Resting-State Cerebral Perfusion Patterns: An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography Clinical Data, Scott Harcourt Jan 2021

Resting-State Cerebral Perfusion Patterns: An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography Clinical Data, Scott Harcourt

Theses and Dissertations

Resting-state (RS) networks (neural regions demonstrating a temporal correlation when a person is not engaged in deliberate activity) are a new topic in neuroscience and neuropsychology, not gaining significant traction in the literature until 2005. Few studies have used single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) to analyze RS. The omission is critical because SPECT RS networks have a different structure and statistical representation than functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) RS networks. Moreover, recent fMRI research has explored RS differences in persons with psychopathology but have not studied brain-behavior assessment with the potential of application of neuropsychological …

Limiting Iron Acquisition Of E. Coli With Anti-Tonb1 And Antitonb2, Jose Diaz, Ryan Luib, Seethal Doki

Protein Modeling Reports

The bacteria E Coli infect approximately 200,000 individuals in the United States and can lead to critical illnesses. The transfer of iron from the bloodstream to bacteria is one of the main requirements for the survival. One of the mechanisms to obtain iron by use of siderophores and the protein FhuA was investigated. Undergraduate students grouped into teams to each explain a unique molecular story- modeled in Jmol/Pymol and demonstrated through a poster and PowerPoint. Using the PDB file, 2GRX, a drug to inhibit the TonB-Ton Box interaction which provides the FhuA iron mechanism energy to operate was researched. A …

Comparing The Effectiveness Between Ivacaftor And Glpg 1837, Saimi Vanessa Reyes, Jordan Nichole Carreras, Vibha Sankavaram

Protein Modeling Reports

Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal disease that is caused by a defect in the CFTR, or cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. It affects more than 70,000 people world-wide and is life-threatening to those affected. To treat this disease there are two drug classes: correctors and potentiators. Correctors aim to correct the misfolded CFTR proteins, while potentiators aid in increasing ion concentration outside of the cells by keeping the channels open for longer periods of time. The aim of this project was to identify the key differences between two similar potentiator drugs, Ivacaftor (Kalydeco®) and GLPG 1837. The research question posed …

Protein Modeling Reports

Matrix metalloproteinase 12 (MMP 12) is one of the twenty-three members of the peptidase M10 family which are primarily responsible for the breakdown of the extracellular matrix. MMP12 plays a key factor in the degradation of elastin and is commonly studied in the lungs of smokers, where MMP12 digests the elastin and serves as a chemokine to recruit a pro-inflammatory immune response. Thus, MMP12 is a major therapeutic target in wound healing and scar formation following a myocardial infarction. Students from the Honors Protein Modeling class at Nova Southeastern University modeled the interactions between MMP12 and various inhibitors. Using the …

Unexpected Role Of Communities Colonizing Dead Coral Substrate In The Calcification Of Coral Reefs, Manoela Romanó De Orte, David A. Koweek, Tyler Cyronak, Yuichiro Takeshita, Alyssa Griffin, Kennedy Wolfe, Alina Szmant, Robert Whitehead, Rebecca Albright, Ken Caldeira

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Global and local anthropogenic stressors such as climate change, acidification, overfishing, and pollution are expected to shift the benthic community composition of coral reefs from dominance by calcifying organisms to dominance by non-calcifying algae. These changes could reduce the ability of coral reef ecosystems to maintain positive net calcium carbonate accretion. However, relationships between community composition and calcification rates remain unclear. We performed field experiments to quantify the metabolic rates of the two most dominant coral reef substrate types, live coral and dead coral substrate colonized by a mixed algal assemblage, using a novel underwater respirometer. Our results revealed that …

This dissertation presents the results of a grounded theory study of the key factors of sibling conflict when caregiving for an aging parent. Following interviews with 30 participants, I conducted initial coding, focused coding and theoretical coding, which led to the development of a theory that explains the relationship of conflict factors such as: beliefs & values, feelings & emotions, roles & expectations, and behaviors & responses. The dissertation includes a discussion of how birth order theories, power theories and psychodynamic theories apply to sibling conflict. In addition, I discuss how the findings apply to conflict resolution skills and offer …

Sex Based Differences In Trust And Dissent: An Exploration Of Leaders And Followers In Healthcare Management, Jennifer De Zayas Carmean Jan 2021

Sex Based Differences In Trust And Dissent: An Exploration Of Leaders And Followers In Healthcare Management, Jennifer De Zayas Carmean

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a quantitative study which looks at the ways in which healthcare followers perceive their leaders regarding gender, over the concepts of trust and organizational dissent. The study was open to members of non-clinical healthcare associations, but clinicians were not specifically excluded. Inferential statistics were inconclusive, as they directly contradict literature that directly correlates trust and dissent in the general business world. Reading subtextual, the outcome indicates possible sublimated conflict between and among both genders, for both followers and leaders. Objectively, women showed more trust in their female leaders, but subjectively this was not true. Indicators in the …

Investigation Of Ant Colony Optimization Implementation Strategies For Low-Memory Operating Environments, Douglas Hale Jan 2021

