Preparation For The Delivery Of Telemental Health Services With Individuals Who Are Deaf: Informed Consent And Providers Procedure Guidelines, Michael John Gournaris
Preparation For The Delivery Of Telemental Health Services With Individuals Who Are Deaf: Informed Consent And Providers Procedure Guidelines, Michael John Gournaris
JADARA
Telemental health continues to emerge as the new wave of the modem health care delivery system, and psychotherapy sessions will routinely take place with geographically distant therapists and clients who are deaf or hard of hearing. Consequently, there is a critical need for best practices for such services including the development of informed consent and provider procedure guidelines for the telemental health delivery system serving this population. Sample informed consent forms and telemental health service guidelines are provided.
Gender Differences In Victimization Among Youths With And Without Hearing Loss Admitted To Substance Abuse Treatment, Janet C. Titus
Gender Differences In Victimization Among Youths With And Without Hearing Loss Admitted To Substance Abuse Treatment, Janet C. Titus
JADARA
The purpose of this study is to examine gender differences in the victimization profiles of deaf and hard of hearing youths presenting to substance abuse treatment and compare them with parallel profiles from their hearing peers. Intake data on 111 deaf and hard of hearing youths (42% female) was analyzed and compared with that from a weighted gender matched sample of hearing youths. Results indicate the victimization histories of the deaf and hard of hearing girls were more severe than those of their male peers. Although the same pattern was observed in the hearing group, the strength of the difference …
College Drinking Among Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Teresa Crowe Mason, James Schiller
College Drinking Among Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Teresa Crowe Mason, James Schiller
JADARA
College drinking has been the focus of numerous studies and public scrutiny in recent years (Associated Press, 2004; Core Institute,2003; Harvard School of Public Health, 2002; O'Hare,1997). Alcohol abuse is associated with psychological problems (e.g. depression, suicide, and anxiety), interpersonal issues (such as violent behavior and unplanned sex), and social problems (drunk driving) (Mohler-Kuo, Dowdall, Koss, & Weschsler,2004; O'Hare,1997; Paschall, 2003; Perkins, 2002). The aim of this study was to investigate the negative consequences associated with drinking alcohol among deaf and hard of hearing college students. In addition, the researchers gathered information regarding the students' ideas about alcohol prevention for …

Transliterating The Sf-12 For The Deaf Community’S Use: A Pilot Study, Melanie C. Nakaji, Georgia Robins Sadler, Karen Clark, Kelly Kynaston, Anahita Ezeddin-Lou
JADARA
This paper describes the methodological process involved in the transliteration, from English into American Sign Language, of the 12-item Short Form Health Survey, and gives an example of how these future physicians can work with members of the Deaf community to improve the community's overall health and wellbeing. The paper will also provide clear evidence of the need for strong support for research, as well as the need for widespread collaboration and participation on the part of the Deaf community.

The Mental Health Needs And Perspectives Of Culturally Deaf Older Adults Living In Two Counties In Florida, David M. Feldman, William Kearns
JADARA
The objective of this study was to develop an understanding of the perceptions and needs of Deaf older adults related to mental health services in their communities. There has been little research on this population and few studies have been published that explore mental health and the Deaf older adult population. A survey of two associations for the Deaf in Florida sampled attitudes of participants who were 55 years old or above and considered themselves to be "culturally Deaf." Questions were developed to better understand the perspectives of Deaf older adults related to current availability of services, desire for services, …

Employment And Quality Of Life In Adults Who Are Deaf, Sara Thompson, Susan R. Easterbrooks
Employment And Quality Of Life In Adults Who Are Deaf, Sara Thompson, Susan R. Easterbrooks
JADARA
Research shows that work is closely related to self-esteem (Walter, 1993). Yet many young people who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are choosing not to work. How does this affect their self-esteem and overall quality of life? Quality of life (QoL) is the satisfaction one feels about his current situation. Using the Comprehensive Quality of Life Scale-Adult (ComQol-A5) (Cummins, 1997), the perceived QoL of eleven pairs of matched participants(N=22) from a State School for the Deaf was measured. Data were used to analyze the impact that employment had upon their perceived QoL. The results indicated no significant differences …
Deaf And Hearing: Conducting Cross-Cultural Research In A Postsecondary Setting, Steven R. Sligar
Deaf And Hearing: Conducting Cross-Cultural Research In A Postsecondary Setting, Steven R. Sligar
JADARA
This paper describes cross-cultural research methods that were used in a case study of a community college in the Midwest. During the course of the research, the importance of applying cross-cultural research methods became apparent. Analysis of the research process resulted in a identification of three aspects of cross-cultural design. These are the cross cultural research guidelines applied to Deafness, the context of the study, and the conduct of the research. The results indicated that when the interests of people who were Deaf were considered, cross-cultural collaboration was possible, there was benefit to the Deaf culture and the mainstream, and …

Deafness is the invisible, unseen sensory anomaly that is difficult for hearing individuals to understand. Deaf and hard of hearing children look the same as other children and have the same cognitive abilities as hearing children; they ambulate, laugh, cry, and have the same basic needs. Research data supports the fact that when intelligence instruments are used that do not rely on verbal and language processing abilities the results show that there is no difference in performance between hearing and hearing impaired children (Moores 2001; Vemon 1990). There is the same range of intelligence for both groups. However there is …

The survey distributed to professional counselors revealed a number of significant findings including: 1) Deaf and hard of hearing children are experiencing varying degrees of difficulty functioning in educational programs, and b) a significant number of deaf and hard of hearing children are receiving …
