Coliphage As An Indicator Of Fecal Pollution In Marine Waters: Assay, Validation, And Application, Donald S. Mccorquodale Jr.
Coliphage As An Indicator Of Fecal Pollution In Marine Waters: Assay, Validation, And Application, Donald S. Mccorquodale Jr.
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Escherichia coli, the preferred bacterial indicator for fecal pollution in fresh waters, does not conform to the concept of an indicator microorganism because it is rapidly killed or inactivated by seawater. This series of papers investigated the value of coliphage, a virus which infects E. coli, as an indicator of pollution in saline waters. In order to be an accurate indicator an organism must (1) be ubiquitous in wastewater, (2) survive and be detectable at least as long as the harmful organisms, and (3) be easy to isolate and identify.
A review of the literature determined that coliphage …
A Comparison Of The Relative Sediment Transport Of Quartz And Aragonite Sand For Use As Beach Renourishment Materials In South Florida, Brian Lewis Lipsitz
A Comparison Of The Relative Sediment Transport Of Quartz And Aragonite Sand For Use As Beach Renourishment Materials In South Florida, Brian Lewis Lipsitz
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
An evaluation of the relative rates of sediment transport of an oolitic aragonite sand and a quartz quarry sand as possible beach renourishment materials has been conducted. When comparing equal volumes, the aragonite experienced less transport than the quartz in both the longshore and in the onshore-offshore directions. When comparing equal size fractions, in sizes 0.35mm and smaller, aragonite was less transportable. The quartz was less transportable in the sizes greater than 0.35mm. This trend was observed in two separate experiments and is attributed to the effective density ratio of aragonite to quartz, dissimilarities in roundness and sphericity, and to …

Organization For Collection Development In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Carol W. Cubberley
Organization For Collection Development In Medium-Sized Academic Libraries, Carol W. Cubberley
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
At the University of Central Florida Library, the librarians with collection development assignments, and the Head of Collection Development, were frustrated in their attempts to fulfill their responsibilities. Those librarians did not report to the Department Head, but to other departments, and only a small percentage of their time was set aside for collection development. This meant that collection development duties frequently were deferred to other duties. There also was uncertainty about what duties could be expected of these librarians. Some functioned only as liaisons to academic departments, while others did extensive selection of material, wrote collection development policies, and …

Making Academic Remediation Programs More A Positive, Image Building Experience For The Adult Learner, Sue Bragg
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The writer built into a vocational school’s remedial program techniques and strategies to develop in disadvantaged adult learners’ positive attitudes and a success oriented mind set in order to improve confident, self-image, and attitude about their personal potential for success in school, on the job, and in life. On entry into the remedial program, students were given an attitude survey to determine how they felt about their past academic success and about themselves in a school setting. They were also given the Barbe modality test at that time to enable the writer to better prescribe appropriate materials to meet their …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A computer program was implemented by the writer as an aid to improve third graders’ spelling word mastery. The program's aims were to help medium-ability third graders improve spelling scores and proficiency.
Following observation and weekly spelling test scores, three third grade teachers, which includes the writer, chose five medium-ability students from their rooms to be involved in the ten-week project. Evaluation of the project by the students' pre- and posttest results and the teacher post-survey concluded that the computer aided in the improvement of students' spelling scores and spelling proficiency. The computer program “Guess That Word” ( 1982) was …

Amplification And Chromosomal Dispersion Of Human Endogenous Retroviral Sequences, Paul E. Steele, Malcolm A. Martin, Arnold B. Rabson, Theodore Bryan, Stephen J. O'Brien
Amplification And Chromosomal Dispersion Of Human Endogenous Retroviral Sequences, Paul E. Steele, Malcolm A. Martin, Arnold B. Rabson, Theodore Bryan, Stephen J. O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
Endogenous retroviral sequences in humans have undergone amplification events involving both viral and flanking cellular sequences. We cloned members of an amplified family of full-length endogenous retroviral sequences. Genomic blotting, employing a flanking cellular DNA probe derived from a member of this family, revealed a similar array of reactive bands in both humans and chimpanzees, indicating that an amplification event involving retroviral and associated cellular DNA sequences occurred before the evolutionary separation of these two primates. Southern analyses of restricted somatic cell hybrid DNA preparations suggested that endogenous retroviral segments are widely dispersed in the human genome and that amplification …

Reduction Of External Suspensions Through The Use Of An Effective Administrative Discipline Plan, Sharon Hill Shaulis
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author developed and implemented a model program to reduce the number of external suspensions in a middle school. The program's aims were to make sure that disciplinary actions such as suspension did not interfere with a handicapped student's rights to an appropriate education, and to reduce the total number of external suspensions focusing on exceptional students.
The program contained three basic components: a suspension module, suspension red,1ction techniques, and computerizing data base management of all suspension data. After school staff were inserviced on proper suspension procedures a consistent administrative discipline plan was implemented. This plan consisted of non-violent crisis …

An Analysis Of Socio-Psychological Factors Affecting Marine Corps Recruit Training Attrition, Howard J. Christenson
An Analysis Of Socio-Psychological Factors Affecting Marine Corps Recruit Training Attrition, Howard J. Christenson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The ability of the Department of Defense to recruit and retain adequate members in the All Volunteer Force constitutes a significant political, economic, and social issue. As the economy improves, recruitment and retention of enlisted personnel challenge military planners. High attrition rates of the past indicate that the full potential of recruits is not being achieved.
Each year, over 40,000 youth enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Of this number, approximately 88 percent successfully meet the demands of recruit training and graduate from one of two Marine Corps Recruit Training Depots located at San Diego, California and Parris Island, …

The drinking behavior of 96 male normal drinking college students was assessed after they viewed a videotape of a popular prime-time television program complete with advertisements. Different versions of the videotape were used to evaluate the effects of a television program with and without alcohol scenes as crossed with the effects of three different types of advertisements (i.e., beer, nonalcoholic beverages and food). After viewing the videotape, the subjects, who were led to believe that they were participating in two separate and unrelated sets of experimental procedures, were asked to perform a taste rating of light beers, which actually provided …
