Discrete Symmetries And Isosinglet Quarks In Low-Energy Supersymmetry, Diego Castano, Stephan P. Martin Dec 1994

Discrete Symmetries And Isosinglet Quarks In Low-Energy Supersymmetry, Diego Castano, Stephan P. Martin

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

Many extensions of the minimal supersymmetric standard model contain superfields for quarks which are singlets under weak isospin with electric charge -13. We explore the possibility that such isosinglet quarks have low or intermediate scale masses, but do not mediate rapid proton decay because of a discrete symmetry. By imposing the discrete gauge anomaly cancellation conditions, we show that the simplest way to achieve this is to extend the Z3 “baryon parity” of Ibáñez and Ross to the isosinglet quark superfields. This can be done in three distinct ways. This strategy is not consistent with grand unification with a …

Parameterization Of The Cool Skin Of The Ocean And Of The Air-Ocean Gas Transfer On The Basis Of Modeling Surface Renewal, Alexander Soloviev, Peter Schlüssel Jun 1994

Parameterization Of The Cool Skin Of The Ocean And Of The Air-Ocean Gas Transfer On The Basis Of Modeling Surface Renewal, Alexander Soloviev, Peter Schlüssel

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Heat and gas transport in molecular sublayers at the air-sea interface is governed by similar laws. A model of renewal type based on the physics of molecular sublayers allows the derivation of a parameterization of the temperature difference across the cool skin of the ocean and of the coefficient of the direct air-sea gas transfer. The surface Richardson number controls the transition from convective instability to wind-induced instability (“rollers” on breaking wavelets) and the Keulegan number controls the transition from the regime of rollers to long-wave breaking. A critical value of the surface Richardson number and of a nondimensional constant …

Renormalization Group Study Of The Standard Model And Its Extensions: The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, Diego Castano, E. J. Piard, P. Ramond May 1994

Renormalization Group Study Of The Standard Model And Its Extensions: The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, Diego Castano, E. J. Piard, P. Ramond

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

In this paper we summarize the minimal supersymmetric standard model as well as the renormalization group equations of its parameters. We proceed to examine the feasibility of the model when the breaking of supersymmetry is parametrized by the soft terms suggested by supergravity theories. In such models, the electroweak symmetry is exact at the tree level and is broken spontaneously at one-loop order. We make the additional assumption that the GUT-inspired relation mb=mτ be valid at the scale where the gauge coupling constants unify, which constrains the value of the top quark mass. For all types of …

Decade-Scale Trend In Sea Water Salinity Revealed Through Δ18o Analysis Of Montastraea Annularis Annual Growth Bands, Robert B. Halley, Peter Koenraad Swart, Richard E. Dodge, Harold J. Hudson May 1994

Decade-Scale Trend In Sea Water Salinity Revealed Through Δ18o Analysis Of Montastraea Annularis Annual Growth Bands, Robert B. Halley, Peter Koenraad Swart, Richard E. Dodge, Harold J. Hudson

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Stable oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of coral skeletons are influenced by ambient water temperature and by the oxygen isotope ratio in the surrounding sea water, which, in turn, is linked to evaporation (salinity) and precipitation. To investigate this relationship more thoroughly, we collected hourly temperature data from the Hen and Chickens Reef in the Florida Keys between 1975 and 1988 and compared them to the δ18O of Montastraea annularis skeleton that grew during the same interval. To ensure that we obtained the correct oxygen isotopic range in the skeleton we typically sampled the coral at a …

Perceptions Of Educational Quality Following A School Closing, Mari Kemis, Michael R. Simonson Jan 1994

Perceptions Of Educational Quality Following A School Closing, Mari Kemis, Michael R. Simonson

Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Financial conditions and new demands suggest that Iowa school districts will continually struggle to satisfy state and community needs. Given this situation and districts' opportunities for seeking alternative arrangements, the recent trend in school closings and district reorganization is likely to continue through the year 2000. This study examines how district reorganization or whole-grade sharing at the high school level affects perceptions of educational quality. The study focuses on the perceptions of students, teachers, parents, and citizens from selected pairs of Iowa school districts that have reo'ganized or are participating in whole-grade sharing arrangements. A total of 25 representative sites …
