Math And Politics: Analyzing Political Polling In 2008, Kelly Koziol

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Political polling was a hot topic in 2008 with an extended presidential primary election season and a historical presidential election in November. This research examines the quality of political polling during the presidential primary election season in an effort to predict which political polls would be most accurate in the general presidential election. This analysis was done using thousands of political polls from across the United States that were released to the public from a variety of sources. The statewide primary election polls themselves differed in a variety of ways and the data was stratified by many factors including: which …

Examination Stress Can Enhance Long Term Memory Performance, Randy Denis, Kara Faso

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The literature is currently unclear regarding the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation during examination periods. In addition, it is uncertain if a potential increase in cortisol influences memory processes during an academic examination. Here, we seek to better understand the complex relationship between examination stress and memory by testing both short-term and long-term memory 3 weeks prior to an examination period and then 15 minutes prior to an examination. We also assessed subjective measures of stress through self- report assessment of stress and physiological measures of stress through salivary cortisol levels during both periods. We found that participants reported to be …

Dna Fingerprinting And Whole Genome Replication For The Identification Of Bacteria, Justin Piacentino, Shilpa Kailas Apr 2009

Dna Fingerprinting And Whole Genome Replication For The Identification Of Bacteria, Justin Piacentino, Shilpa Kailas

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Prokaryotes are typically clonal in nature due to their rapid reproduction by binary fission, but some molecular genetics methods exist to differentiate various bacterial species. In this experiment, common bacteria were grown in nutrient broth before their DNA was extracted. Repetitive DNA sequences that are universal to a variety of bacteria were then targeted in the polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR) using ERIC primers. The bacterial DNA was then quantified using gel electrophoresis to form a ―fingerprint‖of distinct bands for each bacterial species. The Repli-g procedure was then performed to amplify the amount of DNA going into the REP-PCR replication, while testing …

A Study Of New Porous Molecular Frameworks And Their Adsorption And Desorption Properties, Sam Aminov, Jennifer Tejada

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Metal-organic Frameworks (MOF‘s) are porous materials comprised of organic buildingblocks bound to metal atoms. These compounds are finding applications in various fields of study including gas absorption, catalysis of specific reactions, and in drug delivery among others. Our emphasis has been placed on synthesizing and characterizing new frameworks with the use of bisl(arylimino)isoindolines (BAII‘s) as building blocks. Oneof these, NBAII(CuOAc), produced by reaction of NBAII with copper acetate, was analyzed for small molecular absorption and desorption. This particular framework was successful in the absorption of carbon tetrachloride and chloroform but failed to absorb pentane and toluene, while other organic solvents …

Acid Rain: Adversity On Atmospheric Carbon, Andrew Lister, Hannah Bromberg, Kayla Mancuso Apr 2009

Acid Rain: Adversity On Atmospheric Carbon, Andrew Lister, Hannah Bromberg, Kayla Mancuso

Undergraduate Student Symposium

―Acid Rain is the deposition of wet and dry acidic pollutants that have been shown tocause damage to the environment. Dissolved atmospheric carbon dioxide in clouds and rain undergoes a chemical reaction with water to form carbonic acid, thereby changing the pH of unpolluted rain water from 7.0 to 5.7. When unpolluted rain acquires additional acidity through the reactions of air pollutants with water, stronger acids are formed. Deposits from acid rain on the earth‘s surface have adverse effects on oceans, forests, soils, organisms, buildings and mankind. Acid rain clearly has an adverse affect on the carbon cycle of the atmosphere.

Developing Understanding Of Research-Based Pedagogy With Preservice Teachers: An Instrumental Case Study, Kathryn L. Laframboise, Kim Shea

The Qualitative Report

Preservice teachers have difficulty incorporating research-based instructional strategies and often revert to those observed during their own school years. This study describes how preservice teachers used a framework of planning, implementation, feedback, and reflection to try research-based teaching practices from their methods courses and examine their notions of effective pedagogy. This instrumental case study of 50 preservice teachers in a two-day-per-week field experience includes intensive interviews of six selected students. Findings include kinds of support reported as helpful in implementing new instructional strategies, difficulties experienced in the implementation of strategies, and new understandings of effective teaching during use of the …

Chebyshev Optimized Approximate Deconvolution Models Of Turbulence, Iuliana Stanculescu, William Layton Feb 2009

Chebyshev Optimized Approximate Deconvolution Models Of Turbulence, Iuliana Stanculescu, William Layton

Mathematics Faculty Articles

If the Navier–Stokes equations are averaged with a local, spacial convolution type filter,ϕ¯¯¯=gδ∗ϕ, the resulting system is not closed due to the filtered nonlinear termuu¯¯¯¯. An approximate deconvolution operator DD is a bounded linear operator which satisfies

u=D(u¯¯)+O(δα), Turn MathJaxon

where δδ is the filter width and α⩾2α⩾2. Using a deconvolution operator as an approximate filter inverse, yields the closure

uu¯¯¯¯=D(u¯¯)D(u¯¯)¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯+O(δα). Turn MathJaxon

