Qualitative And Quantitative Approaches To The Study Of Poverty: Taming The Tensions And Appreciating The Complementarities, Sulaiman Y. Balarabe Kura May 2012

Qualitative And Quantitative Approaches To The Study Of Poverty: Taming The Tensions And Appreciating The Complementarities, Sulaiman Y. Balarabe Kura

The Qualitative Report

There is a germane relationship between qualitative and quantitative approaches to social science research. The relationship is empirically and theoretically demonstrated by poverty researchers. The study of poverty, as argued in this article, is a study of both numbers and contextualities. This article provides a general overview of qualitative and quantitative approaches to poverty studies and argues that only a combination of the two approaches, where necessary, would provide a robust, rich and reliable data for researching issues of poverty. Hence, the contemporary drive towards a mixed methods approach in poverty research is not only welcomed but certainly timely as …

Assessment Of The Utilization Of Hiv Interventions By Sex Workers In Selected Brothels In Bangladesh: An Exploratory Study, Nafisa Lira Huq, Mahbub Elahi Chowdhury

The Qualitative Report

In this qualitative study of brothel-based Female Sex Workers (FSWs), the authors explored factors that influence safe sex practices of FSWs within an integrated HIV intervention. Qualitative methods, including focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews and key informant interviews were applied in four brothels in Bangladesh. Young and elderly FSWs, Sordarnis (Madams who own young FSWs and who may be either active or inactive sex workers themselves), program managers and providers were the participants for this study. Findings showed that condom use was high but not consistent among bonded FSWs (those who are under the control of a Sordarni) who …

Red Sea Coral Reef Trajectories Over 2 Decades Suggest Increasing Community Homogenization And Decline In Coral Size, Bernhard Riegl, Andrew W. Bruckner, Gwilym Rowlands, Samuel J. Purkis, Philip Renaud May 2012

Red Sea Coral Reef Trajectories Over 2 Decades Suggest Increasing Community Homogenization And Decline In Coral Size, Bernhard Riegl, Andrew W. Bruckner, Gwilym Rowlands, Samuel J. Purkis, Philip Renaud

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Three independent line intercept transect surveys on northern Red Sea reef slopes conducted in 1988/9 and 1997/8 in Egypt and from 2006–9 in Saudi Arabia were used to compare community patterns and coral size. Coral communities showed scale-dependent variability, highest at fine spatial and taxonomic scale (species-specific within and among reef patterns). At coarser scale (generic pattern across regions), patterns were more uniform (regionally consistent generic dominance on differently exposed reef slopes and at different depths). Neither fine- nor coarse-scale patterns aligned along the sampled 1700 km latitudinal gradient. Thus, a latitudinal gradient that had been described earlier from comparable …

Economic Aid And Conflict Transformation In Northern Ireland And The Border Area: Respondents’ Perceptions Of Awareness, Fairness, Trust Building, And Sustainability, Peter Karari, Sean Byrne, Olga Skarlato, Kawser Ahmed

Peace and Conflict Studies

Intractable ethnopolitical conflicts emanate from the social, political, cultural, and economic marginalization of some community groups. To address these conflicts, the affected groups are often provided with life changing opportunities to enhance justice, equality, dignity and freedom. In the past, Northern Ireland has been a turbulent sea of violent conflict between Unionists and Nationalists. To address the underlying root causes of the conflict, economic aid through the International Fund for Ireland (IFI) and the European Union (EU) Peace II Fund is aimed at facilitating sustainable peacebuilding, reconciliation and community development. In this study, 95 community group leaders, civil servants, and …

Faith-Based Peacebuilding: A Case Study Of The National Council Of Churches Of Kenya, John Mwangi Githigaro

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article explores the peacebuilding contribution of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), following the post-2007 election violence in Kenya. Faith-based organizations are increasingly taking an active role in peacebuilding in conflict prone and affected societies. The paper presents research findings that the NCCK perceived that it was positively involved in areas of humanitarian assistance and building of bridges among communities divided by the violence. The paper contextualizes the triggers or the causes of the post-election violence in Kenya after the December 2007 elections and offers suggestions for peaceful co-existence.

