BACKGROUND: Raloxifene, a second-generation selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women is administered orally in the form of a tablet. The absolute bioavailability of the drug is only 2% because of extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism. Lipid-based formulations are reported to reduce the first-pass metabolism by promoting its lymphatic uptake. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present investigation, microemulsion and Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery System (SMEDDS) formulations of Raloxifene were prepared. The prepared formulations were characterized for drug loading, size, transparency, zeta potential, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and in vitro intestinal permeability. Constructive Noncooperation: Living In Truth, Mark A. Mattaini, Kristen Atkinson

Mohandas Gandhi often indicated that nonviolence was “a science,” and he appears to have meant this literally. Consistent with this vision, in this paper, we outline and apply principles of behavioral systems science, an emerging data-based approach to understanding the dynamics of complex cultural systems, to the practice of constructive noncooperation (Gandhi’s “constructive programme”). Although Gandhi emphasized that constructive action was the most important and potent of nonviolent strategic options, constructive alternatives have been the least developed in the literature of nonviolent struggle. The reconceptualization of constructive noncooperation in behavioral systems terms offered here suggests that rigorous analysis of Havel’s …

A large dataset of high-resolution photographic images of far wakes of a volunteer observing ship (Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas) has been acquired under various meteorological conditions and ship operation modes. This work presents the description of instrumentation, methodology, and the results of the experiment. Environmental and ship operation factors that affect appearance and geometric properties of ship wakes in photographic and satellite-based radar images have been analyzed. The photo imagery reveals an asymmetry of the wake depending on wind direction relative to the ship course. In addition, a good agreement between the averaged shape of the wakes …

Applying Grounded Theory To Weight Management Among Women: Making A Commitment To Healthy Eating, Christie Zunker, Nataliya Ivankova

In this study we developed a theory grounded in data from women who continued healthy eating behaviors after a weight management program. Participant recruitment was guided by theoretical sampling strategies for focus groups and individual interviews. Inclusion criteria were: African American or Caucasian women aged 30+ who lost > 5% of their body weight in a weight management program > year ago. Participants > 5% below their baseline weight were maintainers (n = 9); those above were non-maintainers (n = 14). We asked open-ended questions regarding healthy eating behaviors. The Qualitative Report
This article describes a mixed methods approach used to explore the experiences of adult family care home (AFCH) residents and informal caregivers (IC). A rationale is presented for using a mixed methods approach employing the sequential exploratory design with this poorly researched population. The unique challenges attendant to the sampling strategy with this population, and an iterative approach of data collection and data analysis are discussed. A summary of the data integration process and outcome is presented.

The objective of this article is to illustrate that text mining and qualitative research are epistemologically compatible. First, like many qualitative research approaches, such as grounded theory, text mining encourages open-mindedness and discourages preconceptions. Contrary to the popular belief that text mining is a linear and fully automated procedure, the text miner might add, delete, and revise the initial categories in an iterative fashion. Second, text mining is similar to content analysis, which also aims to extract common themes and threads by counting words. Nudibranchs are soft-bodied marine heterobranch gastropod molluscs which lack a shell and mantle cavity. The basic body plan is bilaterally symmetrical with an expanded notum, but in regards to other physical characteristics they exhibit a wide range of forms. Compared to other molluscs, evolutionarily the head and body became flattened and streamlined and tentacles have been lost or shifted to different areas of the body. Nudibranchs are found in many variations of size and color; despite the fact that these animals in general are noted for flamboyant colors and prominent external anatomical structures, many species rely upon a more cryptic …

A New Species Of Leucothoid Amphipod, Anamixis Bananarama, Sp. N., From Shallow Coral Reefs In French Polynesia (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Leucothoidae), James Darwin Thomas, Traudl Krapp-Shickel

Both leucomorph and anamorph developmental stages of Anamixis bananarama sp. n., are illustrated and described from shallow back reef environments of Moorea, French Polynesia. Distinguished by vestigial fi rst gnathopods that persist in post-transformational adult males, this is the second species in the genus to exhibit this unusual character. In other features such as coxae and second gnathopods A. bananarama sp. n. resembles other Pacific Plate endemics of Anamixis known from the region. Specific host association is not documented but suspected to be small calcareous asconoid sponges associated with coral rubble.

