An Analysis Of The Relationships Between Selected Variables Affecting The School Nurses’ Role In Working With Students With Handicaps, Gail Synoground Jul 1990

An Analysis Of The Relationships Between Selected Variables Affecting The School Nurses’ Role In Working With Students With Handicaps, Gail Synoground

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to analyze relationships between selected role theory variables and the school nurse's role in working with students with handicapping conditions. Public Law 94-142 mandates that all students be educated in the least restrictive environment possible, resulting in enrollment of students with disabilities and other health impairments that often require special health services. This mandate has necessitated that school nurses re-evaluate their roles in assisting handicapped students to receive an appropriate education. Further, there is some question as to the educational needs and preparation of school nurses to fulfill their responsibilities in the …

Enrolling The International English As A Second Language Student In Nova University’S Programs For Higher Education: Implications For The Future, Daniel Lea Carlson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Since 1972, Programs for Higher Education at Nova University has offered a field-based Ed.D. program to clusters of students in various locations around the United States. In 1985, a regional cluster was designed to meet the needs of interested prospective students who were not located close enough to the existing local clusters to participate in the program. As the regional cluster grew, it was joined by a number of international students who live in other countries and for whom English is a second or third language.

Enrollment of international ESL students raised questions regarding the level of English proficiency needed …

A Creative Thinking Approach To Developing A Guide To Practical And Effective Methods Of Evaluating Student Writing Assignments, Carole L. Duval

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The high level o frustration voiced by secondary English teachers regarding the lack of resources available for evaluating student writing assignments was addressed by utilizing a quality circle approach to brainstorm and refine various methods of evaluation. Secondary English teachers participated in the creation of the Operation Relief handbook under the guidance of the quality circle coordinator. The results of the creation and dissemination of this handbook indicated a decrease in the level of frustration. The results of this approach provide significant information on the need for teacher input regarding problem solutions. It was concluded that the use of the …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).

The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

The Effects Of Modeling And Repeated Taped Reading Instruction On The Learning Disabled Child As Ways To Improve Reading Comprehension Fluency And Word Recognition, Anne L. Rokicki

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum addressed the need to develop an alternative method of teaching reading to learning disabled students who have experienced little success in this area. The necessity for implementation was documented by students' 1989 scores on the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Basic Skills, reading portion. A baseline of students’ pre-intervention performance in oral reading, comprehension, and word recognition both in context and in isolation was established. These scores were compared with post-intervention scores and with students' 1990 scores on the Brigance Test, reading portion. The Heathington Attitude Scale was administered pre and post intervention to determine positive changes in students’ …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

During the nineties, increasing attention is being paid to the problem of impairment in nurses. The antecedents to professional impairment were analyzed in this study. Included in the study was exploration of the levels of burnout, depression, co-dependency and alcohol use in sophomore level community college nursing students. These four variables were analyzed in relationship to demographic data regarding the students, specifically, activities related to self-care.

The following hypotheses were tested: (1) there was no significant difference on the mean scores for burnout, depression and co-dependency, (2) there was no significant difference in the mean scores on burnout, depression, co-dependency …

Developing And Implementing A Shared Decision-Making Model For School Improvement Consistent With The Climate Of A Rural School System, Doris F. Dunn Jun 1990

Developing And Implementing A Shared Decision-Making Model For School Improvement Consistent With The Climate Of A Rural School System, Doris F. Dunn

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a shared decision-making model for school improvement which is consistent with a rural environment. Originally, informal interviews documented a discrepancy in perceptions about roles, change and shared decision-making planning. A formal survey administered in mid-October, 1988, produced specific data about knowledge and attitudes toward shared decision-making planning, the elements of shared decision-making that principals and teachers saw in roles and the differences between the two groups.

Analysis of the probable causes revealed that teachers felt left out of the decision-making process. Additionally, teachers and principals expressed opinion differences in the degree of "desired" and "actual" participation of …

Slippery Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean Arising Due To Daytime Solar Heating, Vladimir N. Kudryavtsev, Alexander Soloviev May 1990

Slippery Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean Arising Due To Daytime Solar Heating, Vladimir N. Kudryavtsev, Alexander Soloviev

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Measurements made in the Equatorial Atlantic during the 35th cruise of the R/V Akademic Vernadsky using a free-rising profiler and drifters revealed a near-surface slippery layer of the ocean arising due to daytime solar heating. The solar heating warms and stabilizes the surface layer of the ocean. This suppresses turbulent exchange and limits the penetration depth of the wind-induced turbulent mixing. The heated near-surface layer is then slipping over the underlying water practically without friction. At daytime warming of 1°C the resistance coefficient in the upper 5-m ocean, Cu = (U*/ΔUs)2 became …

Biology Faculty Articles

The extent and progression of exposure to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus in the cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus, was monitored by a world-wide serological survey with indirect fluorescent antibody titers to coronavirus. The indirect fluorescent antibody assay was validated by Western blots, which showed that all indirect fluorescent antibody-positive cheetah sera detected both domestic cat and cheetah coronavirus structural proteins. There was a poor correlation between indirect fluorescent antibody results and the presence of coronaviruslike particles in cheetah feces, suggesting that electron microscopic detection of shed particles may not be an easily interpreted diagnostic parameter for FIP disease. Low, but …

Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino May 1990

Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes an alternative program for building self-love among Native American para-alcoholic, elementary school age children. There is a need to increase awareness of the para- alcoholic behaviors existing in young Native American students. The epidemic of alcoholism on the reservation affects all the children and increases the need for nurturing and love. In a culture where touch is limited, prevention strategies are important. The dysfunctional home and community environment should not interfere in a child's ability to learn. Co-dependent children deal daily with their public self and real self, and need outlets to relieve their tensions. The Love …
