Moratorium On Maltzman: An Appeal To Reason, Mark B. Sobell, Linda C. Sobell Sep 1989

Moratorium On Maltzman: An Appeal To Reason, Mark B. Sobell, Linda C. Sobell

Faculty Articles

Maltzman's comment on Cook (1985), which appears elsewhere in this issue, is an unveiled attempt to resurrect the same allegations about our research that he made 7 years ago. None of the allegations are new! Over the past 7 years, those allegations have been the topic of 5 separate inquiries, in each of which we were vindicated. In this response, we review the multiple inquiries and we show how Maltzman continues to (1) cite our work out of context, (2) make false assumptions about the inquiries and our procedures and (3) disregard evidence contradicting his assertions. He relies on data …

Teaching Self-Esteem To Improve Performance In Eighth Grade Basic Earth Science, J Mark Huffines

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Low performance in a basic eighth-grade earth science class was addressed by a one-class-period per week self-esteem unit presented by the writer and daily positive self-concept reinforcement methods implemented by the regular classroom teacher. Students were presented concepts of self-esteem such as "self-talk,” “irrational beliefs,” “setting and attaining goals,” and “positive relationships” and participated in discussions concerning their feelings about themselves, school, families, and others. There was a standardized measure of self-esteem pretest and posttest, and student performance was measured via comparison of their earth science grade average between the first and the tenth week. Students improved in both grade …

Using Whole Language Materials In The Adult Esol Classroom, Edward W. Schiffer Jul 1989

Using Whole Language Materials In The Adult Esol Classroom, Edward W. Schiffer

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Many English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students live in areas in which the English language is not the principal means of communication in everyday life. However, because English is the principal language of the broader society, non-English speakers are motivated to attend ESOL classes in order to participate in the mainstream and to receive society's benefits. The classroom is the principal source of meaningful English input for these students. Opportunities for second language acquisition are limited once the students are outside the classroom. This reality makes the quantity and quality of language presented in the classroom a crucial …

Improving Social Studies Achievement: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Lindalee Kaminski

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A high percentage of students in a second grade class with low socio-economic characteristics demonstrated exceptionally low achievement in social studies. The problem was addressed by the implementation of an interdisciplinary program to increase basic skills in all areas of the curriculum. Activities designed to increase the target group's understanding of social studies concepts while practicing skills in reading, language arts, math, and science were incorporated into all subject areas utilizing a whole language approach. An emphasis on critical thinking and daily news events allowed for student growth in inferential comprehension and the formation of attitudes about the world. The …

Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

California community college reform legislation enacted in August 1988 was predicated on the willingness of the colleges to assume an increasingly more prominent role in local, regional, and statewide economic development. Many colleges, especially small community colleges, have not clearly defined their potential role as a catalyst and resource for economic development.

This study had three primary purposes related to the role of the community college in economic development. First, the results of this study should assist administrators at Crafton Hills College, a small two-year public community college in southern California, in defining and implementing the college's economic development mission …

Biology Faculty Articles

Interchromosomal translocations within lymphoid neoplasms frequently involve the antigen receptor genes. We cloned the breakpoints of the t(11;14)(p15;q11) in a CD3-negative T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line (RPMI 8402) in order to identify new genes potentially involved in T-cell neoplasia. An extensive comparison of both breakpoints and their germ line counterparts indicated that an inadvertant recombinase-mediated break at chromosome segment 11p15 recombined with the delta T-cell receptor at 14q11. The derivative 11 breakpoint resembles a coding joint in which 11p15 rather than a variable region was introduced 5' to a Dδ1Dδ2Jδ1 intermediate rearrangement. Conversely, the …

A Management System For Parental Reinforcement Of Reading Skills For First Grade Chapter I Students, Karen R. Kroeger

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Many Chapter I first grade students, at the practicum site, were not meeting pupil progression standards in reading and had already been retained in kindergarten or first grade. As a result, they would be administratively placed in second grade while still below the beginning second grade reading level. This statement was confirmed by the scores on a reading assessment test. In order to enhance the mastery of these required reading skills, a tutorial program was designed to train parents in methods which helped the children to improve their basic reading skills. The results of this practicum showed that the students …
