Responding To Violence From Abroad: The Mexican Diaspora Mobilising From Brussels And Paris Through Art-Based Strategies, Larisa Lara-Guerrero
Responding To Violence From Abroad: The Mexican Diaspora Mobilising From Brussels And Paris Through Art-Based Strategies, Larisa Lara-Guerrero
Peace and Conflict Studies
Over 150,000 people were intentionally killed in Mexico since 2006, after the Mexican government decided to openly combat organized crime. Against the backdrop of the security crisis, members of Mexican society have developed national and transnational strategies to contribute to the respond to the rampant violence in their homeland.
By introducing a transdisciplinary approach and peacebuilding theories, this paper argues that Mexican migrants living in Brussels and Paris have been able to orchestrate transnational art-based strategies to contribute to the violence alleviation in their country of origin. In particular, this empirical paper argues that Mexican migrants living in these two …

Qualitative Insider Research In A Government Institution: Reflections On A Study Of Policy Capacity, Bobby Cameron
The Qualitative Report
Embarking on a qualitative Ph.D. research project in public administration is often daunting for novice researchers. For those students who consider adopting an emic or insider approach for their research, the ethical, methodological, and analytical challenges that lay ahead may seem insurmountable at times. In this article, I reflect on my experience as a Ph.D. student completing qualitative research with my colleagues to study policy capacity in a provincial government in Canada. I review how I constructed an ethical framework by integrating policy from Research Ethics Boards and government. Throughout the article, I deal primarily with ethical considerations and the …

A Rapid Review Of Internet Mediated Research Methods With People With Dementia: Practical, Technical And Ethical Considerations, Tharin Phenwan Dr, Judith Sixsmith Prof, Linda Mcswiggan Dr, Deans Buchanan Dr
The Qualitative Report
Doing research with People with Dementia (PwD) can be challenging given that disease symptoms of anxiety, forgetfulness, and fluctuating mental capacity can make recruitment and data collection difficult. Once COVID-19 made face-to-face data collection impractical, using internet-based methods became an alternative option to continue with research. However, data collection with PwD over the internet requires strategies to observe, support, and enable them to engage with research, especially with qualitative approaches. Nine articles were selected via a decade rapid scoping review (undertaken March-June 2020) to identify qualitative online methods used with PwD and associated challenges. Methods used were online interviews, clinical …

Virtual Photovoice: Methodological Lessons And Cautions, Meagan Call-Cummings, Melissa Hauber-Özer
The Qualitative Report
Photovoice is a type of participatory inquiry, which is a methodological and onto-epistemological stance that seeks to emancipate marginalized individuals, confront inequity, and work for social transformation. Photovoice incorporates Paulo Freire’s problem-posing education, documentary photography techniques, and feminist thought as an approach for community members to identify shared concerns and construct collective knowledge. It also seeks to challenge unequal power relations by disrupting hegemonic structures in the production of knowledge and policy, as photographs and accompanying descriptions can communicate powerfully about community needs and demands for change. University-based researchers or practitioners facilitate this communication by bringing community perspectives to the …

Sobre La Lucha De Ser Mujeres: Subjetividades Políticas Femeninas, Magda V. Díaz Alzate Mg., Nicolasa M. Duran Palacio Dra, Deysafira Gómez Durán Mg.
The Qualitative Report

Simulation-Based Learning: From Learning Theory To Pedagogical Application, Sarah Ross
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Simulation is a powerful learning tool, but being powerful requires understanding and incorporating sound educational learning theory and pedagogical practices into the design and implementation. Unfortunately, current research and publication related to simulation show limited evidence of integration of educational theory. While articles may reference learning theories in introductions or literature reviews, there is little evidence of these theories being integrated into the conceptual framework, research, or simulation-based learning event design. The purpose of this article is to highlight four learning theories that are most commonly integrated into simulation-based learning activities and how they can be specifically and practically applied …

Social Justice Through Service-Learning In Parks & Recreation Management Education, Anne L. Demartini
Social Justice Through Service-Learning In Parks & Recreation Management Education, Anne L. Demartini
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
This practice-based approach argues service learning can teach social justice in parks & recreation management education. The US parks system creation and history is rooted in injustice. Use of US parks and park service employment remain inequitable today. Significant work must be done in the provision of recreation and park services to all members of the community, including those who have been traditionally marginalized or underserved. The industry requires recreation and parks professionals at all levels who are informed and intentional about inclusion and social justice, which starts with parks and recreation management education.
Service-learning, a form of experiential learning …

Developing Community Partnerships To Promote Social Justice-Related Learning Outcomes, Hilary Rasmussen
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
This case study advances two primary arguments about the relationship between experiential learning and social justice-oriented learning objectives: 1) a first step toward developing strategies and practices that foster justice-related learning outcomes is to partner with organizations that pursue social justice, and 2) effectively teaching social justice in a service-learning experience calls for classroom practices to embody an ethos of social justice in which students sustain a dialogic relationship with the community partner with both parties mutually contributing to the project. I elaborate on best practices for how to achieve clearer assessment of whether students have internalized the goals of …

Fundamentals Of Anthropology As Effective Experiential Learning Strategy To Promote Social Justice, Chelsea G. Abbas
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Experiential learning (EL) as it relates to the social sciences, involves going out into the community to conduct field studies or work with different groups who provide new approaches and collaborative perspectives to student learning. EL relies on the fact that students can communicate with distinct populations and oftentimes bridge cultural, linguistic, racial, generational, or geographical divides. As we emerge from a pandemic-induced social isolation into an increasingly siloed and divided political world, creating generative dialogue and skill sets to promote social activism and empathy for the common good is of utmost importance, especially for college students. Two EL experiences, …
