Engaging Millennial Students Through Community-Engaged Experiential Learning, Maureen Andrade, Jonathan H. Westover

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Millennial students and workers are high-achieving, have a strong desire for ongoing personal and professional development, and tend to be invested in making a sustainable impact on society and in the communities in which they live and work. One avenue to engage these students is community-engaged experiential learning (or service learning). While service learning is not new, this “civically-engaged” pedagogy has increased in popularity and usage. It provides meaningful community-service opportunities that simultaneously teach civic responsibility and encourage life-long civic engagement, while also providing significant real-life, hands-on learning of important skills and vital social understanding. This quantitative study examines the …

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 75 teacher candidates from SUNY Old Westbury were engaged in their Applied Learning Practicum in public schools across Long Island. Of those students, 18 were in the Exceptional Education and Learning Department. When the first teacher candidate was asked to leave her placement, faculty in the Exceptional Education and Learning Department pivoted to design an individualized learning plan for each teacher candidate to augment their clinical placement experience.

Effect Of Silver Diamine Fluoride On Candida Albicans Associated With Early Childhood Caries, Sarah Al Kukash

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in childhood worldwide. It afflicts 23% of the preschoolers in the U.S. It most frequently targets children from poor socioeconomic families and racial/ethnic minority backgrounds and becomes a serious public health problem. The major pathogen of ECC is Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). However, the occurrence of ECC is positively associated with the presence of Candida albicans (C. albicans). It is well established that Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), a recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-off labeled approved agent for arresting dental caries, exhibits a robust antibacterial effect on …

Can A Prescribed Walking Program With Or Without Monitoring Impact Dizziness In The Older Adults? A Pilot Study, Amie Marie Jasper Jan 2020

Can A Prescribed Walking Program With Or Without Monitoring Impact Dizziness In The Older Adults? A Pilot Study, Amie Marie Jasper

Department of Physical Therapy Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Background. Dizziness, a common complaint among older adults, is associated with multiple falls, loss of function and independence, and reduced balance confidence. The Clinical Practice Guideline for Peripheral Vestibular Hypofunction recommends walking for endurance as a component of vestibular rehabilitation (VR). However, studies on VR in the olderadults do not include walking in the intervention.

Research Design: 1) A pragmatic, randomized, experimental design to evaluate the impact of walking on vestibular outcomes, length of stay, and number of visits, and to examine whether pedometers increase the adherence of older adults with vestibular issues to a walking program; 2) a descriptive …

Simulation-Based Learning To Improve Athletic Trainers’ Knowledge Of Exertional Sudden Death Conditions: A Pilot Study, Zachary K. Winkelmann, Elizabeth R. Neil, Kenneth E. Games, Stacy E. Walker, Lindsey E. Eberman Jan 2020

Simulation-Based Learning To Improve Athletic Trainers’ Knowledge Of Exertional Sudden Death Conditions: A Pilot Study, Zachary K. Winkelmann, Elizabeth R. Neil, Kenneth E. Games, Stacy E. Walker, Lindsey E. Eberman

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Continuing education for the practicing clinician typically involves reading peer-reviewed journals and attending professional conferences. These mechanisms do not allow for practice and real-time evaluation of healthcare skills. Simulation-based learning has been widely used in professional education yet is not common in the continued development of the clinician in their lifespan. Method: We used a cross-sectional, repeated measures pilot study. The participants included 11 athletic trainers (age=40±14 years; certified experience=17±14 years) that engaged in a multi-modal continuing professional development session that included a lecture, large-scale simulated learning experience, and debriefing session at a healthcare conference. The outcome measures included …

Survey Of Attitudes, Knowledge, And Barriers To Evidence-Based Practice Among Thai Physical Therapists, Mantana Vongsirinavarat, Witaya Mathiyakom, Warin Krityakiarana, Ninwisan Hengsomboon, Ratchanok Kraiwong Jan 2020

Survey Of Attitudes, Knowledge, And Barriers To Evidence-Based Practice Among Thai Physical Therapists, Mantana Vongsirinavarat, Witaya Mathiyakom, Warin Krityakiarana, Ninwisan Hengsomboon, Ratchanok Kraiwong

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Healthcare professionals are encouraged to use evidence-based practice (EBP) to improve the quality of care and the patient’s quality of life. Knowledge and skill set specific to EBP, critical resources such as time and accessibility to databases, and clinician’s attitude toward EBP are needed for successful implementation of EBP. However, little is currently known about these factors among Thai Physical Therapists (PTs). This study aimed to explore the patterns of attitudes, perceived knowledge, and barriers toward EBP in Thai PTs. Method: An online questionnaire was used to obtain information regarding attitudes, knowledge, and barriers from Thai PTs. Descriptive statistics …

Where’S Social Work? A Critical Analysis Of Gender Invisibility, Ethical Conflict, And Advocacy In Medical Teams, Roxanna Duntley-Matos, Robert M. Ortega, Maria M. Matos Jan 2020

Where’S Social Work? A Critical Analysis Of Gender Invisibility, Ethical Conflict, And Advocacy In Medical Teams, Roxanna Duntley-Matos, Robert M. Ortega, Maria M. Matos

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The traditional biomedical and person-in-environment (PIE) perspectives are often found in conflict when framed within broader gender discrimination and consumerist health care practices. Our critical feminist analysis addresses the case of Katie, a vulnerable health care recipient, whose intersecting identities fall outside of the “margins of acceptability.” Communication deficits among team members and a lack of clear care protocols become evident. Insurance demands to justify coverage undermine the processes of beneficence and the ethic of care required for emancipatory advocacy. We present the tripartite paradigm of transformative complicity, cultural humility, and systems-based empowerment to address the complex ethical dilemmas that …

Interpreting Code Enforcement Complaint By Complaint: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Experience In Document Analysis, Daniel John Stallone Jan 2020

Interpreting Code Enforcement Complaint By Complaint: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Experience In Document Analysis, Daniel John Stallone

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

The current hermeneutic phenomenological study was completed to provide direction for the content analysis of code enforcement complaint documents by municipal code enforcement agencies. This hermeneutic interpretive research was conducted using qualitative content analysis of greater than 500 code enforcement complaint documents submitted to a municipal code enforcement agency over 12 months. The phenomenological research was guided by the following research questions: 1.What indicators are identified by content analysis in a complaint document received from the community of shareholders of a municipal code enforcement agency? 2. What manner of delivery of a complaint document is most frequently exercised by the …

The Verbal And Non-Verbal Indicators Of Deceit In Financial And Political Fraud: A Case Study Of Bernard L. Madoff, Chen Shui-Bien And Bo Xilai, Vivian Wu Jan 2020

The Verbal And Non-Verbal Indicators Of Deceit In Financial And Political Fraud: A Case Study Of Bernard L. Madoff, Chen Shui-Bien And Bo Xilai, Vivian Wu

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

From the earliest financial scams of the seventeenth century, through the headlinegrabbing Wall Street scandals of our time, financial fraud and embezzlement have damaged both domestic and global economic systems. Preventative measures are the best way to reduce fraud. Fraudsters are adaptive and will find ways to circumvent such measures. Detecting fraud is essential once the prevention mechanisms have failed. This dissertation investigated the inherent problems of financial fraud detection for high stake fraudsters in the corporate and political fields in the United States, China and Taiwan. Both verbal and non-verbal signs of deception were examined in the case studies …
