Good People Don't Need Medication: How Moral Character Beliefs Affect Medical Decision-Making, Sydney Elizabeth Scott, Justin F. Landy Nov 2019

Good People Don't Need Medication: How Moral Character Beliefs Affect Medical Decision-Making, Sydney Elizabeth Scott, Justin F. Landy

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

How do people make decisions? Prior research focuses on how people's cost-benefit assessments affect which medical treatments they choose. We propose that people also worry about what these health decisions signal about who they are. Across four studies, we find that medication is thought to be the "easy way out", signaling a lack of willpower and character. These moral beliefs lower the appeal of medications. Manipulating these beliefs--by framing medication as a signal of superior willpower or by highlighting the idea that treatment choice is just a preference--increases preferences for medication.

Teaching Qualitative Research Methods Online: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Chareen Snelson Nov 2019

Teaching Qualitative Research Methods Online: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Chareen Snelson

The Qualitative Report

Online education has become well established as an avenue for flexible access to educational opportunities. Those who teach qualitative research methods online may find it difficult to locate research or best practice literature to inform practice. A scoping review was conducted to identify and synthesize the literature about teaching qualitative research methods courses online. Eleven peer-reviewed journal articles were identified through a scoping review of the literature. The TPACK framework, which defines teacher knowledge in terms of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge, was used as a conceptual framework. Results from this scoping review indicate that online qualitative research methods educators …

Healthy Older Adults’ Motivation And Knowledge Related To Food And Meals, Kai Victor Hansen

The Qualitative Report

The population over 60 years old is growing rapidly in Norway and in many other countries, and researchers often focus on elderly people and various diseases. This article examines the healthy elderly who are active in their daily lives to understand their motivation and knowledge about food and meals. The method used was CurroCus® group interviews, or fast focus groups. Nine CurroCus® groups were conducted, lasting for 37 to 56 minutes (average = 45 minutes). Altogether, 76 persons participated, ranging in age from 60 to 87 years; participants were predominantly female (>80%). The article discusses two areas: motivation and …

Increasing The Health Outcomes Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Oklahomans Through Tobacco Awareness And Cessation Support, Sharon Baker, Glenna Cooper, Jimmy Mitchell, Judy Morgan

JADARA

As a consequence of limited access to health information, Deaf and hard of hearing (Deaf/ hh)’ individuals may be at higher risk for health complications and tobacco-related diseases. To address this issue, Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) of Oklahoma sought funding from the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust to implement the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Tobacco Use and Cessation Program. The five-year project began in 2006; it was the first major health education initiative in the state that focused on the Deaf community. Prevalence rates and demographic information were collected regarding tobacco use among Deaf/hh participants. In addition, …

The Effect Of Mothers’ Asl Skill Level On The English Literacy Of Their Deaf Children, Shauna M. Buchholz, Lorin Lachs, Patrick Boudreault Nov 2019

The Effect Of Mothers’ Asl Skill Level On The English Literacy Of Their Deaf Children, Shauna M. Buchholz, Lorin Lachs, Patrick Boudreault

JADARA

Previous studies demonstrated a positive relationship between deaf children's ASL acquisition and their English literacy skills and the importance of parental language input. This study examined the role of mothers' ASL skill in the English literacy skills of their deaf children. Mothers and their deaf children in grades six through nine took the TGJASL-R. Correlations were performed to determine if a relationship exists between the mothers' ASL skill level, and the children's English literacy measured by the STAR test. No significant relationship was found; marginal significance was found between the students' ASL skill and their English literacy score.

Childhood Trauma: Considering Diagnostic And Culturally Sensitive Treatment Approaches For Deaf Clients, Tomina Schwenke Nov 2019

Childhood Trauma: Considering Diagnostic And Culturally Sensitive Treatment Approaches For Deaf Clients, Tomina Schwenke

JADARA

As the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR, 1994) is under revision, the complexity of diagnosing and treating childhood trauma with the current trauma-related diagnoses, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)is being debated (van der Kolk,2 005). Regarding deaf individuals, significant differences in symptom presentation (e.g., avoidance/numbing, hyperarousal, and re-experiencing symptoms) suggest that caution is needed when using the current criterion for the diagnosis of PTSD within this population (Schild & Dalenberg, 2011). Despite diagnostic uncertainties, it is generally accepted that regardless of hearing status, early childhood is a critical period for the development …

Knowledge is integrated in the context of mental health practitioners who work with deaf and hard of hearing people. Several themes including disability meanings, communication, family dynamics, and macro accessibility and representation are identified as topics to be applied to current mental health practice and future mental health research related to spirituality among deaf and hard of hearing people.

Service-Learning In Deaf Studies: Integrating Academia And The Deaf Community, Jody H. Cripps, Sheryl B. Cooper Nov 2019

Service-Learning In Deaf Studies: Integrating Academia And The Deaf Community, Jody H. Cripps, Sheryl B. Cooper

JADARA

The pedagogy of Service-Learning is a new addition to the field of Deaf Studies. As a new and non-traditional course, the implementation of a Deaf Studies Service-Learning course is a challenging task. One challenge is to develop several multi-directional relationships between the faculty member, students, deaf consumers, and community partners from deaf- related rehabilitation agencies. Another issue is addressing the major challenges identified in the Service-Learning literature. Utilizing recommendations made by an experienced faculty member, these challenges are surmountable. This combination of in-class and out-of-class pedagogy enriches Deaf Studies students' learning experience serving the deaf consumers in "real world" settings.

