The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Student Guide Incorporating A Conceptual Framework In A Nursing Program Curriculum., Nancy Cowan
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The conceptual framework used by Chabot College's Associate. Degree nursing program was criticized by the State Board of Nursing and by the nursing students as lacking in clarity and consistency in faculty implementation. The faculty subsequently discussed the need to formalized the conceptual framework and its implementation into a written guide book for use by both faculty and students. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a guide book that would incorporate the conceptual framework of the nursing program's curriculum.
The guide book was developed by the nursing faculty. Plans for its distribution to faculty and …

Quality Of Life Indicators For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Former Vr Clients, Randolph L. Mowry
Quality Of Life Indicators For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Former Vr Clients, Randolph L. Mowry
JADARA
The success of vocational rehabilitation (VR) services is often measured by the percent of successful closures and employment rates at closure. However, these measures may not present a broad enough picture of the impact of these services, particularly since the ultimate goal of VR is lifelong adjustment for the individual. This paper presents data relating to the perceptions of quality of life for deaf and hard-of-hearing rehabilitants 314 years after closure. These data highlight objective and subjective criteria to describe the long-term adjustment of these rehabilitants. Discussion describes some of the contradictions inherent between objective and subjective data, and makes …
An Ecological Perspective On Deafness, Michael A. Harvey, Barry Dym
An Ecological Perspective On Deafness, Michael A. Harvey, Barry Dym
JADARA
This paper offers an ecological view of deaf ness to assist rehabilitation counselors and clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of problems that deaf persons may present. An ecological perspective identifies the many hierarchically arranged, biopsychhsocial levels which influence the development of deaf persons. It further identifies the sequences of interaction (the exchanges of information) which occur both within and between levels, and which include the creation, labeling and reifying of symptoms. The organization of ecological fields is described by a cybernetic model from the discipline of family therapy. A detailed case example is presented.
The Relationship Of Non-Verbal Intelligence Measures To Academic Achievement Among Deaf Adolescents, Nicholaus Paal, Susan Skinner, Carl Reddig
The Relationship Of Non-Verbal Intelligence Measures To Academic Achievement Among Deaf Adolescents, Nicholaus Paal, Susan Skinner, Carl Reddig
JADARA
This study examined the correlations between academic achievement and two tests of none verbal intelligence often used with the deaf population, the Hiskey-Nebraska Test of Learning Aptitude (H-NTLA) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) Performance Scale, in a sample of 35 deaf high school students. Both tests correlated significantly positively with measures of reading comprehension and mathematical calculation and were, in fact, in the same range as typical correlations between overall IQ and achievement in the hearing population. The WAIS-R Performance Scales correlated significantly higher with reading comprehension than did the H-NTLA. The results seem to validate the use …
A Process To Credential The Registered Nurse As First Assistant During Surgery, Marilyn A. Hunter
A Process To Credential The Registered Nurse As First Assistant During Surgery, Marilyn A. Hunter
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The evolution of contemporary medical practice over the past 30 years is extraordinary. This researcher has observed medical practitioners with many years of preparation in the role as first assistant to the surgeon. When phrases as "cost effective and cost containment" were verbalized it was obvious radical changes were to be made. As time went by non-physicians were employed as first assistants. These individuals attained certification by going through rigorous training programs for surgical assistants. Registered nurses were assigned to assist the surgeons in surgery. An on-the-job training was taking place. Unfortunately, only the practical application of surgical assisting was …

Integrated Online Media Management Systems For Media Centers: A Model For Selection And Effective Use, Nancy R. Keating
Integrated Online Media Management Systems For Media Centers: A Model For Selection And Effective Use, Nancy R. Keating
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The researcher proposed to advice in the selection of an Integrated Online Library System (IOLS) for use in the 103 school media centers in the Palm Beach County Schools, Florida. This was accomplished by evaluating the two finalists of those vendors who answered the district's Request for Proposal (RFP). Of the five vendors who responded to the RFP. CLSI and SIRSI were selected as the systems most likely to meet the needs of the media centers of the school district.
An overview and definition of IOLS was first discussed. This overview then related itself to the needs of the school …

A Module To Educate Elementary School Staff On How To Implement The Peace Studies Curriculum In Their Buildings, Clement L. Magner
A Module To Educate Elementary School Staff On How To Implement The Peace Studies Curriculum In Their Buildings, Clement L. Magner
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Milwaukee Board of School Directors mandated that a Peace Studies Curriculum be implemented in all grades of all Milwaukee public elementary schools. The purpose of the Peace Studies Curriculum was to teach elementary students how to understand conflict and how to respond to conflicts in their lives in a non- violent manner.
An informal survey revealed that the elementary teachers were not implementing the Peace Studies Curriculum in their classrooms because they did not feel adequately prepared to do so. Incidents of acting out and violent behavior continued to increase.
There was a need to educate the elementary teachers …
Recreation Strategies For The Retention Of First-Semester College Students, Richard P. Chesterman
Recreation Strategies For The Retention Of First-Semester College Students, Richard P. Chesterman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The high dropout rate of first-semester freshmen in a small, church-related college was addressed by the implementation of an organized recreation/activity strategy. This strategy was designed to provide appropriate entertainment and to contribute to a positive environment in order to integrate first-semester freshmen into the college environment and thereby increase retention. Evaluation instruments measured student--as well as faculty, staff, and administration--satisfaction with the campus environment and social/recreational activities. Moreover participation was monitored to assess the level of involvement.
The writer concluded that the greater the level of participation in relevant organized activities emphasizing social integration, the greater the level of …
A Study Of The Feasibility Of The Use Of Tele Presentation Debating In High School Education, Albert Preston Weeks
A Study Of The Feasibility Of The Use Of Tele Presentation Debating In High School Education, Albert Preston Weeks
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The target school area has experienced a steady decline in the number of schools actively involved in extracurricular competitive debate despite rapid growth in the number of schools in the district. Numerous problems exist. Liability and travel time are cited as critical reasons for school nonparticipation.
Telepresentation Debating eliminates these problems. The feasibility of maintaining the integrity of the debate process was tested by simulating a televised debate among three separate schools in the target area called Telepresentation Debating. Selected teachers, Judges and students evaluated the success of the experiment, declaring telepresentation debating to be a viable solution to present …

A Comparison Of Academic Achievement Between Students Participating In A Study Skills Workshop And Non-Participants In A School Of Nursing., Jennie Ann Stone
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This study investigated the relationship between levels of self-esteem of senior students in a school of nursing and a measure of professional achievement the National Council Licensure Emanation for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The hypothesis tested was that there would be a significant relationship between scores on the Self-Esteem Index (S.E.I.) and final scores achieved by seniors on the NCLEX-RN. Thirty senior students comprised the research population. The independent variable, self-esteem, was quantified into four categories (negative, low, moderate, high), by using the S.E.I., and the dependent variable was operationalized as the score achieved on the NCLEX-RN. The Pearson Correlation statistic …
