Remediating Reading Skills - Utilizing Self-Awareness Through An Intensive Whole Language Approach, Gerardine K. Cochran
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Reading remediation needs of second graders were addressed through an intensive whole language approach with particular emphasis on self-awareness. Teacher recommendations and basal scores were used to identify seven at-risk second grade students. Students attended a class for an hour daily during which main idea, cause and effect, and drawing conclusions were the skills targeted. Over the ten week implementation period, students focused on themselves, peer relationships and various aspects of the school.
The students' overall academic performances exceeded expectations. In the area of main idea, five of the seven students scored 80% and above. In cause and effect skills, …

Devising And Executing Training Sessions For Parents In Critical Thinking, Joyce V. Galgano
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This project attempted to show the increased achievement of second grade students whose parents learned and applied critical thinking techniques. The implementation component encompassed a ten week segment: five training sessions and five written newsletters for parents. Without any changes in educational programs, teaching techniques or new materials in the classroom, students increased in achievement as measured and evaluated in three areas. Area I, content, was measured by the Cognitive Abilities Test (Riverside Publications), a professionally prepared test designed to assess the development of cognitive abilities related to verbal, non-verbal and quantitative reasoning and problem solving. Area II, strategy, was …
Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby
Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
California community college reform legislation enacted in August 1988 was predicated on the willingness of the colleges to assume an increasingly more prominent role in local, regional, and statewide economic development. Many colleges, especially small community colleges, have not clearly defined their potential role as a catalyst and resource for economic development.
This study had three primary purposes related to the role of the community college in economic development. First, the results of this study should assist administrators at Crafton Hills College, a small two-year public community college in southern California, in defining and implementing the college's economic development mission …

Interchromosomal translocations within lymphoid neoplasms frequently involve the antigen receptor genes. We cloned the breakpoints of the t(11;14)(p15;q11) in a CD3-negative T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line (RPMI 8402) in order to identify new genes potentially involved in T-cell neoplasia. An extensive comparison of both breakpoints and their germ line counterparts indicated that an inadvertant recombinase-mediated break at chromosome segment 11p15 recombined with the delta T-cell receptor at 14q11. The derivative 11 breakpoint resembles a coding joint in which 11p15 rather than a variable region was introduced 5' to a Dδ1Dδ2Jδ1 intermediate rearrangement. Conversely, the …

Relating The Mole Concept And Fundamental Mathematics, Kenneth L. Phillips
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The high percentage of students with difficulty in solving free-response problems related to the mole concept was addressed by implementation of reading skill strategies and computer aided instruction. Frayer models, semantic mapping and graphic organizers from Reading in the Content Area (RICA) were employed to increase student understanding of the scientific principles involved. Computers and a variety of computer programs from COMPress and Knowledge Factory were used by the target group for review, drill, and practice in relating their math skills to solving problems. The results indicated a considerable increase in the ability to solve problems related to the mole …

Identifying Risk Factors For Reading Failure As An Aid To Prediction And Prevention Of Retention In The Second Grade, Valerie G. Ballerini
Identifying Risk Factors For Reading Failure As An Aid To Prediction And Prevention Of Retention In The Second Grade, Valerie G. Ballerini
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In order to identify students at risk of failure in reading, a list was compiled in the school of factors held in common by students who had previously been retained in second grade. Cumulative folders were examined in order to gather the necessary data. At least 80 percent of the students in this part of the study were male, did not live with both parents, had failed the reading comprehension section of a local first grade minimum level skills test, and had visual sequential memory deficits. Other contributing factors were also identified. Using these factors, the records of 60 students …
Development Of Management Strategies For Improving Classroom Behavior Of At-Risk Students Through The Teaching Of Behavior, Mary K. Gardner
Development Of Management Strategies For Improving Classroom Behavior Of At-Risk Students Through The Teaching Of Behavior, Mary K. Gardner
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Because prevention is always cheaper than remediation, a proactive approach to dropout prevention was the focus of the practicum. Inappropriate classroom behavior was identified as the major cause at-risk students drop out of school as reflected in the/ number of referrals to the Dean of Students for inappropriate classroom behavior. To assist the at-risk students in the development of more appropriate classroom behaviors, the target teacher received instruction and feedback on how to task analyze, teach, and reinforce appropriate behavior followed by formative and summative evaluations of the application of these skills in the classroom. The students were directly taught …

The Development Of A Stress Management Training Program For Faculty On The Prevention And Recovery Of Burnout, Joseph W. Laing
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Academic burnout and stress are experienced widely at both small and large private and public post-secondary institutions. This is perhaps due to the interpersonal relationships and expectations essential to academe. Faculty members at West Coast Christian College are not immune to potential sources of academic stress.
The purpose of this study was to develop a stress management program for faculty at West Coast Christian College on the prevention and recovery of burnout. A review of the literature led to the employment of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) Educators Survey to assess faculty burnout; the results were then used to guide …

Analysis Of The Educational Objectives Of Adult Learners, Lowell Roberts
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this study was to identify the common educational objectives of Empire state College students. Understanding the goals of adult learners, the student body of Empire state, is important, since adult students tend to be highly purposive. Objectives were examined by type and for differences that may result from area of residence and gender. Four hundred and thirty-seven entering students were asked to indicate the importance of 19 goal statements as reflecting their educational objectives. Except for a slight underrepresentation of rural students, the respondents were representative of the Empire State student population and of their geographic and …

Developing A Basic Introduction To Fiber Optics Principles And Applications, David C. Onuoha
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A new civilization (the information Age or the Electronic Era) is emerging in the United States of America. The new age j s characterized by a rapidly-changing technology; hence, general knowledge in a field of study soon becomes part of core curriculum in that field of study. In order to survive in the emerging information society, one has to be willing to continually retrain. There is a need to constantly review and update curriculum (particularly in vocational programs).
The problem of this practicum was to highlight the rapidly- advancing Fiber Optics technology and to underscore the need for electronics programs …
A Management System For Parental Reinforcement Of Reading Skills For First Grade Chapter I Students, Karen R. Kroeger
A Management System For Parental Reinforcement Of Reading Skills For First Grade Chapter I Students, Karen R. Kroeger
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Many Chapter I first grade students, at the practicum site, were not meeting pupil progression standards in reading and had already been retained in kindergarten or first grade. As a result, they would be administratively placed in second grade while still below the beginning second grade reading level. This statement was confirmed by the scores on a reading assessment test. In order to enhance the mastery of these required reading skills, a tutorial program was designed to train parents in methods which helped the children to improve their basic reading skills. The results of this practicum showed that the students …

Twenty-five years in the life of a university is a short period of time. Yet, in its first twenty-five years, Nova University has been able to respond to major changes in American society. After Sputnik was launched in 1957, our government and our educational system placed a high priority on science and technology. President Kennedy declared that we would place a man on the moon within a decade.
Nova University of Advanced Technology was conceived in response to the national agenda. In the mid-1960s, President Johnson launched the Great Society, which began to take effect in the late 1960s …
