Development Of A Test And Establishment Of A Cut Score For The National Fire Academy Chemistry Of Hazardous Materials Course, Burton Adrian Clark
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project (MARP) was to develop a valid and reliable test instrument and to establish a reasonable cut score for the National Fire Academy's (NFA) Chemistry of Hazardous Materials course final exam. In addition, a test technical manual was written based on the American Psychological Association's Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. 1985. There were nine research questions addressed in this MARP: (1) Were test development procedures based on correct educational methodology? (2) Does the test have content validity? (3) Does the test have domain validity? (4) Has an optimal cut score for the …

For over 13 years, officials at Arizona State University (ASU) have called for centralization of campus environmental health and safety (EHS) practices currently handled by five separate departments. As a step toward answering this call, this study involved a two-stage project.
The first stage collected information on centralized programs at different colleges and universities to develop a program model for use at ASU. The second stage evaluated the developed mode. Data were collected on the model's appropriateness with respect to eight major areas of environmental health and safety concerns from a sample of ASU officials and personnel working for each …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Pasco-Hernando Community College (PHCC) must prepare students to meet the 1990 College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) higher standards. The CLAST is a result of the effort made by the State of Florida to ensure that sophomore students have acquired minimum communication and mathematical skills. The CLAST consists of four subtests: essay, English language skills, reading, and mathematics. The mathematics CLAST subtest consists of the five following areas: arithmetic, logic and sets, algebra, geometry, and statistics and probability. The college will encourage students to take the CLAST in their freshman year as a way to identify deficiencies early. It would …
An Investigation Into The Feasibility Of Incorporating Additional Specializations And Concentrations Into The Programs For Higher Education Curriculum Structure, William M. Kaye
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The last major curriculum change in the Programs for Higher Education (PHE) took place seven years ago when the specialization courses were incorporated into the summer institute. Since that time there have been significant changes in the higher education environment which have impacted on the vitality and marketability of the PHE programs. Changes in PHE student demographics have also contributed to an increasing concern about the lack of variety of courses in the academic program, as well issues such as the viability of introducing more specific fields of specialization and/or concentrations to the programs, the potential need for a more …

Black Students’ Attitudes And Perceptions Of Their Educational Experiences With Implications For Persistence And Goal Completion, Carol A. Ferguson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Southwest Missouri State University is a predominately white institution which historically has admitted and retained very few black students. Because of several special programs instituted by the university president, the number of black students enrolled at SMSU is increasing. The campus has a student population of more than 19,000 with the black students making up 1.5 percent of this number. With more and more concern being directed at student retention the issue that attrition has been a problem with all college students including the black students is now being addressed on campus.
The study was designed to examine the students’ …

The Effects Of Modeling And Repeated Taped Reading Instruction On The Learning Disabled Child As Ways To Improve Reading Comprehension Fluency And Word Recognition, Anne L. Rokicki
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum addressed the need to develop an alternative method of teaching reading to learning disabled students who have experienced little success in this area. The necessity for implementation was documented by students' 1989 scores on the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Basic Skills, reading portion. A baseline of students’ pre-intervention performance in oral reading, comprehension, and word recognition both in context and in isolation was established. These scores were compared with post-intervention scores and with students' 1990 scores on the Brigance Test, reading portion. The Heathington Attitude Scale was administered pre and post intervention to determine positive changes in students’ …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this research was to develop a plan to increase high school juniors' and seniors' academic achievement by one grade level and self-esteem by one level as measured by the North York Secondary School Self-Concept Inventory. Examination of 41 Diversified Cooperative Training (DCT) students' cumulative records revealed that 15, or 37 percent, performed below their abilities as proven by comparing the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of the Test of Cognitive Skills, Stanine scores on the Total Language portion of the latest Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skill (CTBS), and the first semester grade in their English classes. Pretest results of …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Practical Bible Training School (PBTS! is a small, private college in need of improved academic advising services. The purpose of this project was to identify strategies in academic advising that would be appropriate for implementation in the small, private college setting, to develop an academic advising system that would address problems experienced at PBTS, and to implement and evaluate such a system through a trial model. A successful program would necessitate limited expansion of resources or personnel, applicability on an institution-wide basis, and demonstrated improvement in adviser and student satisfaction.
A trial model was developed and implemented during the 1989-90 …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Center for Distance Learning (CDL) of Empire State College {ESC} provides courses and individualized degree programs through distance education delivery systems. Mentoring, the primary mode of teacher - student contact, is difficult at a distance, since faculty cannot meet face-to-face with their students. The purpose of this study was to analyze the self-reported learning goals and academic self-conceps5 of the College's distance students. The study was intended to help mentors and administrators better understand these students, particularly their objectives in pursuing a higher education and their confidence in their capacities for academic success. The research questions of this Major …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).
The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino
Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes an alternative program for building self-love among Native American para-alcoholic, elementary school age children. There is a need to increase awareness of the para- alcoholic behaviors existing in young Native American students. The epidemic of alcoholism on the reservation affects all the children and increases the need for nurturing and love. In a culture where touch is limited, prevention strategies are important. The dysfunctional home and community environment should not interfere in a child's ability to learn. Co-dependent children deal daily with their public self and real self, and need outlets to relieve their tensions. The Love …

One of the basic philosophies of Evangel College is to provide an educational opportunity for any student who will actively pursue his or her academic goals. To provide students with the maximum opportunity to succeed, a class devoted to study skills has been offered sith the traditional teacher-centered method of instruction. However, since students come into the class at various levels of skills ability, the class did not seem to meet the immediate study skills needs of the individual student. Therefore, the purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to design a self-paced program of study skills in which …

A Quasi Experimental Study Of Cognitive Styles And Teaching Methodology For Students In Nursing Education., Jane Magee
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Abilene Intercollegiate School of Nursing (AISN) is faced with the task of educating nurses who acquire their undergraduate courses from three different universities. AISN is a consortium of these three institutions of higher education. Just as these students are varied in their first years of higher education, they do not approach. learning situations in the same manner. They differ in the ways they perceive, organize, and relate experiences. It is likely that they respond differently to a particular instructional approach. Little investigation has been done at AISN to define and use specific methods to present relevant information.
The study is …