Investigation Of Ant Colony Optimization Implementation Strategies For Low-Memory Operating Environments, Douglas Hale

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

In search guided by meta-heuristics, a fundamental tradeoff exists between exploitation of good solutions (intensification) and exploration of the solution space for better solutions (diversification). Over-exploitation can limit the search to suboptimal solutions while over-exploration can reduce the efficiency of the overall search. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a well-known meta-heuristic inspired by biological ants for solving NP-hard combinatorial search problems like the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). In nature, biological ant colonies navigate to find efficient paths around complex obstacles by depositing and following simple chemicals called pheromones. ACO algorithms model this behavior by implementing sets of artificial ants which …

Investigating The Structure Of Potential New Drug To Treat Sickle Cell Anemia Through Inhibition Of The Polymerization Of Hemoglobin S, Brianna M. Lacasse, Isadora R. De Abreu, Rathika Manikandan

Protein Modeling Reports

Sickle cell anemia is a hematologic disorder impacting over 15 million people worldwide. It is caused by a single point mutation in the gene hemoglobin-Betha, where a glu group is replaced by val (GAG --- GTG) in the seventh codon (glu7val) of chromosome 1. In this study, we are comparing the anti-sickling properties of drugs in varied conditions in order to create a drug that is effective in an O2-independent manner and with a 1:1 stoichiometry for lower dosage purposes. We used Pymol and Jmol to compare the structures of the aldehydes GBT-440 and VZHE-039, which interact on the same …

Contribution Of The Human Microbiome And Proteus Mirabilis To Onset And Progression Of Rheumatoid Arthritis: Potential For Targeted Therapy, Jessica Kerpez, Marc Kesselman, Michelle Demory Beckler

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The human microbiome has been shown to play a role in the regulation of human health, behavior, and disease. Data suggests that microorganisms that co-evolved within humans have an enhanced ability to prevent the development of a large spectrum of immune-related disorders but may also lead to the onset of conditions when homeostasis is disrupted. In many conditions, a link between dysbiosis (microbial imbalance or microbiome upset) has been identified and associated with immune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This review provides insight into how an individual’s unique microbiome, combined with a genetic predisposition and environmental factors may lead …

Context-Responsive Equitable Strategies For Developing Gender-Responsive Curriculums In Nepal, Parbati Dhungana Ms, Roshani Rajbanshi, Lina Gurung

Transformations

We argue that context-responsive equitable strategies support the development of a gender-responsive curriculum in the context of higher education in Nepal. This paper is our reflective journey of curriculum content analysis of the two Master’s programs (Mathematics and English) from an inclusive cultural perspective of gender which engaged us to explore the answer to the question- How can we develop a gender-responsive curriculum? Adapting inclusive cultural perspective and participatory design we engaged with students and faculties and management representatives in the process of gender mainstreaming through action-reflection cycles. Further, we braided discussion with poetry, that is, a poetic inquiry to …

Pause For A Cybersecurity Cause: Assessing The Influence Of A Waiting Period On User Habituation In Mitigation Of Phishing Attacks, Amy Antonucci Jan 2021

Pause For A Cybersecurity Cause: Assessing The Influence Of A Waiting Period On User Habituation In Mitigation Of Phishing Attacks, Amy Antonucci

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Social engineering costs organizations billions of dollars a year. Social engineering exploits the weakest link of information security systems, the people who are using them. Phishing is a form of social engineering in which the perpetrator depends on the victim’s instinctual thinking towards an email designed to create a fear or excitement response. It is well-documented in literature that users continue to click on phishing emails costing them and their employers significant monetary resources and data loss. Training does not appear to mitigate the effects of phishing much; other solutions are necessary to mitigate phishing.

Kahneman introduced the concepts of …

Investigating The User Experience With A 3d Virtual Anatomy Application, Winnyanne Kunkle Jan 2021

Investigating The User Experience With A 3d Virtual Anatomy Application, Winnyanne Kunkle

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Decreasing hours dedicated to teaching anatomy courses and declining use of human cadavers have spurred the need for innovative solutions in teaching anatomy in medical schools. Advancements in virtual reality (VR), 3D visualizations, computer graphics, and medical graphic images have enabled the development of highly interactive 3D virtual applications. Over recent years, variations of interactive systems on computer-mediated environments have been used as supplementary resource for learners. However, despite the growing sophistication of these resources for learning anatomy, studies show that students predominantly prefer traditional methods of learning and hands-on cadaver-based learning over computer-mediated platforms.

There is limited research on …

A Study Of Factors That Influence Symbol Selection On Augmentative And Alternative Communication Devices For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, William Todd Dauterman

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) each year. Given the complexity of ASD and how it is manifested in individuals, the execution of proper interventions is difficult. One major area of concern is how individuals with ASD who have limited communication skills are taught to communicate using Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices (AAC). AACs are portable electronic devices that facilitate communication by using audibles, signs, gestures, and picture symbols. Traditionally, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are the primary facilitators of AAC devices and help establish the language individuals with …
