Transgender Ce For Ot Practitioners And Students, Kalie Fagins Apr 2021

Transgender Ce For Ot Practitioners And Students, Kalie Fagins

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

Introduction/Rational:

The population of individuals that identify outside of the gender binary social constructs is increasing and becoming more visible. Therefore, it is important for healthcare practitioners to be well equipped to provide affirming care for patients in the LGBTQIA+ community. Findings show that transgender patients have higher incidences of negative experiences with healthcare workers despite healthcare workers having more affirming attitudes. Other studies found healthcare practitioners lacked training and knowledge to provide the best quality of care.

Objectives:

To educate occupational therapy practitioners on gender affirming care related to daily activities, health, and well-being.

Method/approach:

Content from articles, videos, …

Yoga For Traumatic Stress: An Occupation, Morgan Farris Apr 2021

Yoga For Traumatic Stress: An Occupation, Morgan Farris

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

Physicians in the medical field are beginning to dive deeper into the effects of trauma experienced by individuals of all ages. The effects of trauma can mask itself in a plethora of undesirable or debilitating behaviors. The word, trauma, can now be heard in relation to military veterans, throughout courtrooms and in hospitals, and even in classrooms of even the youngest of populations. Trauma can result from a single distressing event, to years of abuse, neglect, or stressful events. Undoubtedly, any traumatic event can have an impact on a person’s ability to function and cope with daily life. Whether the …

Doctoral Capstone Experience With A Neurological Population, Courtney E. Groce

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

Through the completion of a doctoral capstone experience, an entry-level occupational therapy doctoral student is able to further develop advanced skills. The doctoral capstone experience is during the student’s last semester in the program and is 16 weeks long. The doctoral capstone experience consists of both a culminating project and the experience itself. The capstone project is “comprised of a literature review, needs assessment, goals/objectives, and an evaluation plan based on specific focus areas” (ACOTE, 2020). The Nova Southeastern University Entry-Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Manual states that “the goal of the doctoral capstone project and experience is …

Doctoral Capstone Experience In Advocacy And Administration - Stay In Step, Mariana Zelaya

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) focus areas chosen for my capstone project were advocacy and administration. Long-term rehabilitation programs are essential for the quality of life (QOL) of people living with long-term neurological conditions (LTNC). Unfortunately, these programs are hard to come across and are seldom covered by insurance in the United States (U.S.). Stay in Step is a spinal cord injury (SCI) and brain injury outpatient clinic offering these long-term rehabilitation services. Stay in Step is a non-profit, veteran-founded facility mainly running on grants and donations. About half of the clients are self-pay, since insurance companies …

Child trafficking has been reported in all 50 states and affects more than 2 million children each year (Guardian Group, 2021). Involvement in human trafficking at a young age induces trauma that has a lasting effect on the victim’s personality and coping skills. A review of literature confirmed a need for more support of the use of occupational therapy with sex trafficking survivors. Despite support for the implementation of occupational therapy in similar trauma populations like domestic violence, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disaster survivors, there is limited literature supporting the use of OT with human trafficking survivors (Gorman & …

Optimization Of Grow-Out Of Bouldering Coral Microfragments: Land Vs. Offshore Nursery, Ashlee A. Steinberg Apr 2021

Optimization Of Grow-Out Of Bouldering Coral Microfragments: Land Vs. Offshore Nursery, Ashlee A. Steinberg

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Corals along the Florida Reef Tract and the wider Caribbean have been declining for decades. Low densities of adult colonies hinder the ability of corals to replenish themselves through sexual reproduction, thus reef managers are focusing on restoration actions that increase coral biomass. Microfragmentation is a way to quickly increase the biomass of bouldering corals by cutting the coral into small pieces which forces the coral to allocate its resources away from reproduction and back into growth, increasing its growth rate. This study assessed the optimal location for grow-out (land vs. offshore nursery) and its synergy with size of fragment …

Dungeons & Drafting: Using Trpgs In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Anyssa J. Gonzalez Apr 2021

Dungeons & Drafting: Using Trpgs In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Anyssa J. Gonzalez

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Roleplaying games (RPGs) are powerful tools that encourage players to form and alter identities (Bowman, 2010; Gee, 2003; Johnson, 2012), compose texts for the gaming community (Alexander, 2009; Colby & Colby, 2008), and evaluate texts in innovative ways (Glazer, 2015; Ostenson, 2013). However, there is research missing in the way of practical applications of RPGs in first-year composition (FYC) classrooms. This thesis presents a six-week tabletop roleplaying game (TRPG) module called Under Shady Terms, which uses the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), fifth edition. My design of the TRPG takes into consideration composition scholarship on writing …

Post-Traumatic Stress Impact On Health Outcomes In Gulf War Illness, Mary G. Jeffrey, Fanny Collado, Jeffrey L. Kibler, Christian Delucia, Stephen Craig Messer, Nancy Klimas, Travis Craddock

Faculty Articles

Background: Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic, multi-symptomatic disorder affecting an estimated 25–32% of the returning military veterans of the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War. GWI presents with a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, muscle pain, cognitive problems, insomnia, rashes and gastrointestinal issues and continues to be a poorly understood illness. This heterogeneity of GWI symptom presentation complicates diagnosis as well as the identification of effective treatments. Defining subgroups of the illness may help alleviate these complications. Our aim is to determine if GWI can be divided into distinct subgroups based on PTSD symptom presentation.