Marketing Metaphoria: Undressing The Mind Of The Consumer, Vickie Covington Apr 2012

Marketing Metaphoria: Undressing The Mind Of The Consumer, Vickie Covington

The Qualitative Report

The book by Gerald Zaltman and Lindsay Zaltman (2008), Marketing Metaphoria: What Deep Metaphors Reveal about the Minds of Consumers, builds on the premise that most thoughts are unconscious and what people think are actually in frames of pictures, not necessarily words. The authors focus on seven deep metaphors in which they believe is the key to understanding consumer’s minds and thus that marketing firms and managers can truly understand what consumer’s desire and need. These seven deep metaphors are explained in detail and are the meat of this book. Mr. Zaltman has conducted several thousand qualitative inquiries using his …

Spousal Caregiver Narratives And Credible Authority: Uncertainty In Illness Of Spousal Caregivers, Karen Sodowsky Apr 2012

Spousal Caregiver Narratives And Credible Authority: Uncertainty In Illness Of Spousal Caregivers, Karen Sodowsky

The Qualitative Report

This article is taken from a larger longitudinal study that used caregiver interviews, caregiver surveys, and caregiver statistical information of one community. The interviews were conducted with six spousal caregivers to examine the narratives produced by spouses actively caring for their partners with dementia. The spousal caregivers were interviewed multiple times over approximately 12 to 18 months. The author was the caregiver counselor and had worked in the community in social services for fifteen years. The narratives were analyzed using a phenomenological approach that allowed the development of descriptions of uncertainty and sharing caregiver narratives with a specialized audience. The …

Protein 14-3-3 Eta Is Essential For Normal Meiotic Spindle Assembly In Mouse Eggs, Santanu De, Shawn Davis, Daniel Letwin, Cyrus Mozena, Douglas Kline

Biology Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The 14-3-3 proteins constitute a family of conserved, acidic proteins in a variety of organisms, regulating important intracellular events including cell cycle control, apoptosis, signal transduction and embryonic development. However, little is known about the functions of 14-3-3 in mammalian reproduction. There are seven mammalian isoforms of 14-3-3 (beta, gamma, epsilon, eta, zeta, tau/theta and sigma) encoded by different genes. We previously reported accumulation and co-localization of a specific isoform of 14-3-3, namely 14-3-3 eta, in the region of meiotic spindle apparatus in mouse eggs. To determine the role of 14-3-3 eta, we microinjected mouse oocytes with a translation-blocking morpholino …

Participation in the climb on Mt. Kilimanjaro provided an opportunity for the women to (a) nurture priorities, (b) foster self-belief, and (c) …

A Case Of Mistaken Identity In The Pathogenesis Of Type 1 Diabetes, Lynette Miller Apr 2012

A Case Of Mistaken Identity In The Pathogenesis Of Type 1 Diabetes, Lynette Miller

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This paper will review what happens physiologically when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, resulting in the onset of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. The immune system is designed to fight infection and viruses, but in the case of diabetes, it responds inappropriately by targeting normal body cells and tissues. The hormone insulin is produced by specialized islet cells in the pancreas and is essential for glucose metabolism. When the body does not produce insulin, it cannot control blood glucose levels and therefore, patients must rely on subcutaneous insulin injections or continuous infusion with …

Adhesion Of Albumin To Fda Type Ii Soft Contact Lenses, Youstina Harkas, Maryam Harkas, Danielle Cooper, Jessica Nichols

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Human tears have over 60 different proteins that deposit on contact lenses. Protein deposits on contact lenses can cause conjunctival irritation and bacterial infection. The adhesion of albumin to omafilcon and hilafilcon soft contact lenses was examined. Lenses were incubated for 1 - 4 days in a 2.0 mg/dl albumin solution. The protein concentration in the incubation vials and protein deposition on the lenses was determined each day by bicinchoninic acid assay. Albumin deposited on the omafilcon lenses in a steadily increasing fashion, while the albumin concentration in the incubation solution decreased. Albumin deposited on the hilafilcon lenses in a …