The residual stress of this model (and related models) depends directly on the deconvolution error,u−D(u¯¯). This report derives deconvolution operators yielding an effective turbulence model, which minimize the deconvolution error for velocity fields with finite kinetic energy. …

Organizational Capabilities As Predictors Of Effective Knowledge Management: An Empirical Examination, Kimberly K. Anderson

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge management has become one of the most important trends in business, yet many knowledge management initiatives fail. To understand the success and failure of knowledge management, firms must identify and assess the organizational capabilities required for the effort to prosper, which is the focus of this study. Literature has offered important theoretical grounding for this study with regard to organizational capability as a predictor of knowledge management effectiveness, but empirical examination is lacking. The organizational capabilities have been identified as knowledge infrastructure capability (consisting of cultural, structural, and technological) and knowledge process capability (consisting of knowledge acquisition, conversion, application, …

Rapid Recovery Of A Coral Reef At Darwin Island, Galapagos Islands, Peter W. Glynn, Bernhard Riegl, Adrienne M. S. Correa, Iliana B. Baums Jan 2009

Rapid Recovery Of A Coral Reef At Darwin Island, Galapagos Islands, Peter W. Glynn, Bernhard Riegl, Adrienne M. S. Correa, Iliana B. Baums

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Surveys at Darwin Island in 2006 and 2007 have demonstrated that this northernmost Galapagos Islands coral reef has recovered significantly since the 1982–3 El Niño event. When first surveyed in 1975, this structural reef exhibited actively accreting frameworks of pocilloporid and poritid corals. The coral suffered severe mortality in 1983, resulting in the near total loss of pocilloporids and extensive partial mortality of poritid corals. Large sections of the reef had not recovered by 1992 and dead frameworks were subject to bio-erosion, although small numbers of sexual recruits of pocilloporid corals and numerous recruits plus regenerating patches of Porites lobata …

Markov Models For Linking Environments And Facies In Space And Time (Recent Arabian Gulf, Miocene Paratethys), Bernhard Riegl, Samuel J. Purkis

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

If, as comparative sedimentology maintains, knowledge of the Recent can sometimes be helpful to explain the past (and vice-versa), common quantitative denominators might exist between Recent and fossil systems. It may also be possible to describe dynamics and find linkages between space and time with a unique set of quantitative tools. To explore such conceptual links, spatial facies patterns mapped using satellite imagery were compared with temporal patterns in analogous ancient outcropping facies using Markov chains and graphs. Landsat and Ikonos satellite imagery was used to map benthic facies in a nearshore carbonate ramp (Ras Hasyan) and offshore platform system …

The Influence Of Artificial Reef Associated Fish Assemblages And Varying Substrates On Coral Recruitment, T. Patrick Quinn

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examined enhancing coral recruitment to artificial substrate by manipulating fish assemblages and the use of coral attractant substrates. One hundred sixty artificial reef modules were organized into 40 four-module replicate configurations (quads) of varying complexity to induce different fish assemblages. The deployment array consisted of the 40 quads, each in a square configuration with three to four-meter sides (approximately 1 m separation between modules) measured from the outside corners. The quads were divided into four fill treatments of differing complexity: Empty, Small, Mixed, and Large. Each quad had four potential coral attractant treatments on settlement plates: CaCO3, iron, …

New Perspectives On Ecological Mechanisms Affecting Coral Recruitment On Reefs, Raphael Ritson-Williams, Suzanne N. Arnold, Nicole D. Fogarty, Robert S. Steneck, Mark J. A. Vermeij, Valerie J. Paul

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Coral mortality has increased in recent decades, making coral recruitment more important than ever in sustaining coral reef ecosystems and contributing to their resilience. This review summarizes existing information on ecological factors affecting scleractinian coral recruitment. Successful recruitment requires the survival of coral offspring through sequential life history stages. Larval availability, successful settlement, and post-settlement survival and growth are all necessary for the addition of new coral individuals to a reef and ultimately maintenance or recovery of coral reef ecosystems. As environmental conditions continue to become more hostile to corals on a global scale, further research on fertilization ecology, connectivity, …

A Comparison Of The Rule And Case-Based Reasoning Approaches For The Automation Of Help-Desk Operations At The Tier-Two Level, Michael Forrester Bryant Jan 2009

A Comparison Of The Rule And Case-Based Reasoning Approaches For The Automation Of Help-Desk Operations At The Tier-Two Level, Michael Forrester Bryant

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory study investigates the hypothesis that case-based reasoning (CBR) systems have advantages over rule-based reasoning (RBR) systems in providing automated support for Tier-2 help desk operations. The literature suggests that rule-based systems are best suited for problem solving when the system being analyzed is a single-purpose, specialized system and the rules for solving the problems are clear and do not change with high frequency. Case-based systems, because of their ability to offer alternative solutions for a given problem, give help-desk technicians more flexibility. Specifically, this dissertation aims to answer the following questions:

1. Which paradigm, rule-based or case-based reasoning, …
