The Development And Implementation Of A Program To Improve Critical Thinking Skills And Language Awareness In Advanced Placement Students, Denise C. Wenner
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The lack of critical thinking skills in students in an Advanced Placement Language and Composition class was addressed by the implementation of a program which included instruction in: abstractions and concretions, denotation and informative and affective language, tone, deductive and inductive reasoning, the language of persuasion, and political rhetoric. The students researched the rhetoric of the presidential campaign of 1988, and assignments focused on the campaign and the effect of language on the outcome of the election. The subject of tone as an important element in the development of critical consciousness was discussed. Students then proceeded to apply the concept …

Peer Counseling In The Elementary School: Promoting Personal And Academic Growth Through Positive Relationships Thereby Increasing Self-Esteem And Self-Concept, Debra J. Lieberman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The effects of a peer counseling program on the elementary school level was studied to determine if positive relationships would promote personal and academic growth thereby increasing self-esteem and self-concept. The project was implemented in three phases: selection and training of 15 fourth and fifth grade students, implementation of special projects (i.e., counseling, tutoring, meeters and greeters, big brother/big sister), and evaluation. The 15 students were trained in the areas of facilitative responding, effective listening skills, helping characteristics, problem solving techniques, maintaining positive relationships, awareness of feelings, scheduling, and maintenance of logs. Evaluation included pre and post attitude surveys of …

Identifying Risk Factors For Reading Failure As An Aid To Prediction And Prevention Of Retention In The Second Grade, Valerie G. Ballerini
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In order to identify students at risk of failure in reading, a list was compiled in the school of factors held in common by students who had previously been retained in second grade. Cumulative folders were examined in order to gather the necessary data. At least 80 percent of the students in this part of the study were male, did not live with both parents, had failed the reading comprehension section of a local first grade minimum level skills test, and had visual sequential memory deficits. Other contributing factors were also identified. Using these factors, the records of 60 students …

The Use Of The College-Level Academic Skills Test For The Nontraditional Community College Student., Harry T. Albertson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In Florida, there is the anomaly of a student successfully completing a prescribed curriculum leading to the associate in arts degree and having the degree and access to the upper division delayed or denied because of an inability to pass a four-hour exam. The exam is called the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), and recent studies postulating biases within the Competency standards of the test et concern about statistically significant score differences between certain populations have raised issues about the test performance of nontraditional students.
Succinctly, this study utilized quasi-experimental techniques to isolate the performance of adult students. female students, …

Developing A Basic Introduction To Fiber Optics Principles And Applications, David C. Onuoha
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A new civilization (the information Age or the Electronic Era) is emerging in the United States of America. The new age j s characterized by a rapidly-changing technology; hence, general knowledge in a field of study soon becomes part of core curriculum in that field of study. In order to survive in the emerging information society, one has to be willing to continually retrain. There is a need to constantly review and update curriculum (particularly in vocational programs).
The problem of this practicum was to highlight the rapidly- advancing Fiber Optics technology and to underscore the need for electronics programs …

The purpose of this study was to identify the common educational objectives of Empire state College students. Objectives were examined by type and for differences that may result from area of residence and gender. Four hundred and thirty-seven entering students were asked to indicate the importance of 19 goal statements as reflecting their educational objectives. Except for a slight underrepresentation of rural students, the respondents were representative of the Empire State student population and of their geographic and …

Four Species Of Synopiidae From The Caribbean Region (Crustacea: Amphipoda), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Synopia ultramarina is redescribed from the Gulf Stream and the Florida Keys and comments are made on the tangled taxonomy in Synopia. Tiron bellairsi, originally described from Barbados, is reported from Belize, at the opposite side of the Caribbean Basin. Garosyrrhoe bigarra, a Pacific species, is also reported from Belize, but no clear subspecific differences are detected as yet between Pacific and Atlantic populations.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
A new species Ampelisca burkei, from Florida, is described. This species appears to be very close to A. lobata Holmes, from the eastern Pacific Ocean, but differs in the shape and setation of article 4 on pereopod 7, and the presence of an anteroventral spine-seta on article 5 of pereopod 7.

The writer provided a two-day workshop which gave teachers from different communities the opportunity to share teaching strategies and techniques, plan in groups, share materials, and problem-solve together. The writer provided follow-up through classroom visits with each teacher.
The results of the practicum were positive. Analysis of the data revealed that all of the 15 …
Implementing A K-6 Before School Latchkey Program With Quality Activities For Elementary Students, Constance Joy Stevenson
Implementing A K-6 Before School Latchkey Program With Quality Activities For Elementary Students, Constance Joy Stevenson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This program was designed to provide before-school quality activities for K-6 elementary students arriving on school property an hour before school officially begins. The lack of such a program resulted in many students lingering unsupervised on school property creating disturbing noise levels and discarding trash that littered the school grounds. The literature review did not describe many morning latchkey programs. Most references addressed after-school programs and the reasons there are so many latchkey children.
The writer's goals were: (1) to eliminate the number of students lingering unsupervised in the early morning hours of school property; (2) to eliminate loud noise …