Contemporary Society And The Issues Facing Deaf Baby Boomers When Compared To Their Hearing Counterparts: A Review, Timothy J. Ainger, Elizabeth Romero, David M. Feldman

JADARA

In today's society, it is important for researchers and practitioners to note that the generation known as the Baby Boomers is more than a socio-demographic clump; it represents a significant part of the population. This paper will be reviewing the issues facing the deaf baby boomer’s population and how they are contrasted to their hearing counterparts. The areas examined include social/political, technological, physical health care, and mental healthcare. In each area, this paper aims to illustrate that it can sometimes be difficult for deaf individuals in the baby boomer generation to find and utilize any number of societal resources.

Employment And Independent Living Skills Of Public School High School Deaf Students: Analyses Of The Transition Competence Battery Response Patterns, Pamela Luft Nov 2019

Employment And Independent Living Skills Of Public School High School Deaf Students: Analyses Of The Transition Competence Battery Response Patterns, Pamela Luft

JADARA

The Transition Competence Battery was used to study employment and independent living skill preparation of 38 of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students from four public high school programs. Participants demonstrated substantial needs in performing standard computations, in recognizing common terminology and across several independent living competencies. Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant improvements in two subtest scores for employment subtests with none for independent living. Poor overall competency levels suggest that vocational rehabilitation counselors should expect some skill and training needs. This assessment may assist in identifying needs that impact career success.

Engaging Deaf Persons With Language And Learning Challenges And Sexual Offending Behaviors In Sex Offender-Oriented Mental Health Treatment, Neil S. Glickman, Catherine M. Smith, Susan Lemere

JADARA

The authors present a framework and practical strategies for engaging deaf persons who have language and learning challenges as well as sexual offending behaviors in sex offender oriented mental health treatment. Current treatment approaches for persons who commit sexual offenses are reviewed along with modifications that have been made for persons with intellectual impairments. The additional challenges when the persons referred are deaf and poor language users are explored. The treatment resources for helping this sub group of deaf persons with highly specialized needs are limited, and the common fallacy that a "signing clinician" with some knowledge of sexual offending …

The Bioethics Of Providing Cochlear Implants To Children: Informed Choices And Autonomous Decision-Making, Katherine Mascia, John Mascia Nov 2019

The Bioethics Of Providing Cochlear Implants To Children: Informed Choices And Autonomous Decision-Making, Katherine Mascia, John Mascia

JADARA

The significant advances in technology and educational options for children who are deaf present a parent with opportunities to make choices on behalf of their child. The variability in overall results for all available options and the long-term implications of decisions made early in a child's life make it necessary for parents to utilize an objective process. A framework for ensuring the parent's right to make decisions on behalf of their child will be discussed using five principles of bioethics. Points of controversy regarding the use of cochlear implants as well as the use of American Sign Language (ASL) will …

The Deaf Off Drugs & Alcohol (DODA) Program provides culturally appropriate recovery services via e-therapy to Deaf and hard of hearing (HH) individuals with substance use disorder (SUD). In the first three years DODA was providing services,149 consumers (107 Deaf, 42 HH) received treatment. A retrospective secondary data analysis sought to examine the lifetime prevalence of suicidal behavior in Deaf individuals receiving alcohol and drug treatment services from the DODA program. The prevalence of self-reported lifetime suicide attempts in the Deaf sample was 42.1%, higher than rates reported for other subgroups with coexisting conditions. Suicidal ideation was reported by 50.5% …

Mental Health Services For The Deaf: A Focus Group Study In New York’S Capital Region, Heather K. Horton, Hee Chul Kim, Marley Mills Nov 2019

Mental Health Services For The Deaf: A Focus Group Study In New York’S Capital Region, Heather K. Horton, Hee Chul Kim, Marley Mills

JADARA

Improved functioning is typical when deaf mental health consumers are removed from inaccessible programming and placed in accessible environments. Observed gains have long-provided convincing evidence that social interaction (in sign language) is essential to recovery from mental illness. Still, many deaf people reside in psychiatric settings alongside others with whom they cannot communicate. A focus group was convened to investigate services in New York's Capital Region. Identified barriers included lack of deaf clinicians, scarcity of qualified mental health interpreters, and funding restrictions. Grass-root efforts are needed to advocate for increased accessibility and a fuller range of treatment options for deaf …

The Identity Development Of The Only Hearing Child In An All-Deaf Family, Audrey Frank Nov 2019

The Identity Development Of The Only Hearing Child In An All-Deaf Family, Audrey Frank

JADARA

This article focuses on identity development among individuals who grew up as the only hearing child in an otherwise all-deaf family. Being the only hearing child (assuming they have deaf siblings) is quite different from being one of a number of hearing children of deaf parents. It is critical to enhance awareness among parents, teachers, and mental health professionals of such obstacles, particularly for children who are the only hearing members of their deaf families.
