Podocerus Chelonophilus, A Testudinous Amphipod Newly Recorded From The Western Atlantic Ocean, James Darwin Thomas, J. L. Barnard

Podocerus chelonophilus (=P. cheloniae), an amphipod inhabiting the carapace of the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta, is reported for the first time from the western Atlantic Ocean.

Since 1978, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within its area of responsibility. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas of three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The loggerhead is listed as a threatened species, while the green and leatherback are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, 1973, and Chapter 370, F.S.

This practicum was designed in response to the increasing numbers of student behavior problems and subsequent suspension of mildly handicapped and at-risk middle school students. The goal was to implement a group intervention program teaching cognitive behavioral strategics to improve interpersonal problem-solving skills, as well as provide alternatives to current school disciplinary procedures.

The writer combined the video-assisted, cognitive behavioral “Think First” program designed by Dr. James Larson with a student court system to improve social competence, develop self-management and problem-solving techniques. This practicum was designed to incorporate the study of geography into a ninth grade world history with the aim of improving a student’s awareness of the influence of geography upon the historical development of ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. By means of a questionnaire and map tests prepared by the writer, it was determined that ninth grade world history students had little awareness of the influence of geography upon historical development in ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, and could not locate those places regarded as being historically significant in either of those two ancient civilizations.

This practicum was designed to assist middle school students in evaluating personal interest, attitude, and motivation toward science and science-related careers. In minimizing the pervasive and prevalent procrastination, students engaged in activities to formulate both future academic and career plans.

The writer secured science-related professionals to introduce specific career techniques that involved student interaction to gain exposure to a science-related career. Through journal writing the students evaluated and synthesized information relative to personal likes, dislikes and interests to develop plans for high school science courses and a possible career path.

The problem to be solved in this practicum was how to assist 73 high-risk youths found in five, low-level, science classes. The problem was caused by academic under-achievement, inappropriate behavior and a low-economic status. The writer designed and implemented several intervention strategies to help retain high-risk students in high school science class. There were five corollary objectives to improve students' academic achievement, increase student attendance and punctuality, reduce student office-referrals, and improve their conduct in the classroom.

This practicum was proposed to improve the motivational level of disaffected students by utilizing alternative learning strategies designed to match teaching style to the individual learning style of the student. The primary goal was to elevate the test scores on periodic, cumulative, and standardized tests in order to bring students to grade level. The secondary goal was to adjust the curriculum to meet the learning style of the slow learner. Subgoals included decreasing absenteeism, detention, and suspension. This practicum addressed the problem that school clinicians were unaware of the variety of behavior rating scales that help In the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD and other disorders that often coexist. The writer's goal was to provide a process to Introduce behavior rating scales to 73 school clinicians from 21 school districts to aid in identifying ADD/ADHO children and differentiate coexisting disorders.

This practicum focused upon the design and implementation of a body Image improvement program for severely emotionally disturbed (SED), latency-aged girls. Seven latency-aged girls In a self-contained, SED program participated one time per week In Individual art therapy and group sessions. The program Incorporated therapeutic art activities with verbal Interactions and utilized human growth films, cooperative learning techniques, and child care personnel from outside agencies.

The practicum addressed the need to educate school staff and professionals on attention disorders and develop a state-of-the-art referral process system. Untreated students with attention disorders exhibited poor study habits, academic failure, unacceptable behavior. and were subsequent high-at risk of completing high school The implications of untreated moderate-to-severe ADD/ADHD are that the taxpayers cannot afford the high com of failure.

This practicum endeavored to improve science laboratory instruction for elementary students. The major goal of the practicum was to facilitate laboratory use so that teachers would incorporate laboratory experiences as an integral component in science instruction.

To improve the instructional significance of the science laboratory, the writer developed and initiated a MAPS change process model (Motivation, Alternatives, Planning, Sharing) in collaboration with representative teachers. The committee acted in a leadership capacity to develop goal commitment, formulate strategic action plans, communicate a shared vision, resolve implementation obstacles and monitor progress.