Methods: Veterans diagnosed with …

Microplastic Quantification Of The Proventriculus And Gizzard Of Florida Seabirds, Jonathan J. Clark Apr 2021

Microplastic Quantification Of The Proventriculus And Gizzard Of Florida Seabirds, Jonathan J. Clark

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Plastic pollution is a global problem that exists in even the most remote locations. Plastic biodegrades slowly but breaks apart into progressively smaller pieces relatively quickly. Plastic pieces‘microplastics’ and are of interest due to their ability to associate with harmful chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Through microplastics, POPs can enter the food web and have the potential to biomagnify in higher trophic levels. Once ingested, microplastics and their associated POPs can reduce body condition, alter reproduction rates, and increase mortality. Marine birds are at a higher risk of ingesting microplastics because they feed at the ocean’s surface where …

Ddpcr Reveals Sars-Cov-2 Variants In Florida Wastewater, Eben Gering, Jacob Colbert, Sarah Schmedes, George Duncan, Jose V. Lopez, Jessy Motes, James Weiss, Taj Azarian, Omer Tekin, Jason Blanton Apr 2021

Ddpcr Reveals Sars-Cov-2 Variants In Florida Wastewater, Eben Gering, Jacob Colbert, Sarah Schmedes, George Duncan, Jose V. Lopez, Jessy Motes, James Weiss, Taj Azarian, Omer Tekin, Jason Blanton

Biology Faculty Articles

Wastewater was screened for the presence of functionally significant mutations in SARS-CoV-2 associated with emerging variants of concern (VOC) by ddPCR, and results accorded with sequencing of clinical samples from the same region. We propose that PCR-based screening of wastewater can provide a powerful tool for rapid and inexpensive screening of large population segments for VOC-associated mutations and can hone complementary sampling and sequencing of direct (human) test material to track emerging VOC.

Perceived Stigma Among Family Members Of Persons Suffering From Mental Illness: A Narrative Exploration From West Bengal, India, Bidisha Banerjee, Shikha Dixit Apr 2021

Perceived Stigma Among Family Members Of Persons Suffering From Mental Illness: A Narrative Exploration From West Bengal, India, Bidisha Banerjee, Shikha Dixit

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, we report the findings of a qualitative study that, aims to understand the family members’ subjective experiences with perceived stigma of mental illness. The theoretical standpoint and the research method for the study employed are social constructivist theory and narrative inquiry respectively. We conducted semi-structured and in-depth interviews with family members and others accompanying patients to an outpatient unit of a psychiatric clinic. The professionals and the administrative staff at the clinic gave additional interviews. The constant comparative method was employed for the analysis of the narratives. The findings suggest the existence of perceived and direct stigma …

Youtube For Transcribing And Google Drive For Collaborative Coding: Cost-Effective Tools For Collecting And Analyzing Interview Data, Tim Hopper, Hong Fu, Kathy Sanford, Thiago Hinkel

The Qualitative Report

Cloud-based tools are increasingly used in research processes. In this paper, we illustrate the practice of one research team making use of multiple cloud-based applications in preparing, analyzing, and sharing research data, as well as in collaborative writing and display of results. Important research ethics considerations are also explored as a foundation for this practice. We believe that our detailed description of the steps involved can be of help to researchers, particularly novice researchers who may lack research funds to have qualitative interviews transcribed. This mashed-up use of free cloud-based software makes data preparation from qualitative interviews cost-effective, more efficient, …

Remembering Postpartum Depression In Later Life: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Walker Ladd Phd Apr 2021

Remembering Postpartum Depression In Later Life: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Walker Ladd Phd

The Qualitative Report

Postpartum depression (PPD) occurs in as many as 1 in 7 women (Gavin et al., 2005). PPD remains underdiagnosed and largely untreated, contributing to high societal costs and increased maternal mortality. Despite the wealth of research reporting the adverse effects of PPD on childbearing women and their offspring, little is known about how women who have experienced PPD describe or interpret the meaning of the experience in later life. I conducted semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 10 women self-identifying as having had PPD a minimum of 13 years in the past. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) I identified …

Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis: A Framework For Analysing Visual And Textual Data, Nicole Brown, Jo Collins Apr 2021

Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis: A Framework For Analysing Visual And Textual Data, Nicole Brown, Jo Collins

The Qualitative Report

As qualitative research has evolved, researchers now often combine interviews with the production of photographs, artefacts, collages, maps or drawings and the like. However, in practice, the artefacts produced are used to eliciting experiences and stimulating conversations rather than as data, per se, which is often due to the lack of guidelines for how to deal with the artefacts as data in a systematic analytical process. In this article, we present the Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis, a framework developed to provide much-needed support for qualitative researchers in analysing artefacts in combination with interviews. Drawing on existing frameworks for visual and textual …
