Cancer-Related Fatigue Clinical Guideline And Protocol For Hospitalized Oncology Patients: A Quality Improvement Project, Sulotte Valcin Amilcar
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common symptom experienced by cancer patients throughout their cancer trajectory. However, very little effort has been made within many oncology practices to assess this clinical problem and to provide timely nursing interventions to reduce its impact. While there have been tremendous advancements in the treatments of the disease aspects of cancer in term of medicine and advanced technology, basic assessment of related physiological concerns, such as fatigue, have not seen the same progress. Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop an evidence-based cancer-related fatigue assessment guideline and a …
Chemotherapy Side Effects At Home: A Nursing Impact, Gwendolyn E. Saint-Clarke
Chemotherapy Side Effects At Home: A Nursing Impact, Gwendolyn E. Saint-Clarke
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Approximately 32% of all lymphoma patients experience immunocompromised severe avoidable side effects of nadir at home after discharge postchemotherapy. The certified oncology nurses employed at a large metropolitan hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, lack standardized discharge guidelines that include regulatory organizations’ recommendations to assist patients/families with at-home self-management of the avoidable side effects. Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to utilize the institution’s existing postchemotherapy discharge protocol to assess certified oncology nurses’ knowledge of severe avoidable side effects of nadir; modify the existing healthcare institution’s postchemotherapy discharge protocol to reflect standardized practice for promoting clinical practice continuity …

Addressing Obstetric Health Care Providers' Nutritional Insight In The Low Socioeconomic Population, Nicole Theresa Marshall
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: During a woman's pregnant state, a diet that is adequate in nutrition is critical to the developing fetus, especially in the lower socioeconomic status population. The healthcare provider is charged with the acute fundamental awareness of this additional factor that can grossly impact pregnancy. Nutritional advice from the health care provider is one of many key points that contribute to the successful outcome of the pregnancy. Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop a standardized, evidence-based practice (EBP) protocol for the management of maternal nutrition, gestational weight gain, and physical activity for provider use at …
Predicting Cardiovascular Fitness In Ethnic Minority Youth: A Comparison Of Demographic, Body Composition, And Physical Activity Variables, Steven Arcidiacono
Predicting Cardiovascular Fitness In Ethnic Minority Youth: A Comparison Of Demographic, Body Composition, And Physical Activity Variables, Steven Arcidiacono
Theses and Dissertations
Prevalence of obesity, low physical activity, and poor physical fitness of youth in the United States are increasingly poor and in need of intervention to prevent later concerns like hypertension. The overall goal of this dissertation was to examine which factors weigh heaviest in predicting cardiovascular fitness in diverse youth, and how we might measure those factors by maximizing clinical utility and psychometric properties. The sample was gathered from a larger study examining physical activity in youth from Miami-Dade county enrolled in out-of-school programs. Participants (N = 58) were aged 6-17 and comprised exclusively of Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Black children …
Ptsd Subtypes, Depressive Presentation, Dissociation, And Cognitive Appraisals And Their Impact On Cardiovascular Reactivity Responses To Stress, Dyona Augustin
Ptsd Subtypes, Depressive Presentation, Dissociation, And Cognitive Appraisals And Their Impact On Cardiovascular Reactivity Responses To Stress, Dyona Augustin
Theses and Dissertations
Both posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are related to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), with links to ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, cardiac mortality, and other cardiac conditions. Given that these disorders are associated with increased medical costs, disability, and employer burden, research has investigated which factors increase the likelihood that one will develop CVD. While one hypothesis suggests that individuals who exhibit exaggerated responses to stress are at greater risk of developing CVD, individuals with PTSD/depression have been shown to exhibit both exaggerated and blunted stress responses. The purpose of the present study …

Lifestyle Medicine Professionals In Training: A Survey Of Behaviors, Knowledge And Needs, Camille A. Clarke, Jonathan P. Bonnet, Marsha Gail Davis, Elizabeth P. Frates
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background/Purpose: It is well known that healthy lifestyle habits can influence chronic disease risk and outcomes. The effective practice of Lifestyle Medicine (LM), however, goes beyond general recommendations and has been encapsulated in well-defined clinical competencies. While it has been documented that graduating medical students feel inadequately prepared to counsel patients in nutrition and exercise, the purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions and experiences of Lifestyle Medicine in a group of interdisciplinary healthcare trainees. Methods: A pilot survey of trainees at the 2015 Annual American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) Conference assessed perspectives on the inclusion of …
The Influence Of Innate Behavioral Predispositions On Conflict Stakeholder Interactions In Mediation: The Camp David Accords Of 1978, Stephen D. Merson
The Influence Of Innate Behavioral Predispositions On Conflict Stakeholder Interactions In Mediation: The Camp David Accords Of 1978, Stephen D. Merson
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
This constructivist grounded theory study will explore the possibility that early socio-cultural experience in concert with innate cognitive mechanisms are essential components of a dual process of decision-making. Each element may influence conflict actors toward predictable predispositional behaviors manifest as bias. Specifically, we are concerned that these biases will influence the perceived and actual neutrality of the principle mediator thus compromising a mediation success. The presence of these predispositions in both mediators and conflict stakeholder challenges the validity of the conclusions in other research that does not consider the true impact of cultural dissonance on more than a superficial insinuation …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Introduction: The call for increasing interprofessional education requires institutional support for educators in the clinical environment. Innovative ideas, such as partnering with multiple universities and programs to facilitate an interprofessional workshop, have the opportunity to reach a broader group of clinical educators. The purpose of this study was to examine the attitude of healthcare professionals towards interprofessional learning, familiarity with concepts of interprofessional teaching, and interprofessional practice, and to examine the influence of an interprofessional faculty development workshop on participant familiarity with concepts of interprofessional teaching and learning. Methods: The occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs from two …

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
This is a case study dissertation to research the socio-political conflict surrounding Gilles Eric Séralini’s et al (2012) research on the toxicity of Monsanto’s NK603 line of corn and the herbicide Roundup. The study analyzes this conflict as a system of interconnected and often conflicting interests, assumptions and ideologies about how knowledge is created and transformed from the research stage to the policy implementation stage. The goal of this study is to: 1.) analyze critical surface level and underlying factors that contribute to the conflict; 2.) analyze systemic processes between national and international researchers, private interests and government policymakers in …

Interprofessional Collaboration Within Teams Comprised Of Health And Other Professionals: A Systematic Review Of Measurement Tools And Their Psychometric Properties, Julia Jacob, Kobie Boshoff, Rebecca Stanley, Hugh Stewart, Louise Wiles
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background and Purpose: Measuring collaboration within interprofessional teams allows professionals to evaluate their practice, set benchmarks and improve outcomes. In the context of healthcare, most research has focused on teams comprised solely of health professionals, with limited attention given to collaboration between health and other professionals. Given the escalating complexities of healthcare, and the growing need for interprofessional collaborative practice involving team members external to health care, this represents a considerable gap in the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this review was to identify tools that measure collaboration within interprofessional teams comprised of members from health and other disciplines, and …
