of ASU officials and personnel working for each …
