Identifying Ugliness, Defining Beauty: A Focus Group Analysis Of And Reaction To Ugly Betty, Adria Goldman, Damion Waymer
Identifying Ugliness, Defining Beauty: A Focus Group Analysis Of And Reaction To Ugly Betty, Adria Goldman, Damion Waymer
The Qualitative Report
This article discusses the ideological construct “beauty” that permeates our society by focusing specifically on socially constructed ideals of beauty and ugliness as they are represented in media text, specifically, in the TV sitcom Ugly Betty. For this study we conducted focus group interview sessions to explore the influence an alternative representation of beauty and ugliness, as portrayed in the show Ugly Betty, has on college aged females’ definition and interpretation of beauty—typically questions explored using traditional experimental and other quantitative methods. Moreover, this study provides insights into tensions surrounding how beauty and ugliness are defined and the implications of …

HCBE Faculty Articles
Healthcare costs in the United States have been increasing in recent years. The increase in healthcare costs and the lack of affordable health insurance affects many individuals and organizations. Human resources (HR) departments have started to take strategic steps to lessen the effect of high healthcare costs to the organization. Creating a culture of wellness at work and implementing workplace wellness programs, allows HR to support individual efforts towards a healthy lifestyle. By proving why organizations should invest in their most valuable asset, their employees, the human resources department can strengthen their position as a strategic partner. This paper addresses …

Trophic Dynamics And Feeding Ecology Of The Southeast Florida Coastal Pelagic Fish Community, Travis Allan Moore
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The combined methods of stomach content analysis and stable 15N and 13C isotope biochemistry analysis were used to investigate the trophic dynamics and feeding ecology of coastal pelagic fishes in the waters off southeastern Florida, USA. The coastal pelagic fish complex includes blackfin tuna Thunnus atlanticus, dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus, king mackerel Scomberomorus cavalla, little tunny Euthynnus alletteratus, skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis, and wahoo Acanthocybium solandri. These coastal teleosts, particularly the tunas and wahoo, are primarily targeted by recreational anglers. However, there is a shortage of available trophic and diet composition data concerning …

The purpose of this article is to describe the recruitment challenges faced by eight public health graduate students when conducting qualitative dissertation research. The authors summarize their dissertation studies, describe recruitment challenges, and provide strategies and recommendations used to address challenges. The authors identified twelve recruitment issues which they grouped into three major categories: (a) obtaining consent; (b) working with gatekeepers; and (c) accessing participants. The authors propose three recommendations to consider in participant recruitment, which are: (a) collaborate with gatekeepers; (b) use additional recruitment tools; and (c) understand your target population. The compilation of experiences from multiple graduate students …
Understanding The Linkages In Organisational And Human Relations: A Review Of Social Network Analysis, Loum S.L. Constantine
Understanding The Linkages In Organisational And Human Relations: A Review Of Social Network Analysis, Loum S.L. Constantine
The Qualitative Report
This article proposes a methodological stance, an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of participants’ drawings as one that is useful for research into people’s experiences of seizure consciousness. Using empirical examples located in an original, larger study, this article offers a rationale for, and illustrates the analytic potential of, this combination. It also considers that elicitation interviewing techniques and methods from the field of neuro-phenomenology could take this work further in terms of deepening the analysis by reaching people’s pre-reflexive conscious experiences. This theoretical and practical combination has the potential to develop this work significantly.

Do Glucose Containing Beverages Play A Role In Thermoregulation, Sensation, And Mood State?, Yongsuk Seo, Corey Allen Peacock, John Gunstad, Keith J. Burns, Brandon S. Pollock, Ellen L. Glickman
Department of Health and Human Performance Faculty Articles
Introduction
Dehydration limits the appropriate delivery of oxygen and substrates to the working muscle. Further, the brain’s ability to function may also be compromised whereby thermal sensation and mood state may be altered.
Purpose
The purpose of the present investigation was to compare the thermoregulatory, perceptual, and negative mood state profile in glucose (GLU) vs. non-glucose beverage (NON-GLU) condition.
Methods
Ten healthy men volunteered and were counterbalanced either a GLU or NON-GLU containing beverage on separate mornings. In each condition, they were exposed to 37°C, 50% relative humidity (RH) for baseline, exercise, rehydration, and recovery periods. The exercise period elicited …

Diet Of The Antillean Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Manatus) In Belize, Central America, Aarin Conrad Allen
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Belize has been identified as an important location for Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus), harboring the highest known population density of this subspecies. Information about their dietary habit is important in determining habitat requirements and aiding in conservation efforts. The main objective of this study was to identify the key plant species consumed by manatees in Belize and to establish differences in diet based on location, sex, size classification, and season. Samples were collected from two different locations within Belize where manatees are known to aggregate: Southern Lagoon and the Drowned Cayes off of Belize City. The contents …

