Blockade of the angiotensin (ANG) II receptor type 1 (AT(1)R) with angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) is widely used in the treatment of hypertension. However, ARBs are variably effective in reducing blood pressure, likely due, in part, to polymorphisms in the ARB binding pocket of the AT(1)R. Therefore, we need a better understanding of variations/polymorphisms that alter binding of ARBs in heterogeneous patient populations. The opossum proximal tubule cell (OKP) line is commonly used in research to evaluate renal sodium handling and therefore blood pressure. Investigating this issue, we found natural sequence variations in the opossum AT(1)R paralleling those observed in …
The Effect Of Pointe Shoe Toe Box Shape On Proprioception In Novice Ballet Dancers, Robert Cox, Valerie W. Herzog
The Effect Of Pointe Shoe Toe Box Shape On Proprioception In Novice Ballet Dancers, Robert Cox, Valerie W. Herzog
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the short-term effect of a pointe shoe toe box shape on proprioception in novice ballet dancers. Methods: Thirty-six female subjects completed the study (age = 13.2 + 2.2 years, height = 156.4 + 11.5 cm, weight = 46.6 + 9.4 kg). Subjects were assigned randomly to one of two groups. One group of 18 subjects was assigned to the tapered toe box pointe shoe, and the other group of 18 subjects was assigned to the square toe box pointe shoe. Subjects in each group were given a choice of any variation, …
The Thermoregulatory Theory Of Yawning: What We Know From Over Five Years Of Research, Andrew C. Gallup, Omar Tonsi Eldakar
The Thermoregulatory Theory Of Yawning: What We Know From Over Five Years Of Research, Andrew C. Gallup, Omar Tonsi Eldakar
Biology Faculty Articles
Over the past 5 years numerous reports have confirmed and replicated the specific brain cooling and thermal window predictions derived from the thermoregulatory theory of yawning, and no study has found evidence contrary to these findings. Here we review the comparative research supporting this model of yawning among homeotherms, while highlighting a recent report showing how the expression of contagious yawning in humans is altered by seasonal climate variation. The fact that yawning is constrained to a thermal window of ambient temperature provides unique and compelling support in favor of this theory. Heretofore, no existing alternative hypothesis of yawning can …

Water Adequacy As An Essential Element For Empowering People, Nan Palmer, Ph.D.
ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law
"Water is essential for life."' Safe drinking water is so imperative that without it human beings can only survive for just two to four days; even less if compromised by ill health, heat, and other impinging conditions.

Implementation Of Supplemental Instruction For Physical Therapist Students In An Exercise Physiology Course, Kim Levenhagen, Cheryl Cavallo, Ethel Frese, Ginge Kettenbach, Elaine Wilder
Implementation Of Supplemental Instruction For Physical Therapist Students In An Exercise Physiology Course, Kim Levenhagen, Cheryl Cavallo, Ethel Frese, Ginge Kettenbach, Elaine Wilder
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
An ongoing challenge for faculty is to determine effective and efficient mechanisms for assisting students to achieve academic success. Supplemental Instruction (SI), a form of peer tutoring, has been defined as a peer-led academic assistance program that targets difficult courses and is offered to students enrolled in those courses. Based on student feedback that exercise physiology is difficult, the authors chose this course in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curriculum for this post-only pilot study. SI was offered over a three-year period to physical therapist students enrolled in an exercise physiology course. The purposes of this study were to …

The Effects Of Computerized Smell Of Memory, Brandon Spencer
The Effects Of Computerized Smell Of Memory, Brandon Spencer
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
It has long been recognized that there is a major correlation between smell and memory. Until recently, commercialized multi-sensory experiences involving olfaction were limited to non-computerized mediums. Companies that manufacture computerized scent technologies tout the educational benefits of their product, yet prior to this study, there appeared to be no scholarly research in regard to the efficacy of computerized scent producing peripherals in educational environments. The aim of this research was to determine the odor memory enhancement benefits of incorporating olfactory, computerized peripherals into computerized multimedia-learning environments, from both a context dependent and context independent stand point. Specifically, within a …
