Using Photovoice To Identify Factors That Influence Children, Susan M. Cahill, Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Children in the United States are at risk for developing obesity at higher rates than ever before. The study investigated if a picture taking assignment based on Photovoice was effective in engaging children in a discussion about factors that influenced their health and participation in active occupations. Method: Seventeen children between the ages of 10 and 11 years old completed the picture taking assignment and participated in a structured discussion. Results: The children were able to identify factors that promoted a healthy lifestyle, as well as factors that did not promote a healthy lifestyle. The children also established individual …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Students new to research methods may fail to acknowledge that research findings are open to interpretation. They may see the sole purpose of research as proving or disproving a hypothesis. Purpose: The study aims to determine whether an exercise asking research methods students to compare studies using preset evaluation criteria helps those students to better grasp the intricacies of research. The goal of the exercise is to better inform future and current practitioners. Methods:Students in a multidisciplinary health sciences graduate program were asked to compare the methods and findings of two large-scale research studies dealing with a particular topic, the …

The domestic cat is afflicted with multiple viruses that serve as powerful models for human disease including cancers, SARS and HIV/AIDS. Cat viruses that cause these diseases have been studied for decades revealing detailed insight concerning transmission, virulence, origins and pathogenesis. Here we review recent genetic advances that have questioned traditional wisdom regarding the origins of virulent Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) diseases, the pathogenic potential of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) in wild non-domestic Felidae species, and the restriction of Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) mediated immune impairment to domestic cats rather than other Felidae species. The most recent interpretations indicate important …
Investigation Of The Role Of The Family In Anorexia Nervosa Treatment, Katie Dabrowski
Investigation Of The Role Of The Family In Anorexia Nervosa Treatment, Katie Dabrowski
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
Anorexia nervosa burdens individuals with an unyielding obsession with weight loss and food restriction, ultimately leading to extreme emaciation and even death (Kaye, Fudge, & Paulus, 2009). This disorder most often plagues adolescent females, with estimates of prevalence in 0.2% to 1% of adolescent girls (Mirsa et al, 2011). Current literature suggests family relationships and dynamics, rather than blaming individual family members, are essential in understanding and ultimately treating the disorder for adolescent girls. This paper will review the literature on family relationships and dynamics conducive to disordered eating among daughters, as well as examine the findings regarding supportive family …

Incorporating Personal Health Records Into The Disease Management Of Rural Heart Failure Patients, Karen Baron
Incorporating Personal Health Records Into The Disease Management Of Rural Heart Failure Patients, Karen Baron
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Personal Health Records (PHRs) allow patients to access and in some cases manage their own health records. Their potential benefits include access to health information, enhanced asynchronous communication between patients and clinicians, and convenience of online appointment scheduling and prescription refills. Potential barriers to PHR use include lack of computer and internet access, poor computer or health literacy, security concerns, and provider disengagement. PHRs may help those living in rural areas and those with chronic conditions such as heart failure, monitor and manage their disease, communicate with their health care team and adhere to clinical recommendations. To provide some much …

An Elementary-To-Middle School Transitional Program And Its Effect On Student Behavior, Kyle Sheer
An Elementary-To-Middle School Transitional Program And Its Effect On Student Behavior, Kyle Sheer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The transition from elementary to middle school has proven to be difficult for all stakeholders. Reports of increased discipline infractions and truancy, combined with a noticeable drop in overall student achievement, have resulted in numerous attempts to ease the anxieties and frustrations that are characteristic of this transition. Schools often establish transitional programs to prepare incoming middle school students with the skills needed to be successful in a new educational environment. Transitional programs are often very expensive to operate and require an extensive amount of planning. This program evaluation considered 1 specific transitional program that took place during the summer …

Effects Of A Middle Grade Family-School Partnership Program At A Southeastern Charter School, Fayette Nick
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of a middle grade family-school partnership program at a southeastern charter school that served students in kindergarten through Grade 12. In 2009, the state charter school advisory board surveyed parents of students in kindergarten through Grade 8 and found that parental involvement decreased drastically after Grade 5. The state board advised the school to develop a plan of action to increase parental involvement in Grades 6 through 8. It was decided to implement a family-school partnership program in the middle grades. The program was guided by Lueder’s (2011) self-renewing partnership …

An Evaluation Of A 21st Century After-School Tutoring Program At A Rural County Middle School, Jimmy H. Ramey
An Evaluation Of A 21st Century After-School Tutoring Program At A Rural County Middle School, Jimmy H. Ramey
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this research was to evaluate a 21st century after-school tutoring program at a rural middle school. The program was designed to improve achievement, attendance, and behavior.
The evaluation sought to determine if the components were implemented as designed. It also sought to determine what components should be sustained and any unanticipated effects. The evaluation was guided by Stufflebeam’s (2003) CIPP evaluation model. Only the process and product evaluation types were used. Empirical, interview, and survey data were gathered to answer the research questions. In addition, there was a review of various archival documents. Results from the evaluation …
