The Systemic Multigenerational Implications Of Education: Second-Generation Haitian- American College Graduates’ Perspectives, Daphney Farah Lundi
The Systemic Multigenerational Implications Of Education: Second-Generation Haitian- American College Graduates’ Perspectives, Daphney Farah Lundi
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Similar to other immigrant populations in the United States, Haitians have a migratory history of escaping from political turmoil, natural disasters, and extreme poverty (Zephir, 2004). However, Haitian Americans remain one of the underserved populations in the United States. Marginalized yet resilient, Haitian families in the U.S. continue to display strength in the face of adversity. Second-generation Haitian-American college graduates are the evidence of such strengths. There is very little research focused on second-generation Haitian-American college graduates’ perspective on the possible familial influences pertaining to education. Using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) design and Bowen’s Family Systems Theory as a …
A Grounded Theory Investigation Of Adaptations To Adverse Childhood Experiences, Jeffrey Michael Friedman
A Grounded Theory Investigation Of Adaptations To Adverse Childhood Experiences, Jeffrey Michael Friedman
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, and household dysfunction. Much has been reported about the detrimental outcomes associated with these experiences. The associated negative outcomes of ACEs can include addiction, suicide, disability, teenage pregnancy, and early death. However, it is well known that many people experience ACEs and do very well. Rather than viewing negative outcomes only as symptoms of trauma and positive outcomes only as signs of resilience, it is possible to consider adaptations. This study focused on how adults adapted to their adverse childhood experiences. Data were collected …

Evaluation Of The Relationally Based “Calm-Driven” Service Training For The Automotive Industry, Based On The New World Kirkpatrick Model, Katia Tikhonravova
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the relationally based “Calm-Driven” Service (CDS) training program from the New World Kirkpatrick model perspective. The CDS training program is designed to help automotive professionals in sales and service to relate to their customers by (a) thinking in a different way about human relationships, and (b) realizing their own role in relationships and behavior. The CDS training program is based on the relational systems theory concepts of relational triangles, chronic anxiety, and differentiation of self from the Bowen Family Systems Theory.
The results suggest that the participants had a positive reaction to the training …