Antibacterial Properties Of Meso-Substituted Cationic And Anionic Porphyrins, Mohamad Elchurafa Apr 2012

Antibacterial Properties Of Meso-Substituted Cationic And Anionic Porphyrins, Mohamad Elchurafa

Undergraduate Student Symposium

In the conducted research work we tested various synthetic meso-substituted cationic and anionic porphyrin’s antibacterial properties on gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains. Previous in vitro studies suggest that meso-substituted cationic porphyrins demonstrate effective antibacterial properties on gram negative strains; in contrast, anionic meso-substitued porphyrins prove to be efficient antibacterial agents with gram positive strains. Evidence suggests that the porphyrin’s charge predisposes its reactivity on the bacteria’s cell membrane, thus immobilizes reproduction at the site of administration. An antibiogram test was coordinated by way of diffusimetric method. Filter paper disks were impregnated with a specific metallated porphyrin and dispensed …

Attitudes Towards Business Ethics: A Study Of Austrian Student Views, Dominique Wimmer Apr 2012

Attitudes Towards Business Ethics: A Study Of Austrian Student Views, Dominique Wimmer

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The Attitudes Towards Business Ethics Questionnaire (ATBEQ) has been used extensively to measure respondent views towards ethical business philosophies and situations. This study reports the ATBEQ survey results for a sample of 171 Austrian students. Results indicate that Austrian students believe that while morality is important in the business environment, the business world operates under its own set of rules. This thinking fits with an ethical business philosophy leading towards Machiavellianism. In addition, Austrian respondents reported support for an unethical decision, which unfairly favors the individual financially at the expense of an insurance company. These and other results are discussed …

Because You're A Good Man... Right?: A Deconstructive Analysis Of Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", Dan Abella Apr 2012

Because You're A Good Man... Right?: A Deconstructive Analysis Of Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", Dan Abella

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The meaning and “correct” use of semantic opposites––up:down, male:female, black:white, and good:evil, for example––seem obvious and uncontested in casual speech. Yet the understanding of such pairs remains anything but simple according to deconstructionist critical theory. Founded by French philosopher Jacques Derrida, deconstruction, employed as a literary and linguistic analysis, revels in the uncertainty of language, especially in the dynamic “play” of binary opposites. Hence, Derrida's theories broaden the possibilities of meaning in speech and writing by refusing to ascribe absolute referents to words. Flannery O'Connor's landmark short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” thoroughly meditates on …

Bilingual Text Comprehension, Irina Cossio, Belkis L. Rivas Apr 2012

Bilingual Text Comprehension, Irina Cossio, Belkis L. Rivas

Undergraduate Student Symposium

There are competing theories regarding how bilingual individuals process language. The language selectivity view suggests that bilinguals only activate the language being used at that moment; therefore only one language is active in the brain at once. Other views, such as the language non-selectivity view, suggest that both languages are activated regardless of which language may be in use. Recent studies have provided evidence that both languages may be activated depending upon the context. Context is important because research examining monolinguals has shown that the left hemisphere is associated with processing contextually appropriate words such as inferences strongly implied by …

Biomechanical Justification For Training Rowers With The Power Clean, Jada Buckner, Anamaria Cretu, Kyle Gyarfas Apr 2012

Biomechanical Justification For Training Rowers With The Power Clean, Jada Buckner, Anamaria Cretu, Kyle Gyarfas

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The main objective when training athletes is to base strength and conditioning programs on the needs and goals of the athlete and the team. This ensures that programs are sport-specific. The power clean (a specific strength training exercise) is seen by coaches as mimicking the technique and demands of the rowing stroke itself, and thus is commonplace in the strength and conditioning programs of rowers. However, the power clean has not been formally or biomechanically justified for specificity of training with rowers. The purpose of this study is compare body technique and muscle use between the power clean lift and …
