Applying Constant Comparative Method With Multiple Investigators And Inter-Coder Reliability, Joel D. Olson, Chad Mcallister, Lynn D. Grinnell, Kimberly Gehrke Walters, Frank Appunn
The Qualitative Report
Building on practice, action research, and theory, the purpose of this paper is to present a 10-step method for applying the Constant Comparative Method (CCM) of grounded theory when multiple researchers perform data analysis and meaning making. CCM is a core qualitative analysis approach for grounded theory research. Literature suggests approaches for increasing the credibility of CCM using multiple researchers and inter-coder reliability (ICR), but documentation of methods for collaboration on CCM data analysis is sparse. The context for developing the10-step CCM approach was a qualitative study conducted to understand the impact of webcams on a virtual team. To develop …

Qualitative Descriptive Study Of The Experiences Of Nurse Educators In Developing And Implementing Concurrent Enrollment Adn-Bsn Programs, Janice Evans Hawkins
Qualitative Descriptive Study Of The Experiences Of Nurse Educators In Developing And Implementing Concurrent Enrollment Adn-Bsn Programs, Janice Evans Hawkins
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Nursing leaders have called for more bachelor-of-science-in-nursing-(BSN)-prepared nurses to meet workforce demands. There is limited capacity in BSN programs to meet the projected demand. Currently, associate degree in nursing (ADN) programs produce the majority of registered nurses. To increase the number of BSN graduates, nurse educators recommend innovative educational models for seamless progression from the ADN to the BSN. Concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN programs offer one potential model to produce more BSN graduates. The purpose of this study was to describe the process of developing and implementing concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN programs. The research question was as follows: What is the experience …

Emotional Intelligence And Empathy Of Nursing Students In An Immersive Capstone Clinical Course, Michelle L. Finch
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background. Today’s baccalaureate nursing students need to be prepared to care for patients in an ever-changing, high acuity environment. Many programs offer a capstone immersive clinical experience. However, the benefits of this experience have not been fully explored, and the effect on patient care is unknown. Purpose. The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a change in levels of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and empathy in senior students who completed a capstone immersive clinical experience in the final semester of a baccalaureate nursing program. Theoretical Framework. The theoretical framework for this study was the Mayer and Salovey’s …

Initiating A Perinatal Depression Screening Protocol In A Community-Based Hospital, Mari Seidu
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), perinatal depression (PD) is the most common childbirth complication. About 10% of pregnant women and about 13% of postpartum women experience a mental health disorder, primarily depression (WHO, 2016). One of the WHO (2015 a) goals for maternal mental health includes providing strategies for the promotion of psychosocial well-being and prevention of mental disorders of mothers during and after delivery. Purpose: The purpose of this performance improvement project was to establish a perinatal depression risk screening protocol and improve nursing knowledge on PD at a community-based hospital in Miami. Theoretical Framework: Beck’s …

Child Abuse, Intimate Partner Violence, And Resiliency In Incarcerated Women: Attachment As A Ptsd Moderator, Cassandra Groth
Theses and Dissertations
Child abuse (CA) is an epidemic that often leads to mental health outcomes including increased vulnerability to future victimization and intimate partner violence (IPV) (Briere & Elliot, 2003). The purpose of this study was to determine if CA would have more of a psychological impact on IPV survivors who had experienced CA than those who had not. Another purpose of this study was to evaluate secure attachment as a form of resiliency and insecure attachment as a risk factor for developing post-traumatic stress. It was hypothesized that incarcerated female survivors of IPV would have a significantly higher proportion of CA …
Impact Of Parental Interference On Children In High Conflict Divorce, Kelly D. Painter
Impact Of Parental Interference On Children In High Conflict Divorce, Kelly D. Painter
Theses and Dissertations
Parental interference in high conflict divorce cases continues to evoke much debate among mental health professionals in the forensic psychology field. Although over the past thirty years, some empirical studies have been conducted regarding the long-term psychological impact of adults that experienced parental interference as children, few studies have examined the impact that this phenomenon has on children during and immediately following divorce proceedings. The present study utilized an original data set that was collected with fifty-five families (e.g., mother, father, and oldest child) from de-identified reports completed by two private Court-appointed licensed clinical-forensic psychologists. The overarching purpose of the …
Toward A Model Of 12-Step Engagement: Predicting Recovery Involvement In Narcotics Anonymous, Hillary L. Howrey
Toward A Model Of 12-Step Engagement: Predicting Recovery Involvement In Narcotics Anonymous, Hillary L. Howrey
Theses and Dissertations
Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect a significant portion of the population and are noteworthy public health concerns. Mutual help organizations (MHOs) such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are considered evidence-based practices for SUDs. Despite a growing body of research examining mechanisms of change in MHOs, relatively few investigations of 12-step organizations have been theory-driven. Theory-based models of recovery provide a more comprehensive view of the range of individual factors affecting individuals in recovery and how and why they might engage in recovery-related behaviors. Stress and coping theory fills a gap in explaining how improvements occur as a result of …

Exploratory Factor Analysis Of The Nova Multilingual Neuropsychological Battery (Nmnb), Annelly Bure-Reyes
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the underlying factor structure of the Nova Multilingual Neuropsychological Battery (NMNB) and evaluated the influence of demographic variables such as language fluency and acculturation on test performance. The NMNB is a comprehensive test designed to measure cognitive abilities in Spanish/English bilinguals. The instrument was developed taking into consideration cultural variables believed to influence neuropsychological test performance and it includes a Spanish and an English version. It is comprised of tasks measuring abilities such as short and long term memory, executive functioning, motor skills, visuo-spatial abilities, arithmetic, and vocabulary. The study included 155 participants (71 English monolinguals and …
The Impact Of Drop-In Centers On The Long Term Mentally Ill, Marissa Snell
The Impact Of Drop-In Centers On The Long Term Mentally Ill, Marissa Snell
Theses and Dissertations
Drop-in centers for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness offer a unique and perhaps under-recognized environment option for adjunct treatment. The current study examines and evaluates components thought to be a part of an enriched drop-in center experience that contribute to positive member outcomes through the effects of empowerment. These components include self-help, peer support, and creative expression. Outcomes were evaluated based on quality of life, self-worth, and symptom reduction. Such data are necessary in promoting the growth and development of drop-in centers and identification of components that contribute to positive member outcomes. Participants (n=101) were administered a series …

Effect Of Stance Symmetry On Perturbation-Induced Protective Stepping In Persons Poststroke And Controls, Katherine M. Martinez
Effect Of Stance Symmetry On Perturbation-Induced Protective Stepping In Persons Poststroke And Controls, Katherine M. Martinez
Department of Physical Therapy Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Problem Statement: Stepping is a common strategy after a perturbation. Stroke survivors display a predilection for stepping with non-paretic leg. Insight into induced stepping between stroke survivors and age-matched control may guide our understanding for reactive postural control training post stroke. Purpose: To investigate the difference in perturbation-induced stepping between chronic stroke survivors and age-matched controls at three phases of the stepping response: preparation, execution, and landing and association with clinical outcome measures. Procedure: Twenty-one community-dwelling chronic stroke survivors (mean age 59y/o ±13yrs) and 17 age- and gender-matched controls (mean age 54.4y/o ±17yrs) completed this study. Clinical measures of gait, …