Probabilistic Clustering Ensemble Evaluation For Intrusion Detection, Steven M. Mcelwee
Probabilistic Clustering Ensemble Evaluation For Intrusion Detection, Steven M. Mcelwee
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Intrusion detection is the practice of examining information from computers and networks to identify cyberattacks. It is an important topic in practice, since the frequency and consequences of cyberattacks continues to increase and affect organizations. It is important for research, since many problems exist for intrusion detection systems. Intrusion detection systems monitor large volumes of data and frequently generate false positives. This results in additional effort for security analysts to review and interpret alerts. After long hours spent reviewing alerts, security analysts become fatigued and make bad decisions. There is currently no approach to intrusion detection that reduces the workload …
Machine Learning Methods For Septic Shock Prediction, Aiman A. Darwiche
Machine Learning Methods For Septic Shock Prediction, Aiman A. Darwiche
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Sepsis is an organ dysfunction life-threatening disease that is caused by a dysregulated body response to infection. Sepsis is difficult to detect at an early stage, and when not detected early, is difficult to treat and results in high mortality rates. Developing improved methods for identifying patients in high risk of suffering septic shock has been the focus of much research in recent years. Building on this body of literature, this dissertation develops an improved method for septic shock prediction. Using the data from the MMIC-III database, an ensemble classifier is trained to identify high-risk patients. A robust prediction model …
Machine Learning For Exploring State Space Structure In Genetic Regulatory Networks, Rodney H. Thomas
Machine Learning For Exploring State Space Structure In Genetic Regulatory Networks, Rodney H. Thomas
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Genetic regulatory networks (GRN) offer a useful model for clinical biology. Specifically, such networks capture interactions among genes, proteins, and other metabolic factors. Unfortunately, it is difficult to understand and predict the behavior of networks that are of realistic size and complexity. In this dissertation, behavior refers to the trajectory of a state, through a series of state transitions over time, to an attractor in the network. This project assumes asynchronous Boolean networks, implying that a state may transition to more than one attractor. The goal of this project is to efficiently identify a network's set of attractors and to …
A Novel Cooperative Intrusion Detection System For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Adam Solomon
A Novel Cooperative Intrusion Detection System For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Adam Solomon
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have experienced rapid growth in their use for various military, medical, and commercial scenarios. This is due to their dynamic nature that enables the deployment of such networks, in any target environment, without the need for a pre-existing infrastructure. On the other hand, the unique characteristics of MANETs, such as the lack of central networking points, limited wireless range, and constrained resources, have made the quest for securing such networks a challenging task. A large number of studies have focused on intrusion detection systems (IDSs) as a solid line of defense against various attacks targeting …
Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Using Augmented And Virtual Reality In Museum Education, Ronald Punako Jr.
Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Using Augmented And Virtual Reality In Museum Education, Ronald Punako Jr.
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Recent advancements in the cost, availability, and capability of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices and software are spurring their mass distribution to the public. This fundamental shift in the use of AR and VR predominantly from military and academic research laboratories to the public presents new opportunities and challenges for the design of instructional technology. While studies of AR and VR have been conducted to inform the design of individual instructional products, few studies have focused on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) products in which AR and VR learners work together toward shared learning goals.
The museum education …
Evaluation Of Machine Learning Techniques For Early Identification Of At-Risk Students, Mansour Hamoud Awaji
Evaluation Of Machine Learning Techniques For Early Identification Of At-Risk Students, Mansour Hamoud Awaji
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Student attrition is one of the long-standing problems facing higher education institutions despite the extensive research that has been undertaken to address it. To increase students’ success and retention rates, there is a need for early alert systems that facilitate the identification of at-risk students so that remedial measures may be taken in time to reduce the risk. However, incorporating ML predictive models into early warning systems face two main challenges: improving the accuracy of timely predictions and the generalizability of predictive models across on-campus and online courses. The goal of this study was to develop and evaluate predictive models …
Using Twitter As A Pedagogical Resource To Teach First-Year Composition, Carol Reynolds-Srot
Using Twitter As A Pedagogical Resource To Teach First-Year Composition, Carol Reynolds-Srot
Department of Writing and Communication Theses
This study examines the incorporation of Twitter in a first-year composition classroom, and addresses the following question: “How can using Twitter as a pedagogical resource to teach writing benefit both students and professors?” The study employs mixed-methods, including surveys, textual analysis of student tweets, and an interview with the professor to assess the application and outcomes of using Twitter. The research finds that although students use social media for a significant amount of time daily, bringing it into the classroom does not automatically lead to better engagement or improved writing. However, students in this study did demonstrate a differentiated used …
Semi-Informed Multi-Agent Patrol Strategies, Chad E. Hardin
Semi-Informed Multi-Agent Patrol Strategies, Chad E. Hardin
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The adversarial multi-agent patrol problem is an active research topic with many real-world applications such as physical robots guarding an area and software agents protecting a computer network. In it, agents patrol a graph looking for so-called critical vertices that are subject to attack by adversaries. The agents are unaware of which vertices are subject to attack by adversaries and when they encounter such a vertex they attempt to protect it from being compromised (an adversary must occupy the vertex it targets a certain amount of time for the attack to succeed). Even though the terms adversary and attack are …

Biology Faculty Articles
Depression is one of the most important causes of disability-adjusted life years. Currently, the majority of patients are treated with SSRIs. However, the effectiveness of SSRIs is questionable. Method: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the pharmacotherapy treatment selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in patients diagnosed with major depression. This was achieved by comparison to other methods of antidepressant treatment such as, selective serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and psychotherapy. Results: The majority of patients were taking SSRIs for treatment of depression alone or in combination with other antidepressant …
Collaborating Homeless Outreach In Broward County: A Law Enforcement And Social Services Engagement, Edward Rafailovitc
Collaborating Homeless Outreach In Broward County: A Law Enforcement And Social Services Engagement, Edward Rafailovitc
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
In Broward County, Florida, over 2,600 individuals experience homelessness daily (Broward Regional Health Planning Council, 2015). Both positive and negative publicity have resulted, based on how local governments have addressed the problem using law enforcement. The typical cycle of homelessness often results in arrests for life-sustaining misdemeanor crimes that would be better suited for diversion into social services. A recent phenomenon between law enforcement and social services emerged in Broward County to help problem-solve reducing criminal recidivism of the homeless. The focus of this study was the collaboration in Broward County between law enforcement and social services to improve communication …
