Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
The benefits of the inland retention of freshwaters in South Florida are indisputable. During periods of prolonged drought, the maintenance of a higher groundwater table, which benefits terrestrial vegetation and retards saltwater intrusion, is clearly preferable to the alternative of discharging up to 400,000 gallons of freshwater per day into the ocean.
Therefore, the only objections to the retention of treated sewage effluent in an inland lime-rock pit, with the physical, chemical and biologic characteristics of our pits, would have to do with possible detrimental effects to public health or the environment. The major public health concern involves the possible …

A Case Study Of The Weaknesses In Postsecondary Mathematics Problem Solving And A Program To Eliminate Such Deficiencies, Robert E. Cinnamond
A Case Study Of The Weaknesses In Postsecondary Mathematics Problem Solving And A Program To Eliminate Such Deficiencies, Robert E. Cinnamond
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to investigate the weaknesses in post-secondary mathematics problem solving and to develop an instructional design that would help mathematics majors become better problem solvers. A case study was conducted including an extensive literary search to determine which strategies were needed to enhance problem solving. Three basic research restrictions were examined: 1. Why do Brescia mathematics majors fail to develop correct cognitive strategy selection during their normal course of study. 2. How can an appropriate course of study be designed to teach proper cognitive strategy selection? 3. How can an appropriate course …

Improving School Discipline At Seaford Middle School Through An Advisement Program, Cynthia T. Spicer
Improving School Discipline At Seaford Middle School Through An Advisement Program, Cynthia T. Spicer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes use of a teacher-student advisement program for the improvement of school discipline in an eastern middle school. Evidence supporting school discipline being a problem included in a high number of student suspensions. The annual school needs assessment listed the improvement of school discipline as a priority. Teachers and parents believed that school discipline needed improvement.
The following existing conditions were evident from analysis of the problem. There was no consistent program of counseling and follow-up for suspended students. Administrators inconsistently followed school discipline procedures. Effective classroom management practices were not consistently used by teachers. Students felt alienated. …

The first segment of this report describes a program for improving the awareness of youth gangs in our schools and in the community. The program was designed to team school personnel with law enforcement agencies and other allied groups in a systematic plan to increase the awareness of parents, school staff, and members of the community of youth gangs and their activities in Broward County, Florida. In a survey of teachers and administrators during a Youth Gang Conference which was held in February of 1989, it was revealed that the majority of the participants indicated a need to be trained …
Improving Student Writing Performance At A Junior High School Through A School-Wide Writing Project, Paul G. Ondeck
Improving Student Writing Performance At A Junior High School Through A School-Wide Writing Project, Paul G. Ondeck
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes a program for improving the writing performance of junior high school students in an urban school with a diverse student population. The problem noted was that student performance had been declining in the area of writing, both in content as measured by the California Assessment Program, and in the correct usage of writing conventions as measured by the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills.
Classroom observations and teacher interviews indicated that there was no consistency of instruction in the English Department's writing program, either between classes within the same grade level or between grade levels. The range of …

Carbonate Deposits In Marine Fish Intestines: A New Source Of Biomineralization, Patrick J. Walsh, Patricia Blackwelder, Kenneth A. Gill, Eva Danulat, Thomas P. Mommsen
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Marine teleostean fish are hypo-osmotic to seawater. As part of a multiorgan osmoregulatory strategy they drink seawater and selectively absorb water and minerals across the intestinal epithelium. Notably, divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2-) are left behind. We report here that in the gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta, the ionic by-products of osmoregulation in the intestine contribute to de novo formation of a carbonate mineral, tentatively identified as calcian kutnohorite. Our data suggest that intestinal mineralization is a general feature of osmoregulation in marine teleosts and that this process is an unrecognized and possibly substantial source of marine …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Remedial Program For High Risk Students Attending The Basic Skills Education Program At Fort Bragg, Alexandrine P. Nash
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Army Education Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, has enrolled a large number of soldiers who are academically deficient in reading and mathematical skills in the Basic Skills Education Program (BSEP). Although a verbal courses of the BSEP are offered at Fort Bragg during the yeas, a great number of students is not raise their initial general technical scores (GT) to the minimum acceptable level of 100, and many students do not even complete the course. Because of the complexity of military operations, the technical nature of equipment and communication, and the current political and economic situation that calls …

Redistricting The Elementary School Population In The Westfield, Massachusetts Public Schools, Thomas Y. Mcdowell Ii
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes a project designed around the reorganization of the elementary school population in Westfield, Massachusetts. Previous to this plan, the elementary school population attended school in one setting that housed grades K-4, and were moved to another setting for grades five and six. A long range plan was needed to replace obsolete facilities and respond to continued community growth. The purpose of the redistricting plan was to eliminate yearly redistricting and to prevent future problems in the assignment or elementary school students
A long range plan was developed by the superintendent of schools and adopted by the school …