Exploring Identity Through Genetic And Genealogical Research: Development Of A Collaborative Course Between Humanities And Biology, James Doan, Emily F. Schmitt Lavin
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
In this paper, data from student projects completed in their HONR 1000N: Genetics and Genealogy course, taught during winter 2010, are presented. Students traced their deep ancestry through mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA analysis, as well as more recent ancestry, using genealogical databases and family histories. Frequently, students were challenged or pleasantly surprised by the information they gleaned. Genetic and genealogical research can provide clues to one’s identity and ethnic background, as well as potential medical conditions.

Group selection, which was once widely rejected as a significant evolutionary force, is now accepted by all who seriously study the subject. There is still widespread confusion about group selection, however, not only among students and the general public, but among professional evolutionists who do not directly study the subject. We list eight criticisms that are frequently invoked against group selection, which can be permanently laid to rest based upon current knowledge. One main objective of organic chemistry courses is to show students how much of a desired organic product is synthesized in the reaction mixture. Here, we report how a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument can be applied to a set of common organic chemistry experiments for identifying the main product, any minor product(s) and quantifying the product yield. GC-MS is a powerful analytical instrumentation tool capable of detecting, identifying and quantifying many volatile organic compounds. The cost of a hotel room is usually correlated to the quality of the hotel room and the quality of services provided during one’s stay; e.g. the cleanliness of the room and the thoroughness of the cleaning staff. The cleaner a hotel is the more desirable it is. The goal of this experiment was to analyze hotel cleanliness at the microscopic level to determine if pathogenic micro-organisms were present. This experiment explores the effect that speed-reading has on the inferences made while reading texts. More specifically it will compare comprehension and inferences made between participants that read at a normal rate and participants that have been trained to read at a faster rate than normal. Speed-reading courses promise the ability to learn how to take in larger amounts of text and information than normal reading. Mercury-based preservatives including thimerosal, typically added to some vaccines, may pose health concerns as mercury toxicity has been implicated in many human diseases. In this study, microarray technology and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were used to examine the potential effects of a typical dose of thimerosal-containing vaccine (TCV) or thimerosal-free (TFV) pediatric flu vaccine on gene expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a model organism that shares roughly 30% of its genome with humans. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of categorization on our ability to remember events and objects. This is an important question because little research has tested the notion that the ability to categorize helps produce better memory. Morris & Baker-Ward (2007) studied a similar question when they examined whether having the vocabulary to describe an experience affected the ability to remember that experience. Sea pens (Pennatulidae) are sessile, benthic cnidarians that inhabit soft sediment, and rely on filter feeding to obtain energy. They have a central stalk (rachis) which contains secondary polyps for feeding. Since no previous data has been collected on their distribution, abundance or size in the SW Gulf of California, Mexico, benthic surveys were conducted at depths of 11.0 - 32.6 m near Isla San Fransiscito and El Pardito. Ethan is confronted with a tough decision: whether to tell the girl he loves how he really feels, or whether to accept the fact that she loves someone else and that Ethan will only be a friend in her eyes. Throughout the film, Ethan is driving in a car, and flashbacks of the night where he chose to be just a friend keep entering his mind. Mosquitoes are carriers of numerous diseases for instance, malaria and west-Nile virus. Lagenidium giganteum is a parasitic organism during larval stage that infects and kills mosquitoes. In time, this could be proven to be useful in bioengineering to create an environmentally safe insecticide. Molecular research was performed in order to determine the imperative genes in Lagenidium giganteum that hinder the development in mosquito larvae. A culture of Lagenidium giganteum was used to extract RNA and initiate a transcriptome analysis. Large scale sequencing led to the annotation of 20,000 transcripts. Bilingualism has been linked to enhanced cognitive abilities and these enhanced abilities are believed to be mediated by the same frontal lobe system that controls language output in bilinguals. Moreover, recent research suggests that this bilingual advantage may be moderated by degree of balance between the two languages such that those who are equally proficient in their two languages show the best performance on cognitive tasks compared to unbalanced bilinguals and monolinguals. For instance, results from one study revealed that balanced bilinguals showed significantly fewer errors on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) than unbalanced bilinguals. Thus, the purpose of …