Quality Of Care From A Parent’S Point Of View: An Examination Of An Early Childhood Education Center Located At A Community College, Jennifer Brown
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation was designed to understand parents’ views about child care and the variables that influence their decision to place their children in 5-star child-care facilities. Child care of any kind is often the first group experience children have outside the home. The first 5 years are the most important years in a child’s educational life; it sets the educational foundation for the rest of the child’s life.
The quantitative portion of this study consisted of four research questions, which assessed several sets of relationships and issues: (a) the relationship between demographic data and quality of care; (b) the …

An Integrated Approach To Diabetes Prevention: Anthropology, Public Health, And Community Engagement, Janet Page-Reeves, Shiraz I. Mishra, Joshua Niforatos, Lidia Regino, Andrew Gingerich, Robert Bulten
The Qualitative Report
Diabetes is an enormous public health problem with particular concern within Hispanic communities and among individuals with low wealth. However, attempts to expand the public health paradigm to include social determinants of health rarely include analysis of social and contextual factors considered outside the purview of health research. As a result, conceptualization of the dynamics of diabetes health disparities remains shallow. We argue that using a holistic anthropological lens has the potential to offer insights regarding the nature of the interface between broader social determinants, health outcomes and health disparity. In a primarily Hispanic, immigrant community in Albuquerque, New Mexico, …

Discursive Narrative Analysis: A Study Of Online Autobiographical Accounts Of Self-Injury, Olga Sutherland, Andrea V. Breen, Stephen P. Lewis
The Qualitative Report
This article offers an innovation in narrative analysis afforded by incorporating analytic concepts from discourse analysis. We share some examples from our study of online autobiographical accounts of non - suicidal self - injury (NSSI) to illustrate the various aspects of a discursive narrative approach to research. We show how the participants construct events and experiences as sequentially linked and temporarily related using a range of discursive practices and devices, including producing contrasting descriptions of emotional states, using figurative language, vivid or vague descriptions, and extreme case formulations. The specific way in which experience was constituted as sequentially and causally …

Species Composition And Reproductive Strategies Of Commensal Synalpheus Shrimp (Decapoda:Alpheidae) Occupying The Sponges Spheciospongia Vesparium And Spongia Sp. Of The Florida Reef Tract, Brittnee Nicole Barris
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Synalpheus shrimp species of the gambarelloides group are the only marine organisms displaying the highest level of social functioning, eusociality. Their social hierarchies are equally complex compared to the reproductive abnormalities that have been recently discovered. For instance, snapping shrimp of the genus Synalpheus were thought to be gonochoric, i.e. developing as independent sexes, until scanning electron microscopy studies revealed intersexed gonopores in several species. This project analyzed both the species composition, and accompanying reproductive structures, of Synalpheus spp. (Caridea: Alpheidae) comprised of densely aggregating communal and pair-living colonies in the Florida Keys, Florida.
Colonies of pair-living and communal Synalpheus …

Personal Genomics: Good, Evil, Or Both?, Emily Schmitt
CAHSS Intellectual Conversations
With the increasing availability of personal genomic testing, there have been warnings that the results may lead to discrimination by insurance companies, employers, or the community. In addition, some individuals fear potential identity theft and loss of personal autonomy, despite the benefits of discovering potential genetic risks and possibilities of more-focused treatments. This lecture will examine whether personal genomics is good, evil, or both.

Tracking Transmission Of Apicomplexan Symbionts In Diverse Caribbean Corals, Nathan L. Kirk, Raphael Ritson-Williams, Mary Alice Coffroth, Margaret W. Miller, Nicole D. Fogarty, Scott R. Santos
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Symbionts in each generation are transmitted to new host individuals either vertically (parent to offspring), horizontally (from exogenous sources), or a combination of both. Scleractinian corals make an excellent study system for understanding patterns of symbiont transmission since they harbor diverse symbionts and possess distinct reproductive modes of either internal brooding or external broadcast spawning that generally correlate with vertical or horizontal transmission, respectively. Here, we focused on the under-recognized, but apparently widespread, coral-associated apicomplexans (Protista: Alveolata) to determine if symbiont transmission depends on host reproductive mode. Specifically, a PCR-based assay was utilized towards identifying whether planula larvae and reproductive …

Feast Your Eyes On This—Markets In Ponta Delgada, Azores, And Granada And Barcelona, Spain: A Photographic Essay, Edwin Stieve
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
Before Publix, Winn Dixie and other chain supermarkets emerged in the 20th Century, there were markets on open, cobblestone streets somewhere near the center of many small towns throughout America. But for contemporary Americans, the open-air market has become more remote and might now be a small area in a park or public lot where weekend farmers’ markets and flea markets offer a few bins of organic fruits and vegetables and homemade or handmade goods. While the tradition has disappeared from many U.S. cities, permanent, open-air markets still thrive in Africa, Asia, and Europe where vendors set up carts and …
