School-To-Work Transitions For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students In America, Bobbie Gale Bonds
School-To-Work Transitions For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students In America, Bobbie Gale Bonds
JADARA
Transition from school into the world of work can be difficult. Literacy, communication, and technology skills must be well-developed to enter and remain on the job. Strong school preparation opportunities can help ease the transition. In 1994, as part of the national movement for educational reform. Congress passed the School-to-Work Opportunities Act (STWOA), which recognized the importance of including every student from kindergarten through grade 12, with special focus on the needs of women, minorities, and disabled individuals. The Act, linked with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), requires that educational programs develop school to work (STW) transition plans …

A Comparison Of The Rehabilitation Outcomes Of Persons Who Are Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing And Persons With Other Disabilities, Corey L. Moore
JADARA
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rates of closure success (i.e., status 26) and level of income (i.e., weekly earnings at closure) for consumers with hearing loss (i.e., deaf and hard-of-hearing) and consumers with other disabilities. A random sample of case records (N=34,911) obtained from the RSA 911 database for fiscal year 1997 was evaluated. A series of logistic and multiple linear regression analysis, chi-square analysis, and t-tests were utilized to investigate potential relationships. Results indicated that consumers with hearing loss achieved closure success more often, and possessed higher levels of income when compared to consumers with …

When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White
When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White
JADARA
The literature on Deaf people as parents in the past two decades is presented from both a culturally affirmative and a medical/pathological perspective (Jones, 1995; Lane, 1992, 1993; Meadow-Orlans, 1997; Spencer, Bodner-Johnson & Gutfreund, 1992), with the latter being more prevalent. It is rare to find an article that portrays Deaf people as highly competent and successful parents. It is even rarer to find an article that shows positive outcomes when Deaf parents adopt children (Shettle, 1997; White, 1997). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of adoptive parenthood from the viewpoint of seven Deaf mothers …
Language Assessment Of Deaf Children: American Sign Language And English, Rita Vis Dubé
Language Assessment Of Deaf Children: American Sign Language And English, Rita Vis Dubé
JADARA
Many people recognize American Sign Language (ASL) as the first native language of the Deaf community. However, traditional educational programs have focused only on the development of English language in its spoken, written, and perhaps signed forms. In recent years, the bilingual/bicultural philosophy of deaf education, which recognizes ASL and English as equal and viable languages for the instruction of deaf children, has come to light. The integration of this approach into developmental educational programs for deaf children had tremendous implications for language specialist and educators with regard to the development and assessment of the language abilities of deaf students. …

On Establishing A Culturally Affirmative Psychiatric Inpatient Program For Deaf People, Neil S. Glickman, Sherry M. Zitter
JADARA
The authors describe their effort to create a Deaf culturally affirmative psychiatric inpatient unit at a state psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts. A culturally affirmative program is defined as one based on Deaf cultural values. Four values are discussed in the context of how they could be translated into programmatic realities. These values are (1) that the least restrictive environment for serving deaf people is a Deaf environment; (2) that communication needs to be appropriate as well as affirming of the Deaf community; (3) that staff have to be recruited, hired and developed with the necessary cultural and clinical skills; and …
Hope, Courage, And Resilience In The Lives Of Transgender Women Of Color, Nadine Ruff, Amy B. Smoyer, Jean Breny
Hope, Courage, And Resilience In The Lives Of Transgender Women Of Color, Nadine Ruff, Amy B. Smoyer, Jean Breny
The Qualitative Report
There is a lack of qualitative and strengths-based knowledge about the lived experience of transgender women of color in the US. To address this research gap, a Photovoice project was undertaken with five transgender women living in a small urban area. Thematic analysis of the participants’ discussion of their photographs identified three major themes: hope, courage, and resilience. Analysis suggests a framework for understanding these women’s lived experiences and the psychosocial tools that they use to negotiate their daily lives and persevere in the face of interpersonal and structural oppression.

Gender Identity And Facebook: Social Conservatism And Saving Face, Nastaran Khoshsabk, Jane Southcott
The Qualitative Report
People increasingly log on to Social Networking Websites to remain updated with the latest News and to share their thoughts and their significant life events. Their perception of their own and others’ identities influences their self-presentation on social media. There is a mental image of the audience on the mind of online users when they share content. The extent to which individuals reveal or conceal aspects of their identities within a socio-cultural context affects the presentation of their digital gender identity. We have explored Internet accessibility and use of social media relating to adult users for both Iranians living in …

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is developing regulations to control the future exploitation of deep-sea mineral resources including sulphide deposits near hydrothermal vents, polymetallic nodules on the abyssal seafloor, and cobalt crusts on seamounts. Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea the ISA is required to adopt are taking measures to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment from harmful effects arising from mining-related activities. Contractors are required to generate environmental baselines and assess the potential environmental consequences of deep seafloor mining. Understandably, nearly all environmental research has focused on the seafloor where the most direct …

Social Media And Communication Centers: An Introduction, Janine Morris, Whitney S. Lehmann, Kevin Dvorak
Communication, Media, and Arts Faculty Articles
While many communication centers actively use social media to engage with different publics, there is a need for scholarship addressing how centers can best use social media to enhance student professional development, cross-campus connections, branding, and center visibility. This introduction to the CCJ special section on social media and communication centers offers a rationale for centers’ strategic incorporation of social media platforms. In particular, we discuss the importance of strategic branding, engaging different publics, and using social media to enhance consultant professional development as key features of social media use by communication center professionals.

