Slippery Near-Surface Layer Of The Ocean Arising Due To Daytime Solar Heating, Vladimir N. Kudryavtsev, Alexander Soloviev
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Measurements made in the Equatorial Atlantic during the 35th cruise of the R/V Akademic Vernadsky using a free-rising profiler and drifters revealed a near-surface slippery layer of the ocean arising due to daytime solar heating. The solar heating warms and stabilizes the surface layer of the ocean. This suppresses turbulent exchange and limits the penetration depth of the wind-induced turbulent mixing. The heated near-surface layer is then slipping over the underlying water practically without friction. At daytime warming of 1°C the resistance coefficient in the upper 5-m ocean, Cu = (U*/ΔUs)2 became …

Improving Science Vocabulary Of Six Grade Migrant Students Through A Program Of Intensive Direct Vocabulary Instruction, Melba Q. Moran
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The practicum proposal was directed at a targeted group of migrant sixth grade students who were performing below grade expectations in science. Remediation was provided in an effort to improve the migrant students’ comprehension and use of basic scientific terms. The remediation activities enabled students to develop comprehension through frequent purposeful drill and review of key scientific terms. Vocabulary was presented as an integrated activity. Pre and Posttest were administered to the migrant students. Mean scores showed at least a 20 percent increase in performance on unified science curriculum tests. Student grades also improve by at least one letter grade.

Development Of A Remedial Medication Administration Program For Newly Hired Nurses At A Veterans Administration Medical Center In Central Florida, Diane M. Lipe
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this study was to determine the medication administration proficiency of newly hired nurses at a large Department of Veterans Affairs (D.V.A.) Medical Center located in Bay Pines, Florida and to design a remedial education program in medication administration which would effectively meet specific deficiencies found in this population. Legal and professional mandates require proficiency in this domain of practice, yet nursing literature and recent experience by D.V.A. nurse educators have raised serious concern regarding the adequacy of nurses' proficiency in this area.
Research questions include: 1. What is the medication administration proficiency of newly hired nurses at …

Biozonation Of Deep-Water Lithoherms And Associated Hardgrounds In The Northeastern Straits Of Florida, Charles G. Messing, A. Conrad Neumann, Judith C. Lang
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Elongated carbonate mounds ("lithoherms") oriented parallel to prevailing northerly bottom currents at moderate depths (500-700 m) along the western margin of the Little Bahama Bank exhibit a consistent faunal zonation characterized by attached, suspension-feeding invertebrates. The four most abundant macroepibenthic groups (alcyonarians, crinoids, sponges and stylasterid hydrocorals) dominate all hard substrates examined except upcurrent ends and crests of lithoherms. We recognize three faunal zones on these mounds: a Coral Zone (Lophelia prolifera) restricted to the upcurrent end; a Zoanthid Zone (?Gerardia sp.) along upcurrent crests, and a Crinoid/Alcyonarian Zone along lithoherm flanks and downstream crests. Taxa characteristic of the latter …

In a major effort to alter improve the way in which new teachers receive actual classroom training, colleges and universities across the nation are implementing alternative models of teacher training other than the standard student teaching. Because of the public concerns about the competence of public school teachers and teacher training institutions, seven campuses of the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems offer approved internship programs.
The purposes of this study were (1) to identify nationally recognized internship programs, (2) to compare the internship programs differed in the selected universities within the CSU and UC systems, …

Increasing Verbal Participation And Self-Concept Through Teaching Across The Curriculum, Linda A. Wolfe
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The high percentage of students lacking verbal participation in schools and experiencing a low self-concept in an above achieving third grade class was addressed by the implementation of teaching strategies across the curriculum. The target group of 25 students was involved in social studies, science, and expressive language activities that were designed to increase verbal participation and self-concept. In addition, the target group engaged in weekly self-concept activities with the school counselor. The comparison of The Student Tally of Participation prior to and after implementation showed the average verbal participation measuring at 60 percent which was four percent above the …
An Analysis Of The Effect Of Sixteen Academic Variables On Completion And Noncompletion Of An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Karon Titus Overmeyer
An Analysis Of The Effect Of Sixteen Academic Variables On Completion And Noncompletion Of An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Karon Titus Overmeyer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The continuing decline in the number of applicants to nursing programs combined with the need to ensure that graduates are competent has made essential the development of reliable predictors that more fully assess the potential of all individuals in the restricted applicant pool. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to determine which admission and continuation criteria used by Broward Community College's (BCC) Nursing Program could be used as predictors for completion of the program and (2) to determine those students who are at-risk of not completing the nursing program. The independent variables for the study were five admission …

This practicum was designed to solve a problem related to the provision of a computer training component for students enrolled in an early childhood education teacher training program. Increasing pressures on graduates of the training program to integrate computers and educational software into programs for young children, as well as the students' interest in developing computer skills specifically related to early childhood education, made it necessary to design a computer training module which could be integrated into existing classroom hours in a tightly scheduled training program.
The writer surveyed the students in the training program in order to determine previous …
