Curriculum-Oriented Cai Based On Instructional Technology To Be Used For Teaching Secondary School Students Introductory Library Skills, Theresa K. Toohil
Curriculum-Oriented Cai Based On Instructional Technology To Be Used For Teaching Secondary School Students Introductory Library Skills, Theresa K. Toohil
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
In 1990, the New York State Education Department presented a syllabus that required the teaching of curriculum-oriented library skills and suggested the use of computers to be integrated with the teaching of these skills whenever possible. Schools in New York State are now trying to implement the suggestions in the syllabus. Many authors of educational articles have written at length concerning the incorporation of computer-assisted instruction (CAl) into the classroom, but clear directions have not been provided in the literature for the design or implementation of the necessary software.
The purpose of this study was to design a program based …

A Meta-Analysis Of Learner Control In Computer-Based Learning Environments, June A. Parsons
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this meta-analysis was to integrate the results of a collection of primary research studies on learner control of computer-based environments. The scope for the meta-analysis was limited to inquiry on different learner-control models and their effect on student achievement as represented by posttest scores. Three specific research questions were defined:
- What are the characteristics of the body of learner-control research which has examined the effect on achievement of learner control?
- Is there a difference in the achievement of students who are provided with learner control and students who are provided with other control models?
- Do specific moderator …

Dissertation Report Is 8995 Using Dialog Cip At Winona State University To Educate End-Users, Kathryn Sullivan
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Graduate students need to know the resources of their university library in order to do research and cannot be expected to remember any library training they may have received as undergraduates. A class offered by the library on how to search databases available through DIALOG's Classroom Instruction Program (CIP) was proposed, in cooperation with existing research classes in the student's field. A study was conducted at Winona State University. Winona, MN, with research classes offered by two professors in the field of special education. The study was to determine whether the information presented in an instruction session based on six …

Obscenity, Music And The First Amendment: Was The Crew 2 Lively?, Emily Campbell
Nova Law Review
For many years, courts all over the United States have told us
what kind of movies we can watch,4 what kind of books we can read
and what kind of photographs we can view.6 Now, one court in Florida
has told its citizenry that there are certain kinds of music that should
not be heard.

Development And Implementation Of An At-Risk Program To Aid Targeted Middle School Students With Self Esteem And Academic Performance, Diane A. Kallmann
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum addressed the problems of at-risk students with poor social and academic skills. Students lacked learning strategies and displayed poor social skills resulting in student drop out. The literature reviewed stressed a multi-level approach to the problem concentrating on the improvement of academic performance, attitude and self-confidence.
This writer's goals were: (a) to significantly increase self-confidence; (b) to sensitize faculty and administration to the problems of the at-risk student; (c) to increase the academic performance of the targeted students; and (d) to improve the attitude of the students toward school. In addressing these four goals, the writer Implemented a …
The Development Of In-Service Training For Teachers And Counselors Working With Adult Homeless Students, Dagmar F. Pelzer
The Development Of In-Service Training For Teachers And Counselors Working With Adult Homeless Students, Dagmar F. Pelzer
Theses and Dissertations
The number of homeless persons in the United States has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. Nationwide estimates range between three hundred thousand and three million homeless, with a ten to thirty percent annual increase. Efforts to reduce homelessness consist primarily of the provision of housing and employment.
Dade County Public Schools initiated educational programs for homeless adults in February of 1988. Between 1988 and 1991, over three thousand homeless adults were enrolled in part-time and full-time academic and vocational programs. In-service training for teachers and counselors working with the homeless needed to be developed and implemented because …
Developing Self-Motivated, Empowered Middle School Students: A Practical Solution Strategy, Madeline S. Friedman
Developing Self-Motivated, Empowered Middle School Students: A Practical Solution Strategy, Madeline S. Friedman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to address the problem that teachers at the writer’s school had in finding specific teaching strategies that would help students become empowered and self-motivated in terms of their academic efforts and achievement. The teachers wanted the techniques to be directly integrated with the presentation of academic content, rather than separate from that content.
The writer developed a booklet of 13 strategies; presented a workshop to introduce the strategies: met regularly with the six participating teachers during implementation; recorded meeting results; developed a pre/post checklist of intrinsically motivated behaviors in students; and administered pre- and post-measurements to …

A Countywide Program For Expanding Speech-Language Services In The Elementary Schools, Brenda Teas
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum addressed the need to expand and to change the speech-language pathology service delivery system within the county due to the severe shortages of speech-language pathologists and numbers of students going unserved. A review of the literature reveals that shortages are common nationwide and that schools must look for strategies other than short-term recruitment efforts to deal with the problem.
The writer planned training sessions on six alternative service delivery strategies. Training was provided for the lead speech pathologist and special education directors from the 24 school districts in the county. The six strategies were: job-sharing, multilevel service, use …

Using Critical Thinking Skills To Improve Achievement: An Inservice And Instruction Program., Dolores L. Higgins
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This Major Applied Research Project proposed three specific ways to improve the Critical Thinking Skills of students at the Carrie Downie Elementary School as measured by standardized achievement test results, increased placement of students in the Colonial School District's program for the gifted, and the inclusion of critical thinking skills in teacher's daily lessons. During the course of this project, 50 underachieving students were given a learning styles inventory to assess their specific learning needs. Inservice for teachers was conducted to review the results of this inventory and provided instruction in other areas related to thinking skills, such as questioning, …
