Section 1201 of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act provided sweeping protection for technological measures or virtual locks on digital content to protect the entertainment industries-including music, films, games, and consumer electronics. Manufacturers use digital rights management (DRM) authorized under the law to lock down all software embedded in products, movies on DVDs, and audio files sold on iTunes and other Internet sites. DRM unfairly extends copyright and that legal protection is unnecessary to the robust development of new creative works Critics of the DMCA have charged that the law has extended well past its anti-piracy role to undermine fair …

Developing Interdisciplinary Team Competencies In A Blended Learning Course: Impact On Student Learning, Sharla King, Elizabeth Taylor, Franziska Satzinger, Mike Carbonaro, Elaine Greidanus
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Health science educators increasingly focus on preparing health science students to work in interdisciplinary environments. Interdisciplinary communication is often hindered by geographic distances, creating barriers to effective interdisciplinary practice. Information and communication technologies are tools that can help reduce these barriers. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that students learn to communicate and collaborate with other disciplines in both face-to-face and on-line settings. The purpose of this article is to describe students’ perceptions of developing team skills in an interdisciplinary team context using a blended learning format. Understanding the students’ experiences will help health science educators prepare students effectively …

The Energy Charter Treaty's Investor Protection Provisions: Potential To Foster Solutions To Global Warming And Promote Sustainable Development, Edna Sussman
ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law
It is with pleasure that I join my esteemed colleagues on the panel. With the importance of the reliability of energy supply in today's world and the impact of the energy sector on global warming and international security, a review of the only multilateral treaty that deals specifically and exclusively with energy is timely.

The northern extension of the Florida reef tract and a complex of limestone ridges run parallel to the subtropical Atlantic coastline of southeast Florida. Spanning 170 km from the northern border of Biscayne National Park (BNP) in Miami-Dade County to the St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County, the reefs and hardbottom areas in this region support a rich and diverse biological community (Figure 5.1). Nearshore reef habitats in southeast Florida include hardbottom areas, patch reefs and worm reefs (Phragmatopoma spp.) exhibiting abundant octocoral, macroalgae, stony coral and sponge assemblages. Offshore, coral reef associated biotic assemblages occur on linear Holocene Acropora …

Smart Classroom Technology: Instructional Effectiveness And Faculty And Student Satisfaction, Jon Preston Mckamey
Smart Classroom Technology: Instructional Effectiveness And Faculty And Student Satisfaction, Jon Preston Mckamey
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Numerous designs, practices, stakeholders, and technology options make it difficult for higher education institutions to find direction and established standards for classroom construction and remodeling projects. Different models of technology-enhanced classrooms are being adopted as various managers, integrators, and architects develop new classroom spaces. A planning process, standardized classroom model, and effective support structure will be valuable elements in meeting the needs of faculty and students.
The goal was to establish a best practices classroom model to meet the needs of community college faculty, students, and technology support personnel. Information collected from community colleges was used to determine the state …

Web 2.0 Tools Improve Teaching And Collaboration In High School English Language Classes, Mahmud Shihab
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Web 2.0 tools, namely blogs, wikis, podcasts, and RSS were introduced to change teaching practices of in-service high school teachers to improve the collaboration of today's students in the English language classroom. Two high school teachers of English language and their classes participated. The teachers were interviewed about their current teaching practices and provided with training to develop teaching units that use Web 2.0 to engage students as active collaborators in their learning. They integrated blogs, podcasts, wikis, and RSS into their teaching. Additional interviews were conducted during and after the implementation stage. Implementation strategies, changes in teaching practices, challenges …

Effective resource management requires robust baseline datasets and efficient monitoring programs to identify and quantify temporal change. The Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano (Veracruz Coral Reef System National Park) encompasses a total of 52000ha including 23 coral reefs in two island groups separated by the mouth of the Jamapa River; one near the port of Veracruz, Mexico and one approximately 20km south near Punta Antón Lizardo. Both groups receive substantial fisheries pressure and other anthropogenic impacts. Using non-destructive, visual methods we surveyed fish and benthic assemblages at 18 sites, which included 10 individual coral reefs within the Park. For fishes, …
