Dna Recombination And Natural Selection Pressure Sustain Genetic Sequence Diversity Of The Feline Mhc Class I Genes, Naoya Yuhki, Stephen J. O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
Sequence comparisons of seven distinct MHC class I cDNA clones revealed that feline class I molecules have a remarkable similarity to human HLA genes in their organization of functional domains as well as in the nonrandom partitioning of genetic variability according to the functional constraints ascribed to different regions of the MHC molecule. The distribution of the pattern of sequence polymorphism in the cat as compared with genetic diversity of human and mouse class I genes provides evidence for four coordinate factors that contribute to the origin and sustenance of abundant allele diversity that characterizes the MHC in the species. …

Comparing Treatment Effects Of Computer-Enhanced Instruction And Traditional Instruction In Mathematics At New York City Technical College, Johanna Ellner
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
At New York City Technical College (City Tech), the high failure ad attribution rate in a course entitled Introduction to Mathematical Analysis (MA 185) is affecting students’ career goals. Most students must successfully complete this basic college level intermediate algebra and trigonometry course to graduate. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the implementation of a new computer enhanced instructional design into the graphics portion of the MA 185 curriculum increases students success rate.
Prior to implementing computer-enhanced instruction (CEI), workshops were conducted for mathematics faculty members. A call for volunteers determined that twelve instruction were interested in …
Enrolling The International English As A Second Language Student In Nova University’S Programs For Higher Education: Implications For The Future, Daniel Lea Carlson
Enrolling The International English As A Second Language Student In Nova University’S Programs For Higher Education: Implications For The Future, Daniel Lea Carlson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Since 1972, Programs for Higher Education at Nova University has offered a field-based Ed.D. program to clusters of students in various locations around the United States. In 1985, a regional cluster was designed to meet the needs of interested prospective students who were not located close enough to the existing local clusters to participate in the program. As the regional cluster grew, it was joined by a number of international students who live in other countries and for whom English is a second or third language.
Enrollment of international ESL students raised questions regarding the level of English proficiency needed …
A Comparative Analysis Of Student Success On The College Level Academic Skills Test When Instructor Characteristics Are Considered, Anna M. Puzsik
A Comparative Analysis Of Student Success On The College Level Academic Skills Test When Instructor Characteristics Are Considered, Anna M. Puzsik
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The tremendous increase of part-time faculty members has been well documented in recent years and continued growth trends are predicted. From 1970 to 1980, part-time faculty members increased faster than full-time faculty and recent studies estimate that at least one in every three faculty members is employed part-time. While the use of adjunct faculty has helped many colleges adjust to uncertain and fluctuating funding patterns, the instructional efficacy of the use of adjunct faculty may be questioned.
In Florida, this nationwide trend is of particular importance since students must take and pass a test of college-level computation and communication skills …
A Creative Thinking Approach To Developing A Guide To Practical And Effective Methods Of Evaluating Student Writing Assignments, Carole L. Duval
A Creative Thinking Approach To Developing A Guide To Practical And Effective Methods Of Evaluating Student Writing Assignments, Carole L. Duval

The high level o frustration voiced by secondary English teachers regarding the lack of resources available for evaluating student writing assignments was addressed by utilizing a quality circle approach to brainstorm and refine various methods of evaluation. Secondary English teachers participated in the creation of the Operation Relief handbook under the guidance of the quality circle coordinator. The results of the creation and dissemination of this handbook indicated a decrease in the level of frustration. The results of this approach provide significant information on the need for teacher input regarding problem solutions. It was concluded that the use of the …
The Effects Of Modeling And Repeated Taped Reading Instruction On The Learning Disabled Child As Ways To Improve Reading Comprehension Fluency And Word Recognition, Anne L. Rokicki
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum addressed the need to develop an alternative method of teaching reading to learning disabled students who have experienced little success in this area. The necessity for implementation was documented by students' 1989 scores on the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Basic Skills, reading portion. A baseline of students’ pre-intervention performance in oral reading, comprehension, and word recognition both in context and in isolation was established. These scores were compared with post-intervention scores and with students' 1990 scores on the Brigance Test, reading portion. The Heathington Attitude Scale was administered pre and post intervention to determine positive changes in students’ …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).
The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …
A Computer Program To Encourage Middle School Children To Read During Leisure Time, Barbara C. Mareck
A Computer Program To Encourage Middle School Children To Read During Leisure Time, Barbara C. Mareck
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The excessive failure to read during leisure time rate among the author's sixth reading classes was addressed by the Implementation of an computerized independent reading contest. The author used two theories, the computerized reading contest provides every student the opportunity to read and enter answers to questions independently improves reading skills and increase vocabulary and that every student, regardless of ability, can participate in the computer reading program. Fred Writer (Rogers, 1985) was modified to design a computer program to encourage middle school students to read during their leisure time. The students were encouraged on a weekly basis to visit …

Slippery Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean Arising Due To Daytime Solar Heating, Vladimir N. Kudryavtsev, Alexander Soloviev
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Measurements made in the Equatorial Atlantic during the 35th cruise of the R/V Akademic Vernadsky using a free-rising profiler and drifters revealed a near-surface slippery layer of the ocean arising due to daytime solar heating. The solar heating warms and stabilizes the surface layer of the ocean. This suppresses turbulent exchange and limits the penetration depth of the wind-induced turbulent mixing. The heated near-surface layer is then slipping over the underlying water practically without friction. At daytime warming of 1°C the resistance coefficient in the upper 5-m ocean, Cu = (U*/ΔUs)2 became …

The extent and progression of exposure to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus in the cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus, was monitored by a world-wide serological survey with indirect fluorescent antibody titers to coronavirus. The indirect fluorescent antibody assay was validated by Western blots, which showed that all indirect fluorescent antibody-positive cheetah sera detected both domestic cat and cheetah coronavirus structural proteins. There was a poor correlation between indirect fluorescent antibody results and the presence of coronaviruslike particles in cheetah feces, suggesting that electron microscopic detection of shed particles may not be an easily interpreted diagnostic parameter for FIP disease. Low, but …

Biozonation Of Deep-Water Lithoherms And Associated Hardgrounds In The Northeastern Straits Of Florida, Charles G. Messing, A. Conrad Neumann, Judith C. Lang
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Elongated carbonate mounds ("lithoherms") oriented parallel to prevailing northerly bottom currents at moderate depths (500-700 m) along the western margin of the Little Bahama Bank exhibit a consistent faunal zonation characterized by attached, suspension-feeding invertebrates. The four most abundant macroepibenthic groups (alcyonarians, crinoids, sponges and stylasterid hydrocorals) dominate all hard substrates examined except upcurrent ends and crests of lithoherms. We recognize three faunal zones on these mounds: a Coral Zone (Lophelia prolifera) restricted to the upcurrent end; a Zoanthid Zone (?Gerardia sp.) along upcurrent crests, and a Crinoid/Alcyonarian Zone along lithoherm flanks and downstream crests. Taxa characteristic of the latter …