Spectral Sensitivity In Ray-Finned Fishes: Diversity, Ecology And Shared Descent, Lorian E. Schweikert, Robert R. Fitak, Eleanor M. Caves, Tracey Sutton, Sonke Johnsen
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
A major goal of sensory ecology is to identify factors that underlie sensory-trait variation. One open question centers on why fishes show the greatest diversity among vertebrates in their capacity to detect color (i.e. spectral sensitivity). Over the past several decades, λmax values (photoreceptor class peak sensitivity) and chromacy (photoreceptor class number) have been cataloged for hundreds of fish species, yet the ecological basis of this diversity and the functional significance of high chromacy levels (e.g. tetra- and pentachromacy) remain unclear. In this study, we examined phylogenetic, physiological and ecological patterns of spectral sensitivity of ray-finned fishes (Actinoptergyii) via …
Using Skype As A Qualitative Interview Medium Within The Context Of Saudi Arabia, Maryam Alkhateeb
Using Skype As A Qualitative Interview Medium Within The Context Of Saudi Arabia, Maryam Alkhateeb
The Qualitative Report
This research note reports the results of using Skype as a medium to conduct semi-structured interviews in qualitative studies within the context of Saudi Arabia. Skype audio-only interviews were used to explore the concept of privacy from the perspective of female users in the context of the spatial design of contemporary Saudi houses. The use of Skype audio-only, although accidental, turned out to be fortuitous. The researcher’s study design called for all face-to-face interviews, but due to the location of the researcher and participants and study time frame, some of the interviews were conducted face-to-face and the others were audio …

Stranded At Sea: Photographic Representations Of The Rohingya In The 2015 Bay Of Bengal Crisis, Jenny Yeung, Caroline Lenette
Stranded At Sea: Photographic Representations Of The Rohingya In The 2015 Bay Of Bengal Crisis, Jenny Yeung, Caroline Lenette
The Qualitative Report
Visual representations can contribute to shaping how the general public perceives and engages with issues of forced migration. In 2015, thousands of Rohingya became stranded in the Bay of Bengal when smugglers abandoned them on unseaworthy boats and regional governments refused their disembarkation. Their ordeal made headlines across the globe and photographs documenting the crisis were widely disseminated. This paper applies visual-social semiotics to four of these photographs from an Agence France-Presse public exhibition. Our analysis suggests that the features in the photographs transcend the conventional “threat versus victim” dualism that typically characterizes such representations, to capture both the suffering …

Novel Alert Visualization: The Development Of A Visual Analytics Prototype For Mitigation Of Malicious Insider Cyber Threats, Karla A. Clarke
Novel Alert Visualization: The Development Of A Visual Analytics Prototype For Mitigation Of Malicious Insider Cyber Threats, Karla A. Clarke
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Cyber insider threat is one of the most difficult risks to mitigate in organizations. However, innovative validated visualizations for cyber analysts to better decipher and react to detected anomalies has not been reported in literature or in industry. Attacks caused by malicious insiders can cause millions of dollars in losses to an organization. Though there have been advances in Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) over the last three decades, traditional IDSs do not specialize in anomaly identification caused by insiders. There is also a profuse amount of data being presented to cyber analysts when deciphering big data and reacting to data …
A Case Study Of Teachers’ Experiences Integrating Visual Literacy To Improve Middle School Struggling Readers’ Comprehension, Dianne Tetreault
A Case Study Of Teachers’ Experiences Integrating Visual Literacy To Improve Middle School Struggling Readers’ Comprehension, Dianne Tetreault
Theses and Dissertations
Because the meaning of literacy is changing, teachers lack understanding of how to teach older students the skills they need to read and be proficient in an ever-changing digital world. Moreover, only 34% of U.S. 8th graders read at the proficient level, according to the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the process of how middle school teachers in a large urban district in Florida understand and integrate visual literacy for teaching comprehension in their lesson plans and class instruction after completing professional development and subsequent curricular support on …

Interdisciplinary Collaboration To Ensure The Well-Being Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students With Complex Needs, Deb S. Guthmann Ed.D, Kim Mathos D.O., M.P.H.,, Jessica Richter M.S.
JADARA
Compared to their hearing counterparts, students who are deaf or hard of hearing face unique challenges as they transition from high school to post high school activities. Students who have co-occurring physical, behavioral health, intellectual or autism related challenges may be at higher risk of destabilization in placement or service access when they are no longer eligible for special education services. In this exploratory study, we aim to begin to quantify how transition coordinators and schools that serve deaf or hard of hearing students collaborate with behavioral health care providers, social service, or developmental disability providers when children they serve …
